Pedro Pascal The Last of Us

At one time, the first season of the HBO series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us was meant to consist of ten episodes, with Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole) directing the first three. For reasons that have never been fully revealed, Balagov only ended up directing the first episode, with series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (who also wrote and directed the video game source material) taking over as directors on episode two and three, respectively. Then the first and second episodes were combined in post, with Balagov going uncredited for the scenes he directed, and the Druckmann-helmed third episode became the second episode. The Last of Us season 2 is now in production, and industry scooper Daniel Richtman has heard that Druckmann will be directing the sixth episode of the season.

Richtman also heard that “two LATINX brothers, 16 and 13” will have major roles in The Last of Us season 2, episode 6.

While The Last of Us season 1 ended up having nine episodes, it was recently confirmed that The Last of Us season 2 will be coming in a little shorter, with seven episodes.

The story of the The Last of Us video game is set years after a fungal plague wiped out much of humanity, transforming most into vicious zombie-like monsters, the story follows Joel, who’s living in a militarized quarantine zone. He has a close relationship with Tess, who operates in the black market of this community. Together, they’ve become known by the local criminal underworld for their ruthlessness. On a mission to reclaim their stolen guns, they run into the leader of the Fireflies, a resistance group, who tasks them with smuggling a young girl named Ellie out of the zone. This mission soon becomes much more than they were prepared for.

For the HBO series, Pedro Pascal plays Joel, who is “tormented by past trauma and failure. He must trek across a pandemic-ravaged America, all the while protecting a girl who represents the last hope of humanity”. He is joined in the cast by Bella Ramsey as Ellie, “an orphan who has never known anything but a ravaged planet and who struggles to balance her instinct for anger and defiance with her need for connection and belonging… as well as the newfound reality that she may be the key to saving the world”; Anna Torv as Tess, “a smuggler and hardened survivor in a post-pandemic world”; Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy, “a former soldier who hasn’t lost his sense of idealism and hope for a better world”; Merle Dandridge as Marlene, “the head of the Fireflies, a resistance movement struggling for freedom against an oppressive military regime”; Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah; Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, “a rebel in a quarantine zone”; Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as Bill and Frank, “two post-pandemic survivalists living alone in their own isolated town”; and Storm Reid as Ellie’s best friend Riley.

Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who did the motion-capture performances for Joel and Ellie in the video game, are also in the cast of the show. Baker plays James, “a senior member of a group of settlers who must fight to keep their community alive in the face of increasingly brutal odds.” Baker also hosts a podcast that serves as a companion to the TV series. Johnson’s character is Anna, “a pregnant woman, alone and on the run, who must give birth under the most terrifying of circumstances.”

New season 2 cast members include Isabela Merced (Madame Web) as Dina, a romantic love interest for the Ellie character; Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart and No One Will Save You) as Abby Anderson, a major character from the video game who is described as being “a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved”; Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) as soldier named Manny, Ariela Barer (How To Blow Up a Pipeline) as young doctor Mel, Tati Gabrielle (You) as military medic Nora, Spencer Lord (Riverdale) as Owen, “a gentle soul trapped in a warrior’s body,” Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale) as Isaac, “the quietly powerful leader of a large militia group, known in the video game as the Washington Liberation Front, who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy,“ and Young Mazino of Beef as Jesse, “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost.” (Jesse also happens to be Dina’s ex.) Schitt’s Creek Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara is also in there, in an unspecified role. Merced said Dever is “one of the most talented actors I’ve ever worked with.”

Jennifer Carpenter, 1923, Yellowstone

Deadline reports that Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) has joined the cast of 1923 for a recurring role in the upcoming second season.

Carpenter will play Mamie Fossett in the Yellowstone prequel series. She is a “highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.” Deadline states that production on the second season of 1923 will begin later this summer, but SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan, who handles the European distribution of the franchise, recently said that they’re actually filming right now.

The first season of 1923 starred Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the heads of the Yellowstone ranch. The series introduced a new generation of the Dutton family and explored the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plagued the Mountain West and the Duttons who call it home. The debut of 1923 set a ratings record at Paramount+, surpassing the debuts of Taylor Sheridan’s other series, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King, as well as 1883. You can check out a review of 1923 from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

As for the main Yellowstone series, production on the final season kicked off last month, with the story expected to come to an epic conclusion. However, it won’t be the end of the Duttons, not by a long shot. It reported last month that Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes would be reprising their roles of Rip, Beth, and Kayce for a new modern-day Yellowstone spinoff series. There have been rumblings that Matthew McConaughey, Kurt Russell, and Michelle Pfeiffer could be joining them.

Kevin Costner, who previously starred in Yellowstone, unexpectedly exited the series last year. It feels as though we still don’t know the whole story behind his exit, but the actor has expressed an openness to return. “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner said. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.” The first episodes of Yellowstone‘s final season will drop this November.

Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Kathryn Bigelow, Netflix

Kathryn Bigelow‘s upcoming Netflix film is shaping up after the additions of Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad, Luther, The Harder They Fall) and Rebecca Fergusson (Dune: Part Two, The Greatest Showman, Mission: Impossible – Fallout) as Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent, Super 8, Hillbily Elegy) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl, Mad Men, The Crown) enter final negotiations to join the cast.

Nearly everything about this movie remains secret, from the title to the synopsis to the stars’ roles. According to Deadline, the story revolves around the White House, where a crisis erupts. While there’s not much to go on, it’s not impossible to imagine Elba, Fergusson, Basso, and Harris leading a political thriller.

It’s been a while since Bigelow shot a feature film. Her last effort was the crime drama Detroit, which starred John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Algee Smith, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever, and Jacob Latimore. The fact-based drama, focusing on the 1967 Detroit riots, follows a group of rogue police officers who respond to a complaint with retribution rather than justice.

Previously, Bigelow tried developing an adaptation of the David Koepp novel Aurora. Unfortunately, the project never came to fruition. What was it about? Here’s a synopsis for Koepp’s book courtesy of Amazon:

Aubrey Wheeler is just trying to get by in Aurora, Illinois after her semi-criminal ex-husband split, leaving behind his unruly teenage son.

Then the lights go out—not just in Aurora but across the globe. A solar storm has knocked out power almost everywhere. Suddenly, all problems are local, very local, and Aubrey must assume the mantle of fierce protector of her suburban neighborhood.

Across the country lives Aubrey’s estranged brother, Thom. A fantastically wealthy, neurotically over-prepared Silicon Valley CEO, he plans to ride out the crisis in a gilded desert bunker he built for maximum comfort and security.

But the complicated history between the siblings is far from over, and what feels like the end of the world is just the beginning of several long-overdue reckonings—which not everyone will survive.

What kind of White House crisis do you think Kathryn Bigelow’s Netflix feature confronts? Who else would you add to the star-studded cast to improve this project? Let us know in the comments section below.

Jordan Peele

Universal Pictures has released all three of filmmaker Jordan Peele’s directing efforts to date – Get OutUs, and Nope. And their working relationship is going to continue with the fourth movie Peele will be directing, a project that is, so far, only known as Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele. In early 2023, Universal announced that they would be releasing Peele’s fourth film on Wednesday, December 25, 2024… but the strikes that hit Hollywood last year threw Peele off track and the movie was removed from Universal’s release schedule. Now it’s back on there, as Deadline reports that Universal is aiming to get Peele’s fourth film into theatres on October 23, 2026. What was once meant to be a Christmas release will now be arriving just in time for Halloween!

While we wait to see Peele’s next directorial effort, he’s also producing the horror film Him, which is set to reach theatres on September 19th, 2025. Directed by Justin Tipping from a screenplay by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, that one stars Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, and Jim Jeffries, and is said to be about a rookie quarterback who goes to train with a retiring star QB who may hold a secret about how he has played so long at such a high level.

Peele is also producing a reboot of Wes Craven’s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs for Universal, and Doom Patrol and Night Sky writer Ezra Claytan Daniels was recently hired to write the screenplay for it.

Nothing is really known about this fourth Jordan Peele movie, although World of Reel shared a rumor a while back that Peele would be working with Nope cast members Steven Yeun and Daniel Kaluuya (who was also the star of Get Out) again for this movie. That rumor “could never be corroborated with strong sourcing.” So we’ll have to wait and see what it’s going to be.

Several months ago, Peele was interviewed on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, where he said, “I do feel like my next project is clear to me, and I’m psyched that I have another film that, you know, could be my favorite movie if I make it right.

Are you a Jordan Peele fan, and are you glad to hear that his fourth film is back on Universal’s release schedule? Let us know – and tell us what you think of the film’s 2026 release date – by leaving a comment below.
