Shawnee Smith Bloodline Killer

Back in 2022, it was announced that Shawnee Smith of the Saw franchise (not to mention two of my favorites, Summer School and The Blob ’88) had signed on to star in a horror movie called The Skulleton. That film has since been retitled Bloodline Killer – and today, June 28th, it has been released through the Tubi streaming service as a Tubi Original! A trailer for the film can be seen at THIS LINK… and if you’re intrigued by what you see, you can head over to Tubi and watch the movie for free.

Smith is joined in the cast of Bloodline Killer by Tyrese Gibson (Morbius), Bruce Dern (The Hateful Eight), Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black), Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey at Night), Drew Moerlein (South of Hell), Alexander James Rodriguez (Bee and Puppycat), Jaime Zevallos (Cloak and Dagger), James Gaudioso (Mid-Century), and Anthony Gaudioso (What Josiah Saw).

Ante Novakovic (Sanctioning Evil) directed the film from a screenplay by Anthony and James Gaudioso (Mid-Century). The story centers on Smith’s character, Moira Cole, who attempts to move on with her shattered life after the brutal murder of her friends and family at the hands of her deranged and obsessed cousin, Lee Morris. Living a quiet suburban life with her deeply affected two adult sons, Moira is constantly reminded of her past, which is strewn across the screen every October, having been optioned into a popular movie franchise.

The Gaudiosos produced Bloodline Killer with Rob Simmons of Jars Media Group and DJ Doddof Future Proof Films. Drew Morlein, Peter D’Amato, and Twelve 83 Entertainment’s Laura Barbato serve as executive producers.

I was interested in this one as soon as it was announced, sold on the idea of seeing Shawnee Smith in a slasher movie, even though I didn’t like the title The Skulleton very much. I’m not blown away by Bloodline Killer, either, but I guess it’s a step up. Whatever the movie’s called, I’ll be watching it now that it’s on Tubi.

In a Violent Nature

Writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher movie In a Violent Nature had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read a review by Chris Bumbray right HERE), and IFC gave the film a theatrical release at the end of May (which is when Tyler Nichols wrote his review and interviewed the director and stars). The movie will be reaching the Shudder streaming service sometime later this year – but in the meantime, it has already received a digital release and is available to watch in the comfort of your home right now! You can check it out on Amazon at THIS LINK, where it can be rented for the price of $6.99 or purchased for $14.99.

Here’s the official synopsis: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.

In a Violent Nature stars Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, and Lauren Taylor. It was produced by Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer.

While In a Violent Nature‘s Shudder premiere date still hasn’t been announced, Shudder’s Samuel Zimmerman previously told Variety, “Chris had such a clarity of vision with what this film is. It takes elements of very classical slashers and the very classical slasher aesthetic, but I understood the language he wanted to tell it in. At the time he was talking about films like Gerald Kargl’s Angst, which is one of my favorite home invasion films from Austria from the early ’80s. It has really revolutionary cinematography, so I knew he wanted to make this artful slasher that didn’t reject the hallmarks, but evolved the language of it forward and gave you a different perspective by tying you to the monster himself.

Will you be watching In a Violent Nature now that it has received a digital release? Let us know by leaving a comment below – and if you caught the movie during its theatrical run, let us know what you thought of it.

Clawfoot Francesca Eastwood

The children of two Hollywood icons are set to collide in the darkly comic psycho thriller Clawfoot, which is coming to us from director Michael Day, screenwriter April Wolfe, and Yale Entertainment, the company behind the awesome Becky. Francesca Eastwood (Awake), a daughter of Clint Eastwood, and Milo Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), a son of Mel Gibson, star in the film, which we first heard about at the end of September in 2022. If you’ve been wondering what happened with Clawfoot, we have a positive update to share today: Deadline reports that Vertical has acquired the U.S. distribution rights and are planning to release the film on July 19th!

Clawfoot sees Francesca Eastwood taking on the role of an upper-class suburban housewife who is psychologically terrorized by a manipulative contractor (Milo Gibson) remodeling her bathroom… until she partners with her BFF to turn the tables and a twisted battle of wits ensues with deliciously unexpected results.

Olivia Culpo (I Feel Pretty) plays the BFF.

Clawfoot marks the feature directorial debut of Michael Day, who previously directed multiple short films and episodes of the shows The News Tank and Sisters. This is the second feature written by April Wolfe, as she previously co-wrote the poorly received 2019 version of Black Christmas.

Day produced Clawfoot with Jordan Beckerman and Jordan Yale Levine of Yale Entertainment. Lee Broda, Colby Cote, Nicholas Donnermeyer, Jason Kringstein, Scott Levenson, Kade Thomas, Jim Thomas, Teresa Thomas, Jeffrey Tussi, David Nazar, Patrick Heaphy, and Will Hirschfeld serve as executive producers.

Beckerman and Levine provided the following statement: “We’re thrilled to be working with the Vertical team again—our third film with them in the past year. April Wolfe’s script is so clever and we knew immediately we had to make it. Mike [Day] is someone we had worked with and is super-talented, but we were totally blown away with what he accomplished in his debut film. It’s a wild ride with some really great surprises!

Does Clawfoot sound like a movie you’d want to check out this July? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

kaos, jeff goldblum

Netflix has revealed a new look at the upcoming comedy KAOS. The new series is set to stream on the platform on August 29. From The End of the F*****g World creator, Charlie Covell, KAOS is an irreverent dramedy, inspired by Greek mythology (no degree in classics required!). A dysfunctional family (of gods) – cruel fathers, wayward sons, discontented wives and warring brothers –  the series takes a fresh look at power structures and the idea of the 1%.

Jeff Goldblum plays Zeus: king of the Gods, ruler of the world. He’s cruel, stylish and all-powerful. That is, until he’s not. From BAFTA winning screenwriter and showrunner Charlie Covell (The End Of The F***ing World), KAOS is a bold, darkly comic, contemporary take on Greek mythology: exploring love, power, and life in the underworld. The Queen by his side will be Janet Mcteer as Hera, with Nabhaan Rizwaan as their wayward son, Dionysus. On Earth, Aurora Perrineau (Riddy) and Killian Scott (Orpheus) take on the roles of disillusioned wife and distracted rock-star husband respectively.

Having long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods, Zeus’ reign has never been truly threatened.  That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Believing it to be the harbinger of an ancient prophecy which foretells his destruction, neurosis sets in: Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming. As his paranoia takes hold, the God of Gods – seeing signs everywhere – starts to dangerously self-destruct.

And he’s right to be worried. Zeus’ one time friend and now prisoner, Prometheus, is orchestrating a plan to bring him down. The plan involves three disparate humans, all of whom are totally unaware of their cosmic significance or the part they must play in saving the world. No pressure. (Some pressure).

Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) is King of the gods: all-powerful yet desperately insecure. A megalomaniac in leisure wear, Zeus’s paranoia is ignited one day when he finds a new wrinkle on his forehead. He becomes convinced that it is evidence of an ancient prophecy coming to pass: that he and the family of gods are going to fall from power. As he attempts to shore up his regime, Zeus makes dangerous enemies all over the place, fails to listen to those who are actually trying to help him and takes actions which threaten the survival of humanity itself.

Hera (Janet McTeer) is queen of the gods, and married to Zeus (who also happens to be her brother). Life is pretty good for Hera when we meet her, but it becomes increasingly strained by her husband’s increasing paranoia and obsession with his prophecy. As Zeus becomes more deranged in his actions, Hera is placed in real jeopardy. For she has an explosive secret that could threaten her very existence if Zeus were to discover it. Perhaps the best thing for Hera would be to strike out on her own…

Dionysus (Nabhaan Rizwan) is Zeus’s favourite son. His mother was mortal, and Hera turned her into a bee (don’t ask) Zeus made Dionysus a full god — the keeper of Pleasure, Madness and Wild Frenzy. Up until this point all has been good but, recently, Dionysus has found himself a little… bored. He wants more: more power, and more respect from his family. He’s fed up of being treated like a child. A moment of casual cruelty from Zeus pushes Dionysus into actions which are aimed to annoy his father, but end up threatening to rupture the entire world.

Meanwhile, the humans continue to live a frustrated existence under the rule of the Gods. Riddy (Aurora Perrineau) has no idea of her cosmic significance. She barely feels significant in her own life. The wife of Orpheus, world-famous musician, her days are ones of easy luxury: from the outside, her existence is enviable. But Riddy is deeply unhappy, and knows she needs to make a change. And as fate would have it, a chance encounter one morning at a supermarket offers just that. Her husband, Orpheus (Killian Scott) is a rockstar with a big heart and an ego to match. When his life is ripped out from underneath him, Orpheus has a choice: to accept the cards he has been dealt, or attempt to defy death itself.
