IF, blu-ray

Paramount has now released details for the home releases of John Krasinski’s family film about imaginary friends. The movie had an underwhelming response from audience ticket sales as it was one of the unfortunate flops of the summer. Our own Chris Bumbray mentioned in his review, “In the end, IF is nowhere near as bad as some of its detractors will say it is (people are already calling it the worst movie of the year), but it’s not that great, either. It’s an interesting misfire from a director who clearly has some major chops and a huge career ahead of him.”

Now, you’ll be able to judge for yourself as the Ryan Reynolds starrer comes home to open up your imagination. The press release reads, “Experience writer/director John Krasinski’s “heartwarming” (Joey Paur, GeekTyrant) and “hilarious” (Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky) original adventure IF when it arrives to buy or rent on Digital June 18, 2024 from Paramount Home Entertainment.  The film will debut on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, and DVD on August 13.

The perfect movie to enjoy with the whole family, IF received an A CinemaScore and 88% Fresh Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes®.   The film stars Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski, and Fiona Shaw along with a cavalcade of top-tier voice talent, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell, who bring a delightful array of imaginary friends to life.”

Fans who purchase the film on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, or Blu-ray will have access to over 40 minutes of behind-the-scenes bonus content to explore the whimsical world of imaginary friends.  See how each IF came to life, hear how filmmakers made the imaginary feel real, go on location in New York from Brooklyn Heights to Coney Island, and don’t miss the hysterical gag reel!

Snipes Blade

Marvel’s Blade reboot is far from looking sharp, with a rotation of writers and directors that indicate this is a seriously troubled production. We’ve heard industry insiders and readers’ takes on it but now we have the OG Blade himself, Wesley Snipes, chiming in on all of the shifting personnel, suggesting they’re ice skating uphill.

Wesley Snipes took to X following the news of director Yann Demange’s departure from directing Blade, writing, “Blade, lordylordylordy…folks still lookin for the secret sauce, ridin snowmobiles in traffic, kinda rough. Daywalkers make it look easy, don’t they?”

This slight dig isn’t just welcome – we all wanted to hear Wesley Snipes’ take on the behind-the-scenes problems on Blade – but also reminds us of just how awesome he was as Blade in the original movies. Many do anticipate seeing what two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali can bring to the character but Snipes will, for most of us, always be the one and only Blade.

Even still, Wesley Snipes has no issues with someone else giving Blade a go, previously saying, “I’m cool with it. I don’t walk around as Blade, so I’m not attached to the character like that, you know? I feel no emotional loss. Zero. I’m happy that he’s been cast, and more than likely he’ll do a great job.”

As of now, Marvel’s Blade reboot – which will be part of Phase Six of the MCU – is slated for a November 7th, 2025 release. But the production is going to have to get it together if they’re going to have cameras rolling this fall as intended. Writers both in and out of the project at various stages include Nic Pizzolatto, Michael Green, Michael Starrbury, Erci Pearson, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, and Beau DeMayo. As for directors, first came Mogul Mowgli’s Bassam Tariq, who left back in September 2022, making room for White Boy Rick’s Yann Demange to take over. But just this month, Demange backed away as well. It has yet to be announced who will serve as the latest – and hopefully permanent – director.

What do you expect from the Blade reboot? Will Marvel successfully recover from the delays and crew changes?

It Follows

Last October, it was announced that writer/director David Robert Mitchell and actress Maika Monroe are reteaming for a sequel to horror film It Follows, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival ten years ago. The sequel is being called They Follow – and in an interview with Collider, Monroe promised that this sequel will be “bigger, darker, and more f*cked up” than its predecessor.

Monroe will be reprising the role of heroine Jay Height in They Follow. She told Collider that Mitchell “wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it . He’s very specific, turns down so many… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, “Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?” And I read it, and it’s just so f*cking good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more f*cked up . Reading it was the craziest thing ever. I am so excited for this role. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited to delve into something. There’s a lot there to play with, and I think it’s going to be incredibly challenging, for sure, but so fulfilling. Working with David, I can’t wait.

Details on the plot of They Follow are being kept under wraps, but the plan is that filming will take place by the end of 2024. NEON will be co-producing the film with Good Fear Content. Mitchell is producing with Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, as well as the original producers of It Follows, David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

It Follows had the following synopsis: After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.

Are you looking forward to seeing how much bigger and darker They Follow will be than It Follows? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

While we wait for They Follow to go into production, Mitchell has been working on a mysterious project called Flowervale Street for Warner Bros. Pictures, Jackson Pictures, and J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery star in that film, which is set to reach theatres on May 16, 2025 and is said to be “a family adventure set in the 1980s that involves dinosaurs.”

3 body problem, zhang yimou

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is continuing to tell the story of its first season through some “additional episodes” that the streamer has ordered, which will seemingly segue into new seasons as the show has been renewed for two more. The 3 Body Problem was the title of the first novel in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The second novel was titled The Dark Forest and the third was Death’s End. The first season of 3 Body Problem did pull in a sizeable audience, but the show wasn’t exactly the massive hit Netflix was hoping it would be, especially when you factor in the price tag of over $20 million per episode.

The property will now also be getting a feature film treatment as Deadline has revealed that renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou, known for the Jet Li film Hero and the Matt Damon historical creature film The Great Wall, will be behind the camera for the Three-Body Problem movie. According to Deadline, “The announcement was made by Wang Changtian, CEO of China’s Enlight Media, during the opening forum of the Shanghai International Film Festival this past weekend. He said the project is currently in the post-production stage. Footage of the announcement has been shared widely across social media sites.”

As for the Netflix show, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have previously said that they envisioned a multi-season arc for the series, which could span between three or four seasons. “Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy,” Woo told GamesRader earlier this year. “The novels get longer and longer so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three. We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four, you know, or some other number. The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons but beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly.“

The first eight episodes of the Netflix adaptation had the following synopsis: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history. The series stars Eiza González (Baby Driver, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Jovan Adepo (OverlordThe Stand), Benedict Wong (Doctor StrangeGemini Man), John Bradley (Game of ThronesMoonfall), Tsai Chin (Lucky Grandma, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Liam Cunningham (Game of ThronesDog Soldiers), Jess Hong (Inked, The Brokenwood Mysteries), Marlo Kelly (Home and Away, Dare Me), Alex Sharp (How to Talk to Girls at Parties, The Trial of the Chicago 7), Sea Shimooka (Pink Skies Ahead, Arrow), Saamer Usmani (Inventing Anna, Succession), and newcomer Zine Tseng.

Armie Hammer

Perhaps no other celebrity has had a stranger fall in recent memory than Armie Hammer. Hey, when cannibalism is in the headlines, that’s going to catch an eye. When multiple women began coming forward with abuse allegations in 2021, that was pretty much it for the actor despite not being formally charged. Topped with a claim that he had a desire to gnaw on human flesh and that’s not necessarily a dude you want to work with, lest you end up on the craft service table. But Hammer continues to deny such claims, although he does say such talk ultimately helped him change.

Speaking on the Painful Lessons podcast (via Deadline), Armie Hammer stated,“People called me a cannibal. Like I ate people! What???? You know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to eat people!” He added, “It was an ego death, a career death. A neutron bomb went off in my life. It killed off [everything].”

But Armie Hammer has plans to move forward, having found duel in all of the allegations, the force of which he once said made him consider suicide. “Whatever it was that people said, whatever it was that happened, I’m now at a place in my life where I’m grateful for every single bit of it…I’m actually now at a place where I’m really grateful for it because where I was in my life before all of that stuff happened to me I didn’t feel good I never felt satisfied I never had enough I never was in a place where I was happy with myself where I had self-esteem. I never knew how to give myself love. I never knew how to give myself self-validation but I had this job where I was able to get it from so many people that I never had to learn how to give it to myself.”

Armie Hammer’s most recent movie was 2022’s Death on the Nile, which had finished filming before the abuse allegations came out. But Hammer admits he knows his career in Hollywood may never recover and so is working on a screenplay within what he calls his “own sandbox.”

Do you see Armie Hammer ever recovering from the allegations or is he permanently out of the business in a meaningful way? Give us your thoughts below.

What Do We Know About the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s hit video game adaptation Fallout? More than you may think. A hit from the moment it premiered, Jonathan Nolan helped shepherd the fan favorite game franchise from consoles and PCs to televisions by creating a wholly original story alongside showrunners and creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Let’s dive in and take a look at what is coming up next in the world of Fallout.

Who is joining the cast?

No announcements have been made as to who will be joining season two, but based on the announcement graphic, we can be certain that Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten will be back as Lucy MacLean, The Ghoul, and Maximus. It also seems certain that Kyle MacLachlan will be back as Hank MacLean based on where the final left things. Moises Arias and Frances Turner seem like locks to reprise their roles as Norm and Barb respectively. Sarita Choudhury could return as Moldaver despite the final episode twists, especially in the form of flashbacks as the backstory for Lucy and Cooper Howard continue to evolve. There could also be a role for Aaron Paul who previously worked with Jonathan Nolan on Westworld and has been vocal about wanting to join the series.

Who is directing?

The exact team of helmers remains to be seen, but it seems like a certainty that Jonathan Nolan will direct at least a couple of episodes. Nolan directed the first three episodes of the first season with the other five helmed by Clare Kilner, Frederick E.O. Toye, Daniel Gray Longino, and Wayne Yip. The shift in production from Namibia to California could open up more potential filmmakers to join the crew, but nothing is set in stone yet.

What is it about?

With nothing official revealed, we can assume that season two will address the shocking revelations at the end of the first season. Hank MacLean was unmasked as a member of Vault-Tec from over two hundred years earlier and after a showdown with Lucy, he made his way to the outskirts of New Vegas, an iconic setting from the video games. The finale also separated Lucy and Maximus. Maximus, now seen as the “Sword” of the Brotherhood tried to get Lucy to join him, but she opted to go with The Ghoul to find out who is “behind the wheel” of what is going on in their world.

We will see Deathclaws.

After a tease in season one of a familiar looking skull, series co-creator Graham Wagner has said they wanted to do justice to the recognizable monsters from the games after spending the first season doing some major world-building.

Lucy will be very different.

Ella Purnell has teased that the end of the first season brought up questions as to whether Lucy is still a hero or even a good person, something the actress is keen to explore. She told GQ that “I don’t know who she’s gonna be in season two, [but] this is what happens when you break the unbreakable. I don’t know who she’s about to become.”

When will we see it?

With the first season having debuted earlier this year, there is likely a significant wait before we see the second batch of episodes. Amazon snagged the rights to Fallout back in 2020 and it took nearly four years from inception to premiere. Odds are that it won’t take nearly that long for the second season to begin production once the scripts are ready. The California tax credit for season two was announced in early April which means production could begin towards the end of the year. With the amount of special effects needed in post-production, it seems unlikely we will see Fallout back on Prime Video until late 2025 or maybe even early 2026.

Stay tuned to JoBlo.com as we learn more about the upcoming second season of Fallout.

The Cable Guy

As Chip Douglas once said, “Free cable is the ultimate aphrodisiac.” He might have a point there, and to many, The Cable Guy is the ultimate Jim Carrey movie. Widely reviled upon release – The Simpsons even made a joke about it nearly ruining Carrey’s career – it has since gone on to be one of the most beloved dark comedies of the ‘90s. Such a cult following it has that it was even part of a discussion at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

In a sitdown with star Matthew Broderick and producer Judd Apatow, the two remembered Carrey’s intensity and landing a $20 million payday, becoming the first actor to do so. On the hefty salary – which Carrey earned from his boffo 1994 (The Mask, Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber all landed in the top 20 for the year) – Broderick said, “Nice as it is to make all that, it put a lot of pressure on him in a way. It hadn’t been that long since he was relatively unknown and suddenly he’s the highest paid, you gotta be the greatest genius ever, every minute, so I was sympathetic to the pressure he must have put on himself. It’s a double-edged sword when you have that kind of success, I was sympathetic to that.”

Unfortunately for The Cable Guy, that pressure did not equate to box office bucks. While it did recoup its budget, it grossly underperformed based on Carrey’s recent hits. It, too, was met with mostly negative reviews, even going on to be nominated for Hastings’ Stinkers Bad Movie Awards for Most Painfully Unfunny Comedy (that’s year’s winner: Bio-Dome).

Still, The Cable Guy has a legion of fans nearly 30 years on and is now considered a bit brilliant (it’s not just me, right?), with Chip Douglas standing out as one of Jim Carrey’s greatest characters. Honestly, I think it’s hands-down one of the funniest movies of the decade and deserves far more credit than it’s ever gotten.

As a kid growing up in the nineties, a movie that always got a ton of play in my household was Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own. I have fond memories of seeing it in theaters as a ten-year-old in the summer of 1992 (I wanted to go see Batman Returns, but it was my sister’s turn to pick the movie), and it’s a movie I only revisit from time to time. So, I’m pretty happy to hear that my next revisit will be in glorious 4K, with Sony revealing that the movie’s coming out on 4K disc this September, with a fully loaded special edition.

For those who may not remember the film, it’s based on the real-life All-American Girls Baseball League, which sprung up during World War II, as most male players were overseas fighting the war. In the film, Geena Davis (in an iconic performance) plays Dottie Hinson, who, along with her sister Kit (Lori Petty), becomes a star player for the Rockford Peaches. Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna (in one of her better performances) play fellow players, and Tom Hanks shines as their alcoholic (but ultimately supportive) coach, who gets the iconic line, “There’s no crying in baseball!”.

The film was a smash hit in 1992, making over $100 million domestically, with it spawning two short-lived TV spin-offs, the latest being a well-reviewed version for Prime Video that many think was cancelled too early

Here are the specs for the disc, which comes out September 3rd.
