Month: June 2024

A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and with this one we’ve decided to take a look at one of the most unpopular entries in one of the horror genre’s biggest franchises. It’s the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake (watch it HERE), a.k.a. The One Without Robert Englund, and you can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

Directed by Samuel Bayer from a screenplay by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer, the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake has the following synopsis: Teenagers Nancy, Quentin, Kris, Jesse and Dean are all neighborhood friends who begin having the same dream of a horribly disfigured man who wears a tattered sweater and a glove made of knives. The man, Freddy Krueger, terrorizes them in their dreams, and the only escape is to wake up. But when one of their number dies violently, the friends realize that what happens in the dream world is real, and the only way to stay alive is to stay awake.

The film stars Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Kyra Krumins, Katie Cassidy, Julianna Damm, Thomas Dekker, Bayden Coyer, Kellan Lutz, Max Holt, Clancy Brown, and Connie Britton, with Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger.

Under Paris

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, was released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th (you can read our review HERE) – and today, a judge will be deciding whether or not a parasitism lawsuit that has been filed against the filmmakers will be enough to get the movie removed from Netflix for a while. But in its nine days of release, Under Paris has already proven to be enough of a hit that Gens and producers might start having sequel talks soon.

When asked if there’s a sequel in the pipeline, Gens told Variety, “Right now, as of today, we’re not on it but there’s a chance that we’ll be discussing it soon. If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water.” To read the full interview, where Gens talks about the fact that Under Paris skewers French society, politicians, and the Olympics, click over to the Variety link.

Under Paris has the following synopsis: Set in the Summer of 2024, the film unfolds in Paris which is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river. To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city, they have no choice but to join forces with Adil, the Seine river police commander.

Bérénice Bejo, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in the silent film The Artist, Léa Léviant of Mortel, and Nassim Lyes of Overdose star. Gens’ previous directorial credits include the films Frontier(s), Hitman, The Divide, The Crucifixion, Cold Skin, Budapest, and Mayhem!, plus episodes of the shows Mortel, Gangs of London, and Crossing Lines. Gens also directed the X is for XXL segment of the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.

Have you watched Under Paris – and if so, would you be interested in seeing a sequel that takes place in “a Paris that is entirely submerged under water”? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Trap Horror Preview

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. The film was aiming for an August 9th release date – but now Warner Bros. has updated their schedule, and in the process they decided to bump Trap up to August 2nd. We’re going to get to see this one a week earlier than expected!

Other release dates newly announced by Warner Bros. (via Deadline) are UNTITLED NL/ATOMIC MONSTER/BLUMHOUSE EVENT FILM, scheduled for April 17, 2026 (that’s the Lee Cronin movie we heard about last night); UNTITLED WB EVENT FILM, scheduled for March 26, 2027; UNTITLED WPBA/LOCKSMITH FILM, scheduled for July 23, 2027; and UNTITLED WB FAMILY SEQUEL, scheduled for December 17, 2027. That line-up is quite a treat for those who like mysterious, untitled projects.

As JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray described the Trap trailer after seeing it at CinemaCon, “Saleka plays a Taylor Swift-style pop star known as Lady Raven, with Josh Harnett’s character attending alongside his daughter. He quickly discovers that the concert is a trap designed to lure a serial killer known as The Butcher, but it turns out that Harnett is the serial killer!” We had previously heard (via FilmUpdates) that Saleka – who is an R&B singer/songwriter – plays “a popstar whose concert is at the heart of the story.” Hartnett’s character is “a father who takes his child to a concert, and unwittingly gets caught up in the surrounding events.” Saleka has recorded songs for her father’s previous projects Old and Servant, but this marks her acting debut.

Hartnett has said that Trap is “very bizarre, very dark, and wild.”

Since Shyamalan produces and finances his own movies, he was able to get a SAG interim agreement for Trap (which filmed under the codename Good Grades) that allowed the project to go into production before the Screen Actors Guild strike wrapped up. His daughter Ishana was also able to get a SAG Interim deal for her feature directorial debut, the gothic fairy tale The Watchers. That film was set up at Warner Bros. as well, and was released last Friday.

Here’s what Shyamalan had to say about Trap in an interview he did with NME a while back: “I have a new idea that I’ve started writing. It’s out in 2024 and it’s very, very exciting. It’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do [recently], but I’m feeling very excited about the story, so much so that I can’t wait to tell it to you guys. I love that feeling, that electricity of ‘wow, I can’t wait for you to see it’. I will say this, the angle into the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before but the angle is very, very unique – the point of view.

Are you looking forward to seeing Trap on the big screen, and you glad to hear it’s being released a week earlier than previously scheduled? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

creature commandos

The Annecy Animation Festival has showcased a lot of upcoming projects from Warner Bros. Firstly, the studio would debut 20 minutes of footage from the new animated feature film from the realm of Middle-Earth with Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim. Warners would also announce projects coming from their DC Comics division. A trailer was shown for a two-part, R-rated, animated feature film version of the Watchmen graphic novel by Alan Moore. Now, James Gunn would send a video message for a presentation on sharing his vision for the first project from DC Studios — Creature Commandos.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Gunn sent in a video due to being in production with Superman in Atlanta. Creature Commandos is about a ragtag group of monsters that are led by Amanda Waller (voiced by Viola Davis) and is set to release on Max in December. Gunn explained to the crowd at Annecy, “It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’ve been entrusted to carry at DC Studios and plays an integral role in the vision for our future storytelling. Since taking the reins, our true north has been to bring DC film, TV, animation and gaming into alignment under a single banner and bring a sense of unity and consistency into the DCU as a whole. This frees us to create a range of products that are diverse and compelling, and deliver great stand-alone entertainment experiences on every medium, while also being part of a larger story that we’re telling within our unified DCU.”

Gunn expounded that the different mediums would keep universe consistency, “What this means in practical terms is that our characters can move in and out of animation or jump into a game or onto the big screen, but they will remain consistent throughout — same character, same history, same actor.” Davis had already played Waller in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker projects. “The new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions. Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

What differentiates Creature Commandos from The Suicide Squad? Gunn says the core group of characters “are actual literal monsters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the absolute joys of my life.”

The Office spinoff, Steve Carell, Domhnall Gleeson

A follow-up to The Office was officially given a series order by Peacock last month, and while Steve Carell won’t be reprising his role as Michael Scott, he did have some advice for new star Domhnall Gleeson.

Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson starred together in FX’s limited series The Patient, so when Gleeson was trying to decide whether he should take The Office gig, he reached out to Carell. “I know Domhnall Gleeson – who I did ‘The Patient’ with – is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure,” Carell told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something… Did you enjoy it?’ I said, ‘Of course.’

The official logline for The Office follow-up reads: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” The untitled follow-up comes from Greg Daniels (The Office) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You) and will star Domhnall Gleeson (Ex-Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus). Further members of the ensemble cast will be announced soon as production is expected to kick off next month.

It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal Entertainment. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.

In an interview last month, Carell said that while he won’t be appearing in The Office follow-up, he will be watching. “I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that,” he said. “But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company.

Lee Cronin, new movie, Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is set to write and direct a new movie for Atomic Monster, Blumhouse, and New Line, marking the first collaboration between the merged companies and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

The new Lee Cronin movie has already been given a release date of April 17, 2026, but unfortunately, that’s about all we know at this time as the plot is being kept under wraps. The film is naturally expected to be in the horror genre.

I am super excited to be gathering up my gang of oddballs from Doppelgängers to join forces with the overlords of horror at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster,” Cronin said in a statement. “Collaborating with Jason, James and the wonderful teams from these two storied and massively successful organizations is what perfect nightmares are made of. Getting to return to New Line Cinema and my wonderful partners over there is the cherry on top. I’ve got something wickedly entertaining and terrifying hidden up my sleeve, and I can’t wait to bring it screaming to the big screen on April 17th, 2026.

James Wan, Atomic Monster CEO and founder, said, “Lee is a gifted filmmaker in the world of horror whose storytelling has electrified audiences. We’re excited to collaborate with him on this project, and to bring viewers on a wildly entertaining ride.” Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum added, “Lee’s work is always fresh and surprising and he has an intriguing, modern take on something quite ancient that I think audiences will love. This also marks an exciting series of firsts for us: Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s first time working with Lee and our first joint project for Warner Bros. We can’t wait to get started.

As far as Evil Dead goes, there are actually two new movies in development. It was announced earlier this year that Sébastien Vaniček (Vermin) had been tapped to direct the next installment of the franchise, but just two months later, it was revealed that Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop In Yuma County) would be writing and directing his own Evil Dead movie. Both movies will be moving forward, but it remains to be seen which will be released first.
