Carl Weathers golf

When golfers make it to the green at the Directors Guild Foundation’s tournament later this month, all they have to remember is the words of the late Chubbs: “Just tap it in.” That will no doubt be a mantra that entire day, as the DGF has named their annual golf tournament fundraiser after the late Carl Weathers, a fitting tribute to the actor who passed away in February.

The honor is no doubt an earned one, as Carl Weathers not only served as a key member of the DGF but played a rather beloved character in one of the quintessential golf movies. We all remember that Chubbs was poised to be the next Arnold Palmer, but his pro career was cut short when an alligator bit his hand off after he tried retrieving his ball from a lake. The alligator may have gotten Chubbs’ hand but he got that bastard’s eye in the fight. Chubbs would then go on to mentor Happy Gilmore in his quest to save his grandmother’s home.

In a statement, DGF director and chairman Todd Holland stated, “Carl Weathers was the embodiment of dedication to the Directors Guild and the Foundation. For over two decades, he devoted himself to serving the DGA, including as an officer of the Foundation since 2012. Relishing the opportunity to give back, connect with peers, and enjoy quality time with friends and colleagues on the green, Carl Weathers eagerly anticipated the Directors Guild Foundation’s annual golf tournament, as both a participant and MC of the Tournament reception.” He added, “His unwavering commitment to the DGF’s vital mission and to supporting events like the Golf Tournament was truly inspiring. Carl’s passion and support have left an indelible mark that will be remembered for years to come. By renaming our annual Golf Tournament to honor him, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of this remarkable man that has enriched our community. Carl’s enduring legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of the DGF’s endeavors.”

Sadly, Chubbs won’t have such a prominent role in the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2, but no doubt Adam Sandler will pay tribute to the character, who remains such a pivotal one in not only the success of the short-tempered Happy, but the movie’s own legacy.

The Directors Guild Foundation Carl Weathers Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on June 24th.

Blade, Yann Demange

According to The Wrap, Yann Demange is no longer directing Blade for Marvel Studios. The report states that the director actually departed the project “a while ago and it was entirely amicable.” He’s the second director to exit Marvel’s Blade movie, as he was tapped to replace original director Bassam Tariq two years ago.

It’s been five years since the project was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s been troubled ever since. In addition to the two directors, Blade has also been through its share of writers. Watchmen‘s Stacy Osei-Kuffour wrote the initial script, which was later rewritten by Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), and Michael Green (Logan). The Wrap states that Eric Pearson (Fantastic Four) is currently working on the new script.

Mahershala Ali is still attached to star in Blade, and he provided what was thought to be an optimistic update last December. “We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you,” Ali said. “I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon.” As frustrating as these delays have been, an insider with knowledge of the situation told The Wrap that Marvel really wants to get Blade right, which is more important than sticking to a release schedule.

Demange had previously teased that the film would be rated R. “They gave me the R, which is so important. … We are going to have fun, because Mahershala is such a deep actor,” Demange said. “I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.” It’s unclear if this will still be the case with the new creative team, but Blade is still slated for a November 7, 2025 release. Any bets on when that will change?

Now that Yann Demange is out, who would you like to see direct Blade?

Powell Twisters

Hype for this summer’s Twisters may not exactly be hitting at record speeds, but we can probably expect some dumb action – and sometimes that’s just what you want in a summer movie. But before you write this sequel off, Twisters star Glen Powell wants you to know that it has one of the most incredible action sequences ever captured.

The core Twisters cast – Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Brandon Perea – recently sat down with Fandango ahead of its July 19th release, with Powell building a storm of excitement for one key scene. “There’s a sequence in the movie that I think is going to be one of the most incredible action sequences of all time. It all happens in a oner and I think that we shot that in December with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire.” While the action shown in the trailers does have a bit of a corny look to it, that this scene is done in a one shot – and Powell went through some physically daunting moments – does indeed sound thrilling.

Adding to this, Glen Powell noted that working on Twisters was one of the biggest challenges of his career so far – and this is coming from a dude who had to seriously step it up working with Tom Cruise. “This was maybe the most physical thing that I’ve ever done where you’re truly like, you’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado, but you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff so you’re watching real stunt men getting sucked up into the sky and you’re watching trucks move across and you’re jumping into a pool and you’re getting dragged and it’s like it’s a fully physical experience.”

Glen Powell is having one hell of a run, hitting a stride with Top Gun: Maverick that he’s hoping to keep going. We’ll have to wait and see just how Twisters does at the box office – some have argued it might have fared better on streaming – but either way, Powell is being positioned as one of Hollywood’s It Guys, which is pretty good considering the number of franchises he has turned down.

Are you going to check out Twisters when it opens next month? What do you want to see Glen Powell tackle next?

Ten Thousand Ships, Game of Thrones spinoff, new writer

Since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO has been keen to keep the franchise alive with a variety of spinoff series, but not all of them will make it to the finish line. It was reported earlier this year that Ten Thousand Ships, a spinoff chronicling the journey of Princess Nymeria leading Rhoynar refugees to Dorne, had been shelved. However, George R.R. Martin says that the project is now back on with a new writer.

Martin wrote on his blog that Eboni Booth, who won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize last month for her play Primary Truth, is working on a new pilot script for Ten Thousand Ships. “She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar,” Martin wrote. “We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.

Ten Thousand Ships is set 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of warrior queen Princess Nymeria and the surviving Rhoynars who travel from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by Valyrian and their dragons.

Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) was previously tapped to write the script for the series and has explained why he believed the studio passed on his version. “It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland explained. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia.

Helgeland continued: “Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria. Her country gets ruined and her people are forced to live on the water, which is why the show was called ‘Ten Thousand Ships.’ They end up having to leave and find a new home like the Israelites leaving Egypt. She’s leading all these people, trying to hold everyone together but things are always in danger of falling apart as they travel around a fictionalized version of the Mediterranean, looking for a new home to settle in.

As for the other Game of Thrones spinoffs, the second season of House of the Dragon is set to premiere on June 16th, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to launch in late 2025.

Possession, remake, Robert Pattinson

THR reports that Robert Pattinson is teaming up with Smile director Parker Finn for a remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession.

The original 1981 film stars Sam Neill as an international spy who returns home to find that his wife (Isabelle Adjani) wants a divorce. Throw in infidelity, murder, abuse, and a bizarre tentacle creature, and you’ve got the makings of one hell of a movie. Possession is not to everyone’s taste and critics didn’t know what to make of it upon its initial release, but it has developed quite a cult following over the decades.

It’s still early days, but Parker Finn will write and direct the Possession remake. Robert Pattinson is set to produce through his Icki Eneo Arlo production company, but THR’s report states that “his acting involvement will be clarified down the road as script and schedules develop.” One would imagine him taking on Sam Neill’s role. A bidding war for the project has broken out, with A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros. all said to be taking part. Executives are reportedly thrilled with the “batshit” and “out there” story and also believe the project has “strong commercial potential.” I don’t know if I would say that about the original movie.

Finn is currently in post-production on Smile 2, which finds Kyle Gallner reprising his role from the first movie. Naomi Scott, Lukas Cage, and Rosemarie DeWitt are also set to appear in the sequel. We don’t know too much about the project, but a teaser was screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this year. Our own Lance Vlcek attended the convention and said that Scott plays a Taylor Swift-type mega-star artist who gets sucked into the curse. In true sequel fashion, everything looks bigger and slicker. The film is currently slated to hit theaters on October 18th.

Finn has previously said that he feels there’s a lot of interesting stuff left to explore in the world of Smile. “I would never want to just repeat myself or retread the same ground,” Finn said. “I’d want to make sure that there’s a new, exciting, fresh way into it that the audience isn’t anticipating. I also want to find some new ways to scare them and unnerve them. But as far as how it may connect to the first one, I’d want that to be surprising as well.

What do you think of this Possession remake?
