Dog Soldiers

Director Neil Marshall made one of the all-time coolest werewolf movies with his 2002 film Dog Soldiers (watch it HERE), so it’s shocking that we’ve never gotten a sequel… especially considering we’re living in a world where An American Werewolf in Paris exists, and there have been eight Howling movies. A few years ago, Marshall said there was “more of a chance” of the sequel happening than ever before… but in a new interview with Inverse, he gave a disappointing update, saying he fears that Dog Soldiers 2 is dead in the water.

When asked for a status update on Dog Soldiers 2, Marshall told Inverse, “I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side. I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility. We’ve been trying to get it off the ground for the past six years. I’ve got a story hammered out, but I’ve not written the script yet because I want to know if we’re actually making it or not first. It’s a good idea, and I know Kevin McKidd (who played Cooper in the first film) is on board, but everything has gone very quiet and we don’t know why. We’ll see. I can’t live my life waiting to see if it does happen. If it happens, it happens. It’s always going to be a double-edged sword, though. The fans want it, and I’d love to give it to them, but if I make a mess of it, they’re not going to thank me. The most important thing is making sure that it lives up to the first one. That’s the hardest part.

There have been rumors and premature announcements about a sequel to Dog Soldiers ever since the film made its debut in 2002. Oddly, for several years the plans for a sequel never seemed to involve Marshall, despite the fact that he had ideas for a trilogy. A screenplay for a sequel was written (not by Marshall), the project passed through the hands of directors Andy Armstrong, M.J. Bassett, and Rob Green, but the film – referred to as Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat – never made it into production. Later, there was an attempt to make a web series called Dog Soldiers: Legacy. It didn’t pan out any better than Fresh Meat did. In 2020, the sequel talks finally circled back to Marshall… but now we find that he’s having trouble getting a follow-up off the ground as well.

Over the years, we’ve heard of potential storylines involving a squad of U.S. soldiers that are also werewolves, Cooper being institutionalized, and werewolf clones. Inverse asked if any of those ideas would make it into his Dog Soldiers 2 if it were to happen, and he replied, “The thing about cloning was something that I was toying with a while ago, but it never amounted to anything. The idea of the American soldiers was something that the producers of the film were pursuing. They tried to get it made as Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat. That never happened, and it’s a good thing too because it wasn’t a very good idea. The other one was an idea I toyed with a long time ago too. The new concept for the story is fresh and acknowledges that 20 years have passed. The story is set in a confined setting but a bigger one than the first film.

Here’s hoping the sequel talks will resume soon so we’ll finally have the chance to see Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers 2.

Dog Soldiers has the following synopsis:

A group of soldiers dispatched to the Scottish Highlands on special training maneuvers face their biggest fears after they run into Captain Ryan – the only survivor of a Special Ops team that was literally torn to pieces. Ryan refuses to disclose his mission even though whoever attacked his men might be hungry for seconds. Help arrives in the form of a local woman who shelters them in a deserted farmhouse deep in the forest … but when they realize that they are surrounded by a pack of blood-lusting werewolves, it’s apparent their nightmare has just begun!

The film stars Kevin McKidd (Rome), Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon), Emma Cleasby (Doomsday), and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones).

The Smashing Machine, Dwayne Johnson, injury

Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? It smells like Voltaren and Polysporin. Dwayne Johnson is nursing a substantial injury to his right elbow, which he endured while making his new movie, The Smashing Machine. In a video posted to his Instagram account, Johnson proudly holds his injured elbow up to the camera, and it’s a sight to behold. As Johnson points out, it looks like he’s got a cantaloupe lodged beneath his skin.

“Anytime you’re filming a movie called The Smashing Machine, you’re gonna get smashed up,” Johnson says in the video. “I got banged up pretty good today. There might be some soft tissue damage in there. It’s a lot of fluid. I gotta get it out of there first before I get any kind of MRI.”

Still, because The Rock is a trooper, he says, “The pain feels pretty good. It is what it is until it isn’t.” Johnson recalls something his dad told him about pain, saying, “A day without pain is like a day without sunshine, boy.”

After cruising down memory lane, Johnson asks his followers for advice about pain relief and proper healing to get him back in the game sooner rather than later. I don’t know if soliciting medical advice from random strangers is what the doctor would order, but who knows? As someone who has suffered from chronic gout and Crohn’s disease since I was 15 (now 43), I know a thing or two about pain relief. Hit me up, Dwayne. I can prescribe some decent topical treatments for you. Have you ever heard of Solei CBD cream? Before signing off, Johnson busts out his favorite product for pain relief, a stiff glass of Teremana tequila.

Johnson plays MMA icon Mark Kerr in the upcoming drama from Benny Safdie (Uncut GemsOppenheimerGo Get Some Rosemary). Mark Kerr is a former American wrestler and mixed martial artist. As a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner, a PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion, 1992 NCAA National Wrestling Champion, 1994 National Freestyle Champion, and 4x ADCC World Submission Champion, Kerr is one of the biggest badasses to ever get into the ring.

In addition to his directorial duties, Safdie co-wrote the script, focusing on Kerr’s struggle with addiction, victory, love, and friendship in the year 2000. Likely to veer into more severe territory, The Smashing Machine gives Johnson a rare opportunity to flex his drama muscles for cameras. While some could be confused about what that looks like, Safdie is known for bringing the best out of his film stars.

We hope Johnson recovers from his injury and gets back in the ring soon!

Matthew McConaughey

There are rumors circulating that Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and the legendary Kurt Russell (Big Trouble in Little China) might end up sharing the screen in an upcoming Yellowstone sequel series – if McConaughey likes the script, whenever it might land on his desk. But while we wait to find out what’s going to happen with that project, Deadline has revealed that McConaughey and Russell just worked together on the recently wrapped crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King! Also in the cast are Cole Sprouse (Lisa Frankenstein), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Scott Shepherd (Killers of the Flower Moon), Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Jake Horowitz (Bones and All), and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass.

The Rivals of Amziah King is directed by Andrew Patterson, who received a good amount of positive attention for his feature directorial debut, the sci-fi mystery film The Vast of Night (watch it HERE), which dealt with UFO activity in 1950s New Mexico. Patterson also wrote the screenplay for his second feature, and plot details are being kept under wraps. All that has been revealed is that this is “a character-focused crime thriller” and it takes place “against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma”. McConaughey plays the titular Amziah King, whoever he may be.

Black Bear Pictures fully financed the project and produced alongside Heyday Films and G.E.D. Media. The individual producers are Will Greenfield, David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, and Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler of Black Bear. Patterson is a producer on the film as well. Heyday’s Rob Silva and Black Bear’s John Friedberg and Christopher Casanova serve as executive producers.

When The Rivals of Amziah King was first announced thirteen months ago, Schwarzman provided the following statement: “Black Bear is thrilled to partner with our friends at Heyday in supporting the bold creation that will be The Rivals of Amziah King. Andrew Patterson’s visionary filmmaking and Matthew McConaughey’s extraordinary talent are sure to deliver audiences a truly original and compelling film.

Heyman added: “When I first watched The Vast of Night it was clear me that Andrew Patterson was a remarkable talent with a singular vision. I am incredibly excited to be working with Andrew and to support him and Matthew as they bring Amziah to life and make what I believe will be an extraordinary film.
