Frank Grillo

Two years have gone by since we heard that director Steven C. Miller (Silent Night) was heading into production on a werewolf horror film that, at the time, was going by the title Year 2 – so it seems like the appropriate amount of time has passed, and now we finally have an update to share about that project: Deadline reports that Miller’s movie is now titled Werewolves and Briarcliff Entertainment and The Solution Entertainment Group are teaming up to give it a wide theatrical release in the United States on December 6th!

Starring Frank Grillo of the Purge and Captain America franchises, Werewolves will show us that a supermoon event triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back.

Grillo is joined in the cast by Katrina Law (NCIS), Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather Of Harlem), James Michael Cummings (City On The Hill) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Prodigal Son). Miller directed from a screenplay by Matthew Kennedy (Inheritance).

An image of one of the film’s werewolves can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Miller also produced Werewolves with Myles Nestel, The Solution’s Craig Chapman, Monty the Dog’s James Michael Cummings and Jim Cardwell, Pimiente Films’ Luillo Ruiz, and Sevier Crespo. Grillo serves as executive producer alongside Tom Ortenberg, The Solution’s Lisa Wilson, Rainmaker Films’ Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser, Burke Management’s Victor Burke and Vanzil Burke, and Sherborne Media’s Gary Raskin and Alastair Burlingham.

Nestel, who is co-CEO of The Solution, provided the following statement: “We are super excited to be releasing Werewolves later this year, exclusively in theatres. Our cast is incredible, from the amazing Frank Grillo to powerhouse performances from Katrina Law and Ilfenesh Hadera. The use of practical werewolves designed and built by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr (known from the Alien and Predator series) takes the genre back to its roots in a fresh and exciting way. We hope audiences will have as much fun experiencing the film in theatres as we had making it!

I have always been on board to watch a Steven C. Miller / Frank Grillo werewolf movie (especially one that also has Lou Diamond Phillips in the cast!), so I’m looking forward to checking out Werewolves in December. Are you interested in Werewolves? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

PLOT: The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

REVIEW: While most viewers have loved The Boys since it debuted, I was lukewarm on the first season. With improvements in the second and third years, I have become a big fan of the Prime Video series and its bleakly hilarious take on the superhero genre with each successive season. For the long-anticipated fourth season, Eric Kripke has upped the ante significantly after the shocking third season finale changed the dynamic for Homelander and The Seven just as much as for Butcher and The Boys Still, chock full of pitch-black humor, extreme violence, and timely satire, The Boys is better than ever, with a run of episodes that brings together long-running plots, brand-new characters, and some of the trademark shocks that fans have come to love from this series. No one is safe as The Boys brings us the most political and pertinent narrative this series has ever had, along with many surprises I did not see coming.

Season four picks up after the events of the spin-off series Gen V and finds a public divide has formed between those in support of Homelander (Antony Starr) and those in favor of Annie “Starlight” January (Erin Moriarty). The first episode finds Homelander in the middle of his trial for the very public murder of a civilian. At the same time, Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) continues her run for the White House as Vice President to Robert Singer (Jim Beaver). Still, Butcher is suffering the side effects of using Compound V as Huey (Jack Quaid), and the team keeps the pressure on stopping Neuman and Homelander. Things quickly go awry in the premiere with some shocking moments, but nothing compared to what unfolds throughout the season. The Boys has always raised the bar with how far it is willing to go to surprise audiences with sexual or violent content. Still, the most shocking part of the fourth season is how much the satirical elements of this story have aligned so closely with reality.

The divide between those who support Homelander and those who hate and fear him, The Seven, and Vought have shifted into a parallel with the split between liberal and conservative extremes in the global political landscape. The mocking look at the alt-right is no longer shrouded or subtle as showrunner Eric Kripke’s messages have evolved from Garth Ennis’ source material into something prescient, disturbing, and more entertaining than ever. While The Boys began as a comedic satire on comic book superheroes, it has evolved into a powerful dramatic series that is still very funny but humorous in stride with tense and anxious storytelling of the highest caliber. Last season featured The Deep (Chace Crawford) having sex with an octopus and the death of Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), two subplots that factor into this season. We also have the introduction of new characters Firecracker (Valorie Curry), an alt-right social media influencer, and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), who may be the only character who can go toe-to-toe with Homelander but not in the way you might expect. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also added as Billy Butcher’s close friend, Joe Kessler. The nature of Kessler in the plot has been one of the season’s biggest questions, and the answer won’t be spoiled here, but trust me, it is well worth the wait.

Throughout this season, many things shift for the main cast, including the perpetually underutilized Tomer Capone as Frenchie and fan favorite Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett. While Antony Starr plays with Homelander’s mortality a bit differently than Karl Urban’s terminally ill Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid gets a substantial subplot concerning Huey’s relationship with his dad (Simon Pegg). Erin Moriarty gets to have a lot of fun with a late-season arc involving Annie January’s personality, as does Karen Fukuhara’s eternally dying Kimiko. Of all the returning characters, Victoria Neuman remains the character I love to hate almost as much as Homelander, which is due immeasurably to the great Claudia Doumit. This season is full of romances, break-ups, deaths, and new allegiances, culminating with a season finale that not only sets the table for a huge change in the fifth season but also a potential sign of where the eventual end of The Boys may be headed.

Showrunner Eric Kripke directs the stellar finale of season four, his first time in the director’s chair on The Boys since the first season. He is joined by helmers Catriona McKenzie, Karen Gaviola, Shana Stein, Philip Sgriccia, and Frederick E.O. Toye. Toye and Sgriccia are the sole returning directors in that bunch and the only male directors this season. The Boys has always balanced criticism of alpha male machismo in the form of most of The Seven, but there is an increased focus on balancing the female characters who have long been key to this series. While this does not undermine any arcs for the men in the cast, the depth and development of the female characters are handled better here than in any other major series currently on the air. There is a clear power disparity between men and women on both sides of the divide in The Boys, which Kripke and his writing team exploit to have a dramatic and comedic impact.

Each season of The Boys has built on what came before it, and I cannot think of anything before this run of episodes that compares. Season four is the best-developed, most nuanced, funniest, and equally scariest run of The Boys yet. The repercussions of this season will be felt for the remainder of the series, however long The Boys remains on the air. Conceptually, the fourth season of The Boys is the best structured and most holistically successful run of storytelling this series has presented and shows no signs of running out of steam. Karl Urban and Antony Starr are as great as ever without carrying the series since everyone else is doing their best work. I have nothing but positive things to say about every plot path or character decision which is unheard of for a series four seasons in. The Boys is still not for everyone and will make or break some fans this season, but for those who appreciate great storytelling, this is one of the best shows out there.

Who’s game for another food fight? Prime Video starts the 4th of July pre-game early today with a Sausage Party: Foodtopia trailer that finds your favorite foul-mouthed refreshments staging a revolution to change the status quo. Humans are on the menu, and the food won’t stop fighting until they’re at the top of the pyramid! The series will premiere all eight episodes of the outrageous comedy exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide on July 11, 2024.

To celebrate the latest reveal for Sausage Party: Foodtopia, fans in New York’s Times Square enjoyed the official trailer and key art drop with a Sausage Party: Foodtopia-themed takeover surrounding the “Hot Dog in the City” sculpture by Brooklyn-based artists Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, who Times Square Arts commissioned.

Here’s the official synopsis for Sausage Party 2: Foodtopia courtesy of Prime Video:

“Based off the 2016 animated feature Sausage Party, the series Sausage Party: Foodtopia follows Frank, Brenda, Barry, and Sammy as they try to build their own food society. Original feature film cast members Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton will return. Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester are also set to lend their voices to the animated series, in addition to Will Forte, who will portray a human named Jack, and Sam Richardson, who will portray an orange named Julius.”

In the Sausage Party: Foodtopia trailer, food is alive, and it’s fighting back as payment for years of death by mastication! After Operation Dessert Storm is seemingly a success, Frank, Brenda, and their army of foodstuffs encounter a foe unlike any other: Mother Nature. As the rain falls, Frank and his army of refreshments learn the harsh truth about survival outside the food store. The only logical step is to assume control of humans, and there’s only one way to do that: Enter their butts and puppet them like Remy in Pixar’s Ratatouille. Someone should tell the food that’s not how the human body works, but I’m sure they’ll figure it out eventually.

In addition to today’s Sausage Party: Foodtopia trailer, Prime Video unpacked key art for the upcoming series, which you can see for yourself below:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Paul Giamatti, Paramount+

Star Trek fans are celebrating this afternoon after hearing about Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers, Sideways, Big Fat Liar) joining the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a recurring villainous role. The Oscar-nominated actor plays the central villain in the upcoming season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, described as “a man with an ominious part with a connection to one of the show’s cadets.”

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy “introduces us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

Last month, Holly Hunter joined the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, lending even more star power to a fan-favorite corner of the beloved science-fiction franchise. Hunter will portray the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy in the series, which is scheduled to begin production later this summer.

“Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us. The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast,” said co-showrunners and exec producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.

In addition to boarding Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Paul Giamatti plays a “key role” in the upcoming Hostel TV show. In 2013, Giamatti revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he almost made a cameo in the original Hostel: “Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out.” Now, it looks like Giamatti and Roth will make up for lost time.

What do you think about Paul Giamatti joining the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? The show is packed with severe cosmic heat between him and Holly Hunter. We have several Trekkies on staff who are over the moon about this news. Let us know how you feel in the comments section below.
