Crumble, Brian Duffield, Laika

Laika, the studio responsible for producing some of the most remarkable stop-motion animated films of all time, like Coraline, Kudo and the Two Strings, and Paranorman, is making good on a three-year-old promise to get into the live-action game with Crumble, an upcoming action-adventure film from filmmaker Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Cocaine Bear, Spontaneous). Duffield directs Crumble from his script with the promise of taking audiences on an epic adventure.

Crumble focuses on a married couple who embark on a world-traveling adventure, hoping to find a cure to an ancient curse. The project has notable producing power, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller producing alongside Aditya Sood via their Lord Miller studio. Duffield produces in addition to his directorial and scripting duties. Lord Miller’s Lucy Kitada and Nikki Baida executive produce.

“We’re so excited to partner with Brian and the entire team at Lord Miller on this special film,” said Laika’s President, Live Action Film & Series, Matt Levin. “Brian has such a singular voice and Crumble perfectly embodies the bold, emotional, and inventive storytelling that we champion at LAIKA. Lord Miller is in a class of its own and we could not ask for a better creative team to bring this story to life.”

Laika is busier than ever, having worked on several projects in various states of development, including Wildwood, a stop-motion animated adaptation of Colin Meloy’s novel. Wildwood stars the voices of Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Mahershala Ali, and more. The story is told from multiple points of view, and the book features more than eighty illustrations, including six full-color plates. In Wildwood, Prue and her friend Curtis uncover a secret world amid violent upheaval—a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. What begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

In addition to Wildwood, filmmaker and Laika Studios CEO Travis Knight says he’s developing an adaptation of Susanne Clarke’s best-selling novel Piranesi.

Here’s a synopsis for Collins’s Piranesi courtesy of Amazon:

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has.

In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays, Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times, he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Messages begin to appear, scratched out in chalk on the pavements. There is someone new in the House. But who are they, and what do they want? Are they friends, or do they bring destruction and madness, as the Other claims?

Lost texts must be found, and secrets must be uncovered. The world that Piranesi thought he knew is becoming strange and dangerous.

The beauty of the House is immeasurable; its kindness is infinite.

Piranesi is a treasure, and very dear to me. As a filmmaker, I can scarcely imagine a more joyful experience than wandering through the worlds Susanna dreamed into being,” said Knight. “She’s one of my all-time favorite authors, and with Piranesi, Susanna has created a beautiful, devastating and ultimately life-affirming work of art. I’m humbled that she chose LAIKA as her home.”

Mothers’ Instinct, a remake of the 2018 Belgian film Duelles, went into production back in May of 2022, with Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) – who also happen to be close friends in their personal lives – in the lead roles. Once filming had wrapped, Hathaway revealed that her role in the film was the hardest she had ever played, as it tapped into her own worst fear. Soon, we’ll have the chance to see her performance, as Mothers’ Instinct is set to receive a limited theatrical release on July 26th, with a digital release to follow on August 13th… and with those dates coming up soon, a new trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Duelles won nine Magritte Awards (the Belgian equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Film and Best Director. It currently holds the record for the most Magritte Awards won by a single film. Duelles director Olivier Masset-Depasse was once intended to helm this English-language telling of the story, which was scripted by Sarah Conradt-Kroehler (50 States of Fright: 13 Steps to Hell (Washington)), but it has turned out to be the feature directorial debut of cinematographer Benoît Delhomme. Here’s the synopsis: Set in the early ‘60s, best friends and neighbors Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway) both live an idyllic traditional lifestyle with manicured lawns, successful husbands and sons of the same age. Life’s perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond and a psychological battle of wills begins as the maternal instinct reveals its darker side.

Hathaway and Chastain are joined in the cast by Josh Charles (The Good Wife) and Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person In The World).

Anton fully financed Mothers’ Instinct, which was produced by Hathaway and Chastain, as well as Paul Nelson of Mosaic, Jacques-Henri Bronckart, and Kelly Carmichael, Chastain’s producing partner at her Freckle Films banner. Anton’s founder and CEO Sébastien Raybaud oversaw the project with John Zois, the company’s President of Production.

Companionship comes in many forms. What soothes one person could feel foreign to another, with people, pets, and inanimate objects bringing joy and solace to those affected by various traumas. When Suzie (Rashida Jones), a woman living in Japan, inherits Sunny (Joanna Sotomura), a domestic robot made by her husband’s company, they uncover dark truths about what happened to Suzie’s husband and son, trapping them in a spiral of violence, secrecy, and a war for power. I mean this sincerely: Sunny is my favorite TV series of 2024 so far. So, you can imagine my excitement when I was allowed to speak with members of the cast and creative team: Rashida Jones, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Annie the Clumsy, Judy Ongg, Jun Kunimura, Sunny creator Katie Robbins, and director Lucy Tcherniak.

During our discussions, Rashida and Hidetoshi reveal the secrets of their incredible on-screen chemistry, acting alongside a robot co-star and processing pain through different, unconventional outlets. Joanna Sotomura and Annie the Clumsy discuss meeting Sunny for the first time, what task they would assign a real-life housebot, getting drunk with artificial intelligence, acting as support while vying for Suzie’s attention and loyalty, their go-to karaoke jams, and what they swiped from the set. Judy Ongg and Jun Kunimura speak about bridging the gap of communication between people who refuse to come together in grief, hilarious off-camera moments, becoming a source of guidance and zen for someone in the throes of loss, and what attracts them to a show like Sunny. Finally, Katie Robbins and Lucy Tcherniak open up about adapting Colin O’Sullivan’s novel and creating a balance for Suzie’s emotional journey while sharing laughs and lightheartedness.

As I said during my interview with Katie and Lucy, Sunny is my entertainment catnip. The show creates a delicate balance of darkness and light, with Suzie’s recovery and acceptance at the core of a complicated web of intrigue. Sunny is endlessly entertaining, with powerhouse performances from all involved. It’s been a while since a show checked every box on my list, and I hope people connect with Sunny and find as much fun, comfort, and catharsis as I did.

Sunny launches on Apple TV+ on July 10, 2024.

A few years ago, we heard that a TV series adaptation of one of the greatest Westerns ever made, the 1964 Sergio Leone / Clint Eastwood classic A Fistful of Dollars, was in the works at Mark Gordon Pictures. That project, which was described as a “contemporary retelling of the story,” has never made it into production – but it looks like we’re going to be getting a new version of A Fistful of Dollars nonetheless. Deadline reports that Euro Gang Entertainment, the company founded by producers Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, is working with Enzo Sisti of FPC and Jolly Film, which produced A Fistful of Dollars, to get a feature film remake off the ground.

Deadline notes, “It’s still early in the process so production details are under wraps for now. This would most likely be English-language but that hasn’t been confirmed by the team and a writer, start date and cast have yet to be revealed.” I suppose we’ll also have to wait to find out if this is going to be a Western like the original, or a “contemporary retelling” like the TV show was going to be.

In the original A Fistful of Dollars, a stranger rides into a town known for the deadly rivalry between two of its factions-the Baxters and the Rojos. Instead of fearing for his life, the man plays the two sides to his own advantage. The film kicked off a trilogy that also includes For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

It’s difficult to imagine that a remake could come anywhere close to what Leone and Eastwood did with A Fistful of Dollars, but that film was itself an unofficial remake of the 1961 samurai film Yojimbo, directed by Akira Kurosawa. After seeing A Fistful of Dollars, Kurosawa wrote to Leone: “Signor Leone, I have just had the chance to see your film. It is a very fine film, but it is my film. Since Japan is a signatory of the Berne Convention on the international copyright, you must pay me.” Kurosawa and Toho, the company behind Yojimbo, filed a lawsuit and were awarded 15% of A Fistful of Dollars‘ revenue. Several other films have drawn inspiration from Yojimbo over the decades, with the 1996 Walter Hill / Bruce Willis film Last Man Standing being an official remake that moved the setting to Prohibition-era Texas.
