Deadpool & Wolverine just broke records over its opening weekend, becoming the highest R-rated opening of all time both worldwide and domestic, drawing in more than $440 million at the global box office… but if you (like me) haven’t made it out to see the movie yet, you should be aware that there are SPOILERS ahead: as made public at the San Diego Comic-Con, Wesley Snipes makes a cameo in the film, reprising the role of Blade, a Marvel Comics character he hasn’t played since starring in a trilogy of Blade movies twenty-plus years ago. Now he has discussed his cameo with Entertainment Weekly, and we have some quotes below.
Snipes told EW that he had accepted the fact that he was moving on from the Blade franchise, especially since Mahershala Ali has been cast to play the character in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of the property (a project that has been in development for five years now). Snipes was “moving on from them, which is okay. I did three of them, and I thought they turned out pretty good. Not so bad… So we move on to other things, and bigger and better things, as well.” But then he received a text from Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, saying, “I want to talk to you.”
“I thought it didn’t make sense to me, but [when] you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue after 20 years, you go, ‘Okay, I got to take this call. Let’s see what this is about.’ He told me the idea… They said ‘yes’ and ‘it’s a go.’ ‘If you’re in, we’re in.’ Here we are.” Snipes found it to difficult to keep the cameo as secret, but he even managed to conceal his Deadpool & Wolverine involvement from his family. A bigger challenge was getting back into Blade shape. “I wasn’t Blade ready, man. I don’t walk around as Blade every day, you know what I mean? With a trench coat and shades and fangs in my mouth. We had to work out. We definitely had to get the body, and my biggest concern was being in condition enough to deal with whatever the action was. They didn’t really tell me what the action was going to be, so I prepared for whatever that was going to come. Thankfully, I didn’t have to do as much as I thought I would because the action movies are tough. They’re not easy at all by any means. About a month into it, I got the body right… and then, with the help of a little customized foam well placed in certain areas, it was all good to go, baby. Let’s ride!“
Snipes did get to participate in an action sequence – which was shot in the freezing cold during the winter in Europe, so that wasn’t pleasant. He enjoyed the overall experience, though, and had praise for Reynolds, who co-starred in Blade: Trinity with him twenty years ago. “Some of the things he did back in those days (on Blade: Trinity), that’s not really my humor. I’m not tuned in that way. So I thought, ‘Well, it’s a little over the top for me.’ But seeing him do it in this context [in Deadpool & Wolverine] made a lot of sense. And seeing him do it and do it well, Ryan does something that most people can’t do. He’s unique in that way, and he’s found a fantastic niche for himself doing what he does. Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds all day long. So it was enjoyable. It was enjoyable to work with him. It was enjoyable to revisit.“
All that said, Snipes still supports the casting of Ali in the Blade reboot. “I shouted him out, told him he’s got all my blessings and support. I even referenced the fact that some of the challenges they’re facing now with the project, it shouldn’t be accredited to him. It’s not the actor’s fault. There’s a lot more that goes on with pulling this Blade stuff off. You need a lot of secret sauce to do the Blade thing, man. Good luck. You’re my man, though.“

Comic-Con is bringing out the stars of upcoming anticipated adaptations and one movie that has its finger on the pulse of curious fans is the new reboot of Hellboy with the smaller-scope, self-contained film Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is involved with the project closer than ever as the movie takes its plot from one of his most popular stories from the comic. The Crooked Man finds “Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man. In the comic, The Crooked Man was an eighteenth-century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil.”
Jefferson White is among the cast of the new film. White plays Tom Ferrell in The Crooked Man and as our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, got to interview the cast, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask White if his character, Jimmy, from Yellowstone will be showing up in the spin-off 6666. Bumbray would cap off the interview, “One last question I gotta ask you…” to which White obliged, “Please.” He continued to inquire, “Are we gonna see Jimmy in the spin-off Yellowstone show? Cause I hope ‘yes.’” White would the respond,
Boy, I hope ‘yes’ too. That’s a really fun job. And I’ll do it as long as they’ll have me.”
White was then told by Bumbray that Jimmy was his favorite character. A flattered White became all smiles as he showed his gratitude toward the statement, “Oh, thanks buddy! I appreciate it! Great to meet you! Thank you so much!”
Yellowstone will finish its run this November. The series’ star, Kevin Costner, will not be returning and the actor addressed his absence in a video that he posted. In the video, the Horizon star would candidly explain, “I want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5B or into the future.” Costner continued, “It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”
Back in 1994, writer/director Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin brought us the sci-fi adventure film Stargate, a box office hit that launched a franchise, being followed by multiple TV shows, books, comic books, video games, and direct-to-video features. The most popular of those follow-ups was the TV series Stargate SG-1, which ran for ten seasons and then wrapped up with the aforementioned DTV movies. It’s been a while since we got any new Stargate to watch, though – and not for lack of trying. Back in 2014, it was announced that Emmerich and Devlin would be rebooting the franchise with a new trilogy of films, starting the story over again from the beginning and tell it to its completion. Then developed the idea for a couple of years, but then it all fell apart. Last year, we learned that Stargate is one of the properties Amazon is looking to revive now that they required MGM, the home of Stargate… but if they move forward with this idea, we shouldn’t expect Roland Emmerich to be involved. In an EXCLUSIVE interview with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Emmerich indicated that he’s not interested in returning to Stargate anymore.
Bumbray caught up with Emmerich at the San Diego Comic-Con, where he was promoting his epic historical series Those About to Die, which is now streaming on Peacock. When Bumbray mentioned that he would like to see Emmerich spearhead a new Stargate TV series, the filmmaker replied, “The problem there is, it’s a very, very difficult IP. Different people own the IP and it’s very, very difficult to do stuff like that.” When Bumbray said Emmerich should be the one to make Stargate, if anyone’s going to, Emmerich said, “Yeah, but I don’t want to do it, really. I gave up.” So it seems the rights situation is so complicated, Emmerich doesn’t want to deal with it anymore.
The original Stargate had the following synopsis: In modern-day Egypt, professor Daniel Jackson teams up with retired Army Col. Jack O’Neil to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Ra, who holds the key to the Earth travelers’ safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Jackson and O’Neil must convince the planet’s people that Ra must be overthrown.
The film starred Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, Leon Rippy, John Diehl, Carlos Lauchu, Djimon Hounsou, Erick Avari, French Stewart, Christopher John Fields, Derek Webster, Jack Moore, Steve Giannelli, Rae Allen, and Richard Kind.

Eddie Murphy’s love of Star Trek is well-known. Not only did he give the franchise a shout-out in one of his classic bits from Eddie Murphy: Delirious, but in the movie Boomerang, he uses an episode (Arena) to help seduce Halle Berry’s character. Given that Eddie Murphy worked exclusively for Paramount Pictures in the 1980s, it’s no surprise that the powers that be at the studio briefly considered giving him a role in one of the films.
Indeed, it almost happened withStar Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Released in 1986, which was arguably the height of Eddie Murphy’s fame, the film sees the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise travelling back in time to 1986 San Francisco to collect a humpback whale they can use to communicate with a probe that threatens to destroy earth in the 23rd century. While there, Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy, who also directed) encounter a cetologist, Dr. Gillian Taylor, played by 7th Heaven star Catherine Hicks. She serves as a quasi-love interest for Kirk, but originally, the romantic aspect wasn’t there, and the role was earmarked for Murphy.
In the original pitch, Murphy would have played an astrophysicist who teams up with the crew, but the deal fell apart. Why? Some say Paramount got cold feet about merging their two biggest franchises together, but in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Murphy said the issue was that he didn’t want to play a modern character. He was more interested in playing a legit Trek part. As he explained, “I was gonna be the one that they met when they got to San Francisco, and I was like, ‘no, I want to beam up and be on the ship’, so I didn’t do it…they has me like talkin’ jive to Spock…”
While Murphy probably would have been hilarious in the film, in the end, his not being in the film worked out for everyone. Murphy madeThe Golden Childinstead, which was the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year, while Star Trek IV was even bigger, making $109 million and placing 5th on the year-end list.
Would Eddie Murphy have been good in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home? Let us know in the comments!
