Month: July 2024

MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl and X, is now in theatres – and if you’re interested in getting some behind-the-scenes information on one of the scenes, Vanity Fair has just released a promo video in which West and franchise star Mia Goth break down the scene where Goth’s character Maxine Minx has an unpleasant experience while getting a life cast / head mold done. It’s an interesting video that has West and Goth discussing the scene, MaXXXine, and the overall franchise for twelve minutes. Check it out in the embed above!

MaXXXine was written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film has the following synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

Goth is joined in the cast by singer Halsey, Kevin Bacon (Tremors), Elizabeth Debicki (Tenet), singer Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Bobby Cannavale (Netflix’s The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad. Our interviews with West and cast members can be viewed at THIS LINK.

MaXXXine is being produced by A24, Ti West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Mia Goth serves as executive producer.

Reactions to the movie seem to be split so far, as can be seen in the reviews we have here on JoBlo: Chris Bumbray gave the film a 6/10 and felt it paled in comparison to its predecessors, while Tyler Nichols (who was not a fan of X or Pearl) gave it a 9/10. It’s doing well at the box office, though, especially compared to how the first two movies did.

Have you seen MaXXXine? If so, let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below… and whether you’ve seen the movie or not, share your thoughts on this scene breakdown video.

The story of Kevin Costner’s new epic, Horizon: An American Saga, is one that news outlets and the movie community have analyzed as one of the biggest gambles that a modern-day movie star has gone into with a passion project. For months, it has been reported on the sacrifices that Costner has made in his career and his personal life to put his vision out into the world. This included stories of his marriage and his popular TV series being put in jeopardy as he paid all of his attention and effort into the massive undertaking of directing and starring in a multi-part epic in a genre that is no longer known for having its finger on the pulse of audiences.

The big question is: will the gamble pay off for Costner? Although a big profit would certainly be ideal, Costner has never given the impression that he was setting out to make the next Avengers or Avatar, but he wanted to tell the story he wanted in the way he wanted. Costner’s three-hour Western would attempt to compete at the summer box office and the film would open with an $11 million gross in its first weekend. As big movies have been subjected to quick home releases this year, now it looks like Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One will also be available to watch at home as it is listed for premiere for digital-on-demand on July 16.

It’s worth noting that this film, despite its lengthy runtime, is still an introduction to a bigger overall story, with Chapter Two slated to open in August. Although other movies this summer have had shortened theatrical windows, this quick home release could also be a tactic by the studio to get potential audiences interested in the upcoming entry, with viewers either succumbing to their curiosity or they are likely opting to start their journey with this saga from the comfort of their own home.

The nature of the film being such an epic but also a set up for future chapters (especially with Costner’s grand vision totaling four movies overall), the critical reception hasn’t quite taken to this film, with only a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score has been more generous, with a 71%. In the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he mentions, Horizon feels like the appetizer before a main course, with it doing so much heavy lifting in terms of set-up that you walk out of the movie feeling like you have only gotten part of an experience. As such, I feel like this movie will fare much better once more installments come out, but I still found myself thoroughly engaged from beginning to end. I’ll say this: if part two were open right now, as soon as the credits rolled, I would have walked right into a second film, and I’m eager to get more out of Costner’s epic saga.”

The time has finally arrived for a real look at Ridley Scott‘s anticipated sequel to his 2000 Best Picture winner. After months (and months) of buzz, thanks to the huge budget, it looks like Ridley Scott’s sequel gamble has paid off in a big way. The footage here is nothing short of incredible, with sharks in the coliseum, massive battles, Denzel Washington being ultra-Machiavellian, and Paul Mescal’s Lucius going up against Pedro Pascal’s Marcys Acacius in the arena. Chills people. CHILLS! The cast includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, with Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. The screenplay was penned by David Scarpa.

Here’s the official synopsis from Paramount Pictures, who are releasing the film on November 22nd:

From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.

While Russell Crowe was openly critical of the script for the original Gladiator, saying there were only 26 useful pages in the whole thing, Mescal feels the opposite about the Gladiator II script. He told Vanity Fair the sequel is about, “What human beings will do to survive, but also what human beings will do to win. We see that in the arena, but also in the political struggle that’s going on outside of my character’s storyline, where you see there’s other characters striving and pulling for power. Where’s the space for humanity? Where’s the space for love, familial connection? And ultimately, will those things overcome this kind of greed and power? Those things are oftentimes directly in conflict with each other.“

Here’s the official theatrical one-sheet plus five new character posters:

Top Gun

You may feel the need – the need for speed – at the TOPGUN training program, but you better keep that to yourself, lest you end up on the fine list. While 1986’s Top Gun undoubtedly caused an uptick in interest in the US Navy among certain demographics, their Fighter Weapons School would rather you keep your fandom to yourself. So no shirtless Anthony Edwards posters, fellas!

As it turns out, quoting Top Gun will land you a $5 fine for every infraction. As he wrote in his 2020 book, former pilot and TOPGUN instructor Cmdr. Guy “Bus” Snodgrass noted, “It is a part of our bylaws that if someone overtly references the movie — it could be a direct quote, it could be something that is really close to a direct quote — that’s an automatic $5 fine. And it’s enforced. And you are expected to pay right then. You pull out your wallet and pay the $5.” Five bucks may not sound like much but that’s can add up if you go around quoting Top Gun at every chance – Quentin Tarantino’s character in Sleep with Me would be broke before lunch!

So what’s the reason for the Top Gun fines? Really, it comes down to staying focused on why you’re there – and it’s not to land Kelly McGillis. “When you get to TOPGUN, because it is such a professional organization and you want to emphasize that you are at the top of your game, that it’s about professionalism, about good leadership, you don’t turn TOPGUN into a joke by referencing the movie.”

It took more than 35 years, but Top Gun finally got a sequel in 2022’s Maverick, which ended up being the biggest moneymaker of the year, frequently receiving credit for getting butts back in movie theaters following the Covid-19 pandemic. (The original Top Gun was also #1 of 1986.) So, will we see a Top Gun 3? Going off of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it’s a possibility, as “preliminary” conversations have been had with Tom Cruise.

What is your favorite quote from Top Gun? What would land you in the danger zone at the US Navy’s TOPGUN program?

Beetlejuice figure

Daylight come and me wan’ take this home! NECA has unveiled a 1:4 scale talking Beetlejuice figure set to coincide with the upcoming release of sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Oh, crap, that was three times! Unfortunately, the figure didn’t just appear in my living room so this might have to be an actual purchase.

Toy collectors and Beetlejuice fans will note that this isn’t an original figure but instead a re-issue of one that NECA put out in 2008 to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary. But considering those listed on eBay go for hundreds of dollars, fans might want to consider this re-issue. That said, it would have been cool if they had at least updated it for the 2024 character. As for lines the Beetlejuice figure says, they aren’t listed on the box art but the 2008 version said things like, “Thank you! Woo! That is why I won’t do two shows a night anymore, babe. I won’t. I won’t do them.” and “Go ahead, make my millennium.”

As per the official description: “Need to scare the living away from your comfy haunt? Just say “Betelgeuse” three times and you’ll summon the hereafter’s most obnoxious freelance bio-exorcist! Tim Burton’s masterful comedy Beetlejuice comes to life with this talking 18″ action figure of the Ghost with the Most. When motion activated, it speaks actual lines from the movie. Highly detailed and articulated for posing. Uses button cell batteries, included. A great addition to any fan’s collection!”

NECA is undoubtedly one of the leaders in pop culture toys, delivering some of the most fun figures and replicas for cult favorite and modern horror & sci-fi properties. I still regret not buying the life-size E.T. when it was in its original release, while I am genuinely concerned for the dudes who snatched up the life-size M3GAN that NECA put out last year…

The 18” Beetlejuice figure is up for pre-order on a small selection of sites and is expected to arrive in September, the same month that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is summoned to theaters. But prior to that, the highly-anticipated follow-up will make its premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival, which it is slated to open.

What do you think of NECA’s Beetlejuice figure? Will you be picking it up? What is your favorite NECA piece in your collection?

The Devil Wears Prada, sequel

According to Puck, a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is in early development with original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna onboard to pen the script.

The 2006 movie starred Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a smart but sensible new graduate who lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the demanding editor-in-chief of a high-fashion magazine. The film also starred Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, Miranda’s senior assistant, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, the magazine’s art director. The film was a huge success, grossing $326 million and earning Streep an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

At the moment, there are no deals in place for The Devil Wears Prada sequel, but Puck does say that producer Wendy Finerman has reportedly convinced Streep and Blunt to return. No word on Hathaway. The report also discusses a possible plot for the sequel, with Priestly still in charge of the magazine but facing a declining publishing market and forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, who is now a high-powered executive.

Fans have been keen for another installment of The Devil Wears Prada for years, but Hathaway recently told V Magazine that a sequel is “probably not” happening. That said, the actress added, “We all love each other, and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to. But there’s a huge difference in the world now with technology, and one of the things about that particular story is it was about producing a physical object. Now, with so much being digital, it would just be very different.

Lauren Weisberger, the writer of the novel that inspired the film, wrote a sequel in 2013: Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. The story takes place a decade after the events of the first novel and follows Andy and Emily as they start their own high-end bridal magazine. A third novel, When Life Gives You Lululemons, was published in 2018 and followed Emily in her new career as a Hollywood image consultant. While I haven’t seen the original movie, I know many Devil Wears Prada fans will be very excited by this sequel news.

Scarlett Johannson, Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic World 4

The next installment of the Jurassic World franchise is currently filming, and star Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) got a special welcome from franchise royalty: Jeff Goldblum.

Johansson was recently interviewed on Today to promote Fly Me to the Moon when a video from Goldblum was played on air. “Dr. Johansson, this is Jeff Goldblum. Here’s what I want to say to you. This I know: Scarlett will find a way,” he said. “Don’t get eaten, unless you want to. I love you.” In response, Johansson exclaimed, “Oh my god, I can’t believe Jeff said that to me. I think my life is complete now. I can retire.” The two actors previously worked together on Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, but Goldblum isn’t expected to reprise his role of Dr. Ian Malcolm for the new sequel.

The actress has previously expressed her enthusiasm at joining the Jurassic franchise, saying she had been trying to get her foot in the dino-door for over a decade. “I am an enormous Jurassic Park fan,” she said. “I’ve been trying to get into this franchise in any possible way for over 10 years. I’m like, ‘I’ll die in the first five minutes! I can get eaten by whatever! I’ll do craft service!’ I’ll do anything for it. The fact that it’s happened in this way at this time just is actually unbelievable.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) is directing from a script by David Koepp, who penned the original Jurassic Park screenplay. It’s been said the project is a “completely fresh take, launching a new Jurassic era, following three adults and three teens getting stuck on the Island.” In addition to Johansson, the film will also star Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Rupert Friend (Anatomy of a Scandal), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and newcomer Audrina Miranda.

Even before the release of Jurassic World: Dominion, franchise producer Frank Marshall was already keen on continuing the series. “[Dominion] is going to wrap up this [Jurassic World] trilogy, but we’re not resting on our laurels,” Marshall said. “We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to see what the future is. We have that wonderful series, Camp Cretaceous, on Netflix. We obviously want to make quality, good movies with great storytelling, great writers and directors, but we’re definitely looking to do more in the Jurassic world.

Halle Berry, Glenn Close, legal series

Halle Berry and Glenn Close are heading back to the small screen. They’re set to join the cast of All’s Fair, an upcoming legal drama series from Ryan Murphy and 20th Television.

Not much is known about the series, only that it has been described as a “glossy and sexy” procedural. The roles Berry and Close will play in the series are being kept under wraps, but it was previously announced that Kim Kardashian would star as a “top divorce attorney and the owner of an all-woman L.A. law firm.” Kardashian previously worked with Murphy on the latest season of American Horror Story.

Halle Berry and Glenn Close will also serve as executive producers on the project alongside Kim Kardashian, Ryan Murphy, Kris Jenner, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, and Holly Jeter. All’s Fair marks the first series to be developed under Murphy’s new Disney deal, with the superproducer also writing and directing for the series. Jon Robin Baitz, Joe Baken, Jamie Pachino, Laura Greene, and Richard Levine will also write for the series and serve as executive producers.

Berry doesn’t have many regular television roles under her belt. She previously starred in Extant, a sci-fi drama series produced by Steven Spielberg. In it, she played an astronaut who returns home to her family after a 13-month solo mission in outer space to discover that she has mysteriously become pregnant. The series was cancelled after two seasons. Berry will next be seen in Never Let Go, a survival horror movie directed by Alexandre Aja. The film will be released on September 27th.

Close has a little more experience on the small screen, winning acclaim for her starring role as the brilliant and ruthless lawyer Patty Hewes in Damages. She also made appearances in Will & Grace, The West Wing, The Shield, Tehran, The New Look, and more. And, of course, she’s also voiced Mona Simpson on The Simpsons close to a dozen times. She’s also part of the ensemble cast of Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which is currently filming.
