Month: July 2024

Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott turns 87 this November, the same month he releases his latest movie, Gladiator II. Only twice in his career has he ever gone four years without making a picture. So, no, his passion for film isn’t even close to dwindling.

This something that Joseph Quinn – who plays Geta in Gladiator IIpicked up on, noting quickly that Ridley Scott was a master on the set in the way he commanded and controlled both himself and everything around him. “Watching him negotiate these brutal shoot days… as you said, he’s not 32 anymore. But he conducts himself with such a vigor, and thirst, for life and also filmmaking, still—he just loves it, and that is very infectious. Working with him… I was never expecting to do that, obviously, and so I was incredibly grateful.”

One of the goals for Quinn, along with much of the rest of the cast, was to “be present” and give everything they possibly could. Through this – and the commitment of Ridley Scott – they could create a world in Gladiator II they hope wows audiences as much as it did in 2000. “Outside of making the film itself, it was a very rare experience as a human being to bare witness to ancient Rome. He built ancient Rome! Not a lot of people can do that—Ridley Scott can.” Quinn added, “He is a world builder. He creates these films that utterly transport you, and that is a very rare thing to be able to do.”

Last year’s Napoleon may not have landed as the sweeping epic Ridley Scott had hoped, but this fall’s Gladiator II – which, like Napoleon, has a similar Oscar-friendly release window – might be achieving that, as it has been said that the sequel has has some of the most grand action sequences ever captured.

Certainly such sequences were made possible with the wild budget, pegged at more than $300 million. As such, Gladiator II is yet another monumental gamble from Ridley Scott. But we – like many of our readers – have faith that he can do the story justice and won’t have us questioning if we are entertained. The trailer is set to

When Eddie Murphy broke out on Saturday Night Live and made his transition to the big screen, a lot of doors opened for him. The paychecks got higher, the popularity went widespread and a lot of Hollywood elite wanted to dine with him. Oddly enough, some of them didn’t have the kindest words about the profession Murphy chose, namely perhaps the greatest actor of them all, Marlon Brando.

In the wake of 48 Hrs., Eddie Murphy got wind that none other than Marlon Brando wanted to have dinner with him. Sure, Brando was on a hiatus and wouldn’t be making another movie until the tail end of the ‘80s, but that’s still a huge get. After one initial dinner, the two ended up hanging out at his famed Mulholland Drive residence, where Murphy couldn’t help but heap praise on his host. As he said on The New York Times’ Interview podcast, “I was just going on and on about The Godfather, and he was like, ‘Eh, The Godfather.’ Not just The Godfather — acting. He was like, “Acting is bullsh*t, and everybody can act.’” Easy for Brando, who had two Oscars years before Murphy was even trying out standup.

At the time, Murphy didn’t think much of chilling with Brando, figuring once you have a box office hit then these are just the people you associate with.

Another Hollywood legend was brought up the night Eddie Murphy and Marlon Brando hung out, too, although it is quite clear that Brando was no fan of him. “He was going, ‘I can’t stand that kid with the gun.’ I was like, ‘What kid with the gun?’ He said, ‘He’s on the poster!’ I was like, ‘Clint Eastwood?’’ ‘Yeah, that guy!’ He was calling Clint Eastwood ‘that kid.’” Mind you, Clint Eastwood was only about six years younger than Marlon Brando at the time – and that kid would soon enough be mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea…so suck on that, Marlon!

Nowadays, Eddie Murphy is of such a status that up-and-comers want to hang out with him. And he’ll hopefully give some – along with some modern comedy favorites – a shot at the loot, announcing recently that he has a plan for a remake of ensemble classic It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World in the works.
