Agatha All Along

Deadpool & Wolverine, which reaches theatres on July 26th, is the only new Marvel Cinematic Universe film we’re getting this year, but things are busier on the Disney+ / TV side of things. We’ve already gotten the live-action series Echo and the non-MCU animated series X-Men ’97 earlier this year, and before the year ends we’ll see the release of the animated shows Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Eyes of Wakanda, plus the live-action WandaVision spin-off Agatha All Along, with Daredevil: Born Again following close behind in 2025. During an interview on the Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum commented on some of those upcoming shows.

Speaking about Daredevil: Born Again, which picks up six years after the Netflix Daredevil series came to an end, Winderbaum said (with thanks to Entertainment Weekly for the transcription), “Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97, because it’s reviving something that the fans love, but it is taking it in a new direction. These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed. Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk have changed, and their characters are gonna collide in ways we’ve never seen before. It’s no longer enough to try and murder each other, there’s a whole game of politics at play.

Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Jon Bernthal, and more actors who appeared in the Netflix Daredevil series are reprising their roles for Daredevil: Born Again.

Entertainment Weekly notes that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which will begin streaming on Disney+ on November 2nd, will “focus on a teenage Peter Parker and the unique community that surrounds him, including sorceress Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln (a.k.a Tombstone), and Harry Osborn.” A premiere date for Eyes of Wakanda hasn’t been announced yet, but it looks like it will be streaming in 2024. Winderbaum said, “This is a story about Wakandan history. It’s produced by Ryan Coogler, directed by Todd Harris, who is one of our longtime storyboard artists…. It’s an awesome show, the action’s insane, the storytelling is fantastic. It’s both about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So if you’re a fan of the movies, I think this show’s gonna be a real treat.

As for Agatha All Along, which premieres on September 18th, “Agatha is really fun, but it’s really scary and it gets quite dramatic. She’s an amazing anti-hero and that show… lures you in with the fun of Halloween, and before you know it, you’re crying. It’s a Marvel brand of scary. It’s a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It’s a fun ride, but it’s a dangerous one.

2023 was a rough ride for the MCU, but it looks like there are some promising things ahead.

PLOT: Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes welcome a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run.

REVIEW: There are no bigger juggernauts in film animation than Pixar and Illumination Entertainment. With Pixar recently having absolutely monster success with Inside Out 2, eyes moved towards Universal’s moneymaker to see if it still has the juice. And while I’m sure Despicable Me 4 is going to make a boatload of money at the box office, it won’t get to the levels of Inside Out 2. And the simple fact is that it’s just not as layered, complex or even as funny. Because while Pixar seemed to take the criticism as a challenge, Illumination seems to be leaning toward the pointless.

Despicable Me 4 follows Gru and his family forced to go into witness protection after his school nemesis swears revenge against him. Gru is then coerced into helping a burgeoning villain with her heist plan, putting his world into danger. At this point in the series, it’s hard to even understand why they would break a formula that works so well. Gru’s connection with the children always works as a great throughline yet here one of the main plotlines is how his baby doesn’t like him. Anyone with half a brain is going to see how this arc goes, but the connections to the original kids feels very distant. Margo’s whole subplot gets completely forgotten at one point and Gru seemingly takes over what should have been Margo’s story. It’s one of many baffling decisions.

We need a reckoning in Hollywood when it comes to voice acting because far too many big stars are putting in minimal effort. Will Ferrell is just doing a cheap impression of Steve Carell‘s Gru. Sofía Vergara is mostly just reacting, with minimal lines. Heck, I forgot that Kristen Wiig was even involved because her character is so inconsequential. At least Joey King is putting a little something extra to her character with a deep lisp. She was one of the only people that seemed to care. Otherwise, most of these people could have been played by just about anyone, except without the massive price tag. Even Steve Carell manages to make Gru bland and uninteresting. Let’s get back to putting people back in roles who actually care.

The side story with the Minions has its moments, though it makes me question why they decided to go the Superhero route. One of many reasons the movie feels like it could have been released pre-Pandemic. So many old ideas. The humor feels so dated at times that it’s rather baffling. There’s a full minute of jokes about a credit card reader and having to pull the card out fast to get it to work. Not only does that joke feel about a decade old, but it also feels very “old man yelling at clouds.” Plus, they do know most people tap these days, right?

While not nearly as egregious as earlier this year’s The Garfield Movie, there’s not a lot of energy present in Despicable Me 4. I think it ultimately comes down to how much you enjoy the Minions and that style of comedy. They’re easily the best part, which is strange to say since I often find them juvenile. There’s nothing that’s going to offend anybody but it ultimately just feels pointless. In many ways, this feels like a spinoff where the characters’ decisions ultimately don’t affect the larger narrative. Which is never something you want for a mainline entry.

There’s a sequel to the ’90s slasher movies I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in the works, aiming for a July 18, 2025 release – and while we know Jennifer Love Hewitt is in talks to reprise the role of heroine Julie James, we’re still waiting to hear whether or not Freddie Prinze Jr. is going to agree to return as Ray Bronson. In the meantime, Prinze has reteamed with his Head Over Heels co-star Monica Potter and his She’s All That co-star Kevin Pollak for the thriller The Girl in the Pool, which is set to receive a theatrical, digital, and on demand release on July 26th, courtesy of Quiver Distribution. With that date just a few weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Dakota Gorman, who has acting credits going back to 2000 and made her feature directorial debut with the 2020 dramedy Natural Disasters, directed The Girl in the Pool from a screenplay by first-time writer Jackson Reid Williams, who was also an associate producer on the film. Williams crafted the following story: On his birthday, Tom’s life collapses when his mistress is found dead in his pool. Terrified of the consequences, and desperate to protect his family, he conceals the truth, triggering a chaotic night that threatens to unravel his perfect life.

Prinze, Potter, and Pollak are joined in the cast by Tyler Lawrence Grey (Wolf Pack) and Gabrielle Haugh (Jeepers Creepers 3).

Gorman’s acting credits include appearances on episodes of Teen Wolf, Criminal Minds, and How I Met Your Father. She gave herself a role in Natural Disasters, but it’s not yet clear if she’ll be showing up in this movie.

The Girl in the Pool was produced by Eric Brenner, German Michael Torres, RJ Collins, and Larry Greenberg.

Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley to help celebrate the 4th of July holiday. He is returning to one of his most legendary roles in Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. The previous entry in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994 and received mixed reviews. In the latest chapter of the Axel Foley saga, Detroit’s finest ditches the rickety rides of Wonder World to return to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened.

Releasing the day before illegal fireworks hit the sky and hot dogs plump on grills, reviews say Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a great way to pre-game for the patriot holiday, with Murphy slipping back into the iconic role like a glove. JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, traveled to California for the Axel F press junket, which included a film screening and interviews with the cast. Bumbray immensely enjoyed the film, giving it an 8/10 in his detailed review. He says that while the sequel doesn’t hit all the marks and staples of a classic Beverly Hills Cop movie, Axel F is more of what fans of the first two films crave.

The official logline for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F reads: “Detective Axel Foley (Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter Jane’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” In addition to Eddie MurphyBeverly Hills Cop: Axel F features the return of several original cast members, including Judge Reinhold as Lt. William “Billy” Rosewood, John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart, Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. The film is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

We want your thoughts about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Leave a comment below and share your take. While the film is out, many have not had the time to see it yet, so maybe keep the spoilers to a minimum or give a fair warning. Don’t be that person, you know? I’m sure others will appreciate your discretion.

Deadpool & Wolverine, box office, Marvel

The Marvel movie drought ends this month with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, a superhero film with more hype than “Macho Man” Randy Savage hocking Slim Jims in 1993. The film that unites Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) will make a butt-load of cash, but how much can executives and theater owners expect? NRG, Screen Engine, and other three-week-in-advance box office tracking services predict a $160M-$165M take, which would be the best year-to-date opening and a record for an R-rated movie at the box office. The first Deadpool movie, released in 2016, holds the record for a best R-rated debut with $132.4M.

NRG and Screen Engine are not the only analysts in town. Quorum says Deadpool & Wolverine could pull as much as $200M in its first three weeks of release. No matter how you slice it, the threequel is on track to boost the summer box office higher than Gina Linetti helping Captain Holt into the front car of a semi. That’s a little something for you Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans out there. I see you.

Initially, analysts thought the box office doldrums would not end until Deadpool & Wolverine slashed its way into cinemas. Still, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is the overachieving hit of the season, with over $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide! As I predicted back when I visited the legendary animation studio in March, the emotionally charged sequel is connecting with audiences in a big way, with some families saying they’ve seen the Pixar sequel four times in theaters and plan to go again.

While Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t necessarily family-friendly, parents tend to loosen restrictions on younger offspring for Wade Wilson’s wacky adventures through the Marvel Universe. What’s more, Deadpool & Wolverine could rewrite the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a part of the plot involves Wade and Logan visiting different timelines. A portion of the public wants a fresh start to following Marvel’s output, and who better to shuffle the cards than Deadpool and Wolverine?

Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Wade Wilson and James Howlett, respectively. In addition to featuring the superhero team-up of the century, the threequel finds Wade and Logan sticking their dirty fingers into the Marvel Cinematic timeline, creating chaos while foiling a nefarious plot devised by Charles Xavier’s sister, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). The MCU desperately needs a shake-up, and it sounds like Cassandra Nova and multiversal shenanigans could usher significant changes into the interconnected universe.

Deadpool & Wolverine also stars Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Rob Delaney as Peter. Deadpool 3 will also star Emma Corrin as the villain and Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA agent. The film is also expected to feature cameos from characters throughout the history of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies, with a few already being revealed in the trailer, including Aaron Stanford as Pyro.
