Month: July 2024

PLOT: After an attempt on his daughter’s life and the disappearance of his friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returns to Beverly Hills to do battle with a group of corrupt cops.

REVIEW: Right off the bat, it’s clear that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F director Mark Molloy nailed the assignment. In the movie’s first scene, we see Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley driving around his beloved Detroit, cracking a smile as Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On” fills the soundtrack. It’s not subtle, but it delivers the message loud and clear that for the first time since the second film in 1987, we can legitimately say there’s a new Beverly Hills Cop movie out, and it kicks butt. Wholeheartedly embracing an R-rating, with frequent F-bombs and surprisingly hardcore action beats, Molloy’s made a movie that will likely prove to be a summer smash for Netflix and will bring Murphy’s hardcore fans a lot of joy.

In some ways, Axel F is reminiscent of Top Gun: Maverick in that our titular character, thirty years later, is just as reckless and wild as he was in his youth, but not without a price. Axel Foley is still busting criminals left and right in Detroit. But, his career has stalled, and just like Maverick had Iceman watching his back in the last Top Gun, Axel depends on his old partner, Paul Reiser’s Jeffrey Friedman, who’s now the Chief of Police, to save his career. His personal life is also a shambles, with him divorced and estranged from his daughter, Taylour Paige’s Jane, who works as a defence attorney in Beverly Hills.

One of the nicest things about the fourth film is that it continues the vibe set in the second movie, where Axel, Billy (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) have become lifelong best friends following the first movie. The motivating factor in this sequel is that with Jane’s help, Billy has been investigating dirty cops, only for him to vanish and for Jane to be almost killed. Once Axel’s on the case, Taggart, who’s become the Chief of Police in Beverly Hills, gets forced into the old Ronny Cox role, in that he has to run interference with the politicians, as Axel and a younger cop who happens to be Jane’s ex-flame, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Bobby Abbott, do battle on Rodeo Drive.

While not especially original, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is extremely satisfying because it gives us a ton of time with the characters we already love (even Bronson Pinchot’s Serge shows up) while embracing an old-school aesthetic. Mark Molloy eschews CGI in his action scenes, keeping all the carnage practical and in-camera. At the same time, Lorne Balfe’s soundtrack is done in the vein of Harold Faltermeyer, making liberal use of his old themes and plenty of needle drops from the first two movies (and not the dumb full orchestra version of Axel F they used in the third one).

Axel F

It’s also refreshingly R-rated, with Axel dropping F-bomb after F-bomb and going into some fast-talking routines as he tears up Beverly Hills. Sadly, the requisite trip to the strip club from the first two movies is skipped here (a sign of the times?), but otherwise, this is a pretty legit Beverly Hills Cop movie.

While Murphy’s show, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton get meaty roles, with Rosewood once again the conscientious cop with a moral code, something which bonds him to Axel’s daughter, who considers him a mentor and adopted uncle. John Ashton’s Taggart is grumpy and more willing to toe the line but again gets his chance to shine as an ultimately heroic figure, while Pinchot’s Serge delivers some refreshingly old-school, un p.c laughs. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Page also prove to be solid new additions, with them both getting the vibe of the franchise. Gordon-Levitt is like Billy in that for all people underestimate him, he proves to be an exceedingly capable cop. At the same time, Paige has excellent chemistry with both Murphy and her love interest, Levitt.

My only issue with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is that the villains should have been a little more potent. While it’s very cool that they cast the legendary Kevin Bacon to play the movie’s big red herring, he’s lacking the screentime to really establish him as a huge threat, with most of the baddies here just being an assortment of faceless mercenaries and sicarios. Bacon has fun, especially towards the end, but he never comes off as quite as menacing as he could have. However, that criticism could be levied against any of the villains of the other films, who’ve always been secondary to Axel’s shenanigans.

While Axel F is good enough that a theatrical release might have made a mint, similar to producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s last couple of legacy sequels, Top Gun Maverick and Bad Boys Ride or Die, plenty, and I mean PLENTY of people will watch this one it hits streaming. If you like the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies, you’ll have a blast, with it a loving homage to OG directors Martin Brest and Tony Scott.

Now You See Me 3, release

The Four Horseman will be back in action next year as Lionsgate has slated Now You See Me 3 for a November 14, 2025 release. By the time the threequel comes out, it will have been nearly ten years since the release of the last movie.

Plot details for the magical heist sequel are being kept under wraps, but original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and Morgan Freeman are all expected to reprise their roles. It was also announced earlier this year that Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), Ariana Greenblatt (Borderlands), and Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) would be joining the project, with Pike said to be playing a “pivotal role” in the movie. I can imagine her being the latest target of the Four Horseman.

Now You See Me 3 will reintroduce audiences to “the thieving illusionists known as the Four Horseman while introducing audiences to a new generation of magicians.” The studio envisions the sequel as the launching pad for the franchise’s future. Given the fresh young cast members, you might be able to tell who this “new generation” of magicians will be.

Now You See Me 3 will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, with Eric Warren Singer, Seth Graham-Smith, and Mike Lesslie having penned various drafts of the script. Earlier this year, Jesse Eisenberg told Collider that he’s already read the script and hopes production will begin within the next six months. “Yeah, I did [read the script]. Hopefully it will happen in the next six months. I think it will, it seems like it will. Yeah, it’s really great,” Eisenberg said. “For me, the thing I love about it so much, having just read the script, it celebrates intelligence and it’s non-violent but exciting, and it’s so weird to see that because it sounds so obvious, and it sounds like that would be common, but it’s actually quite uncommon to have a movie that’s this franchise, this Hollywood-style movie that’s really just about teamwork and intelligence, rather than just violence.

Superman, cameo, Christopher Reeve

James Gunn’s Superman movie is currently shooting in Cleveland, and over the last week, we’ve seen plenty of photos emerging from the set. One such photo has revealed a very special cameo which honours Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in four movies.

Will Reeve, Christopher’s youngest son, will make a cameo in Superman. He’s said to be playing a TV reporter in the film, which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch as he works as an ABC News correspondent.

Will, along with his older siblings Matthew and Alexandra, was also featured in the Super/Man documentary, which celebrates his father’s life and disability activism following the horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. “The majority of my memories of my dad involve him after the accident because I was not yet three years old when he was injured,” Will told Variety at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. “So to see his entire life leading up until that time laid out so poetically and cinematically and authentically by our wonderful directors has been a real gift for me.” You can check out a review of the documentary from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor.

The members of the Daily Planet newsroom have also expanded for the movie, with Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live) set to play Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad) as Cat Grant, and newcomer Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds, original ideas

The much-anticipated release of Deadpool & Wolverine is just a few short weeks away, but the movie went through many different versions before Hugh Jackman agreed to return as Wolverine. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Reynolds revealed that one of the original ideas for Deadpool 3 was actually a low-budget road trip movie that was all talk and no special effects.

Literally, it was a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects. It was just a talkie-talkie road trip with me and [Karan Soni’s character] Dopinder and some of the things we collected and saw along the way,” Reynolds explained. “It wasn’t meant to be an event movie. If we’re on our way to Point C, it was meant to just get us to Point B. That was the weirdest one. I liked it. I thought it was kind of fun.” I’ll admit, that might have been kind of amazing, but I think many fans would have been starved for some of that Deadpool action.

A year after the release of Deadpool 2, Disney officially acquired 20th Century Fox, bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Reynolds was full of ideas. He pitched many of them to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, including plenty involving Wolverine, but Marvel wasn’t able to play with all their new toys right off the bat. “I don’t want to get into corporate acquisition legal laws or whatever. I don’t understand them, but there’s a lot of ’em,” Feige said. “It took a long time between whenever [the acquisition] was announced to it all getting done, so [the characters] weren’t really in our sandbox for a very long time after that first announcement happened.” Privately, Reynolds wasn’t sure if he’d ever get to play Deadpool again. “It’s not something I would’ve said necessarily publicly, but I didn’t know how a character like that would fit into that world [of the MCU],” Reynolds said.

Despite all the ideas for the third Deadpool movie, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy recently revealed that they were on the verge of pulling the plug until they got a call from Jackman. “Ryan and I were right at the edge of saying to Kevin [Feige], ‘You know what? Maybe now is not the right moment because we’re not coming up with a story,’” Levy said. “And that is the moment when Ryan’s phone rang, and it was Hugh calling from his car.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th.

The Exorcism Russell Crowe

The horror film The Exorcism, which was formerly known as The Georgetown Project and stars Russell Crowe, received a theatrical release in North America on June 21st (you can read our review HERE) – and now we’ve learned that it’s scheduled for VOD release just two and half weeks after it hit the big screen. As of July 9th, genre fans will have the chance to watch The Exorcism in the comfort of their own home.

Crowe recently played real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, which could turn out to be a franchise starter. He actually worked on this movie before making The Pope’s Exorcist – in fact, The Exorcism was first announced four and a half years ago. So it’s good to see it finally making its way out into the world.

Coming our way from Miramax, producer Kevin Williamson, and Outerbanks Entertainment, The Exorcism sees Crowe taking on the role of Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.

Crowe is joined in the cast by Ryan Simpkins (Fear Street Part Two – 1978), Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water), Chloe Bailey (Praise This), Adam Goldberg (The Equalizer), David Hyde Pierce (Frasier), Samantha Mathis (Broken Arrow), Tracey Bonner (Creepshow), and Adrian Pasdar (Near Dark).

Joshua John Miller directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with M.A. Fortin. The duo previously wrote The Final Girls and developed the USA television series Queen of the South. A former actor with several horror credits to his name (including Near Dark), Joshua John Miller also happens to be the son of Jason Miller, who played Father Karras in The Exorcist, a supernatural horror film that was partly filmed in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. So it’s interesting to see that elements of this story reflect Miller’s own life. The Final Girls was also about the child of a popular genre star.

Williamson produced The Exorcism with Ben Fast and Bill Block. Padraic McKinley, Scott Putman, Andrew Golov, and Thom Zadra serve as executive producers.

Have you seen The Exorcism during its theatrical run, and will you be watching the movie now that it’s getting a VOD release? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
