Month: July 2024

The upcoming TV series Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy HERE), was originally meant to be a Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario earlier this year, aiming for a 2025 premiere – and just a week after revealing the names of ten cast members, Deadline has just named another one: Rudy Mancuso of Música is set to play a recurring role in the series. Details on his character have not been shared.

Mancuso joins a cast that includes the previously announced Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason), James Remar (Dexter), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Stephen Rider (Daredevil), Alixandra Fuchs (Hatfields & McCoys), Kimberly Guerrero (The English), Dorian Grey (Star Trek: Discovery), Thomas Mitchell (Gangland Undercover), BJ Harrison (Family Law), Peter Outerbridge (Saw VI), Shane Marriott (Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent), Chad Rook (Billy the Kid), Joshua Odjick (Little Bird) and Morningstar Angeline (Westworld). We don’t know anything about the characters they’ll be playing, either. In fact, the only character we know anything about is Pennywise, the evil clown. Bill Skarsgård is on board to reprise that role.

Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, are the showrunners on Welcome to Derry. The show is being executive produced by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling director/producer duo that was behind the two It movies, through their production company Double Dream. Kane and Fuchs are also executive producing, as are Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin. The series is produced by HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television.

Fuchs has written the script for the first episode, working from a story he crafted with the Muschiettis.

Stephen King had this to say about the series: “I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!“ The Muschiettis added, “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.

Director Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters, a long-awaited follow-up to director Jan De Bont’s 1996 classic disaster film Twister, is set to reach theatres on July 19th – and as of right now, it looks like it could do some big business… but you never know what’s going to happen with the box office these days. Before Twisters reaches the big screen, The Asylum has already swooped in and released their latest mockbuster, The Twisters, on digital and in select theatres. You can watch a trailer for The Twisters in the embed above.

The film was directed by Michael Su, who has previously directed Death Count, Bridge of the Doomed, Night of the Tommyknockers, 2025 Armageddon, Transmorphers: Mech Beasts, Bloodthirst, and Snow White and the Seven Samurai – and that’s just what he has made over the last few years. He’s currently in post-production on Bikers vs. Werewolves, and also happens to be an incredibly prolific cinematographer.

On The Twisters, Su was working from a script by Jeffery Anderson (Alien Apocalypse), who crafted the following story: Dozens of deadly tornados converge in the Midwest, merging into a mega twister set to obliterate everything for hundreds of miles.

The Twisters stars 80s pop star Tiffany, who also starred in Mega Piranha and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. Also in the cast are Kayla Fields (The Exorcists, Top Gunner: America vs. Russia), Paul Logan (America Is Sinking, Days of Our Lives), Curtis Strong (Father of Lies, Smelly Consequences), and Mark Justice (Clown Motel, Murder Syndicate).

If you want to catch The Twisters on the big screen, you’ll have the chance to do so at these theatres:

Laemmle – Glendale, California
Hickory Ridge Cinemas – Brunswick, Ohio
Trylon Cinema – Minneapolis, Minnesota
O Cinema – South Beach, Miami, Florida
Aurora Cineplex – Roswell, Georgia

The Twisters was once going by the title Tornadopocalypse, but apparently The Asylum wanted to make it even more clear that this project is a Twisters mockbuster, so they changed the title.

What did you think of the trailer for The Twisters? Will you be watching both this movie and Twisters this summer? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

eddie murphy, nutty professor

Axel Foley makes his glorious return to Beverly Hills this week with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F gracing our home screens. And while Axel is one of Eddie Murphy’s most famous characters, there is no shortage of iconic roles from the comedian. Audiences have gravitated towards the likes of Axel, Reggie Hammond from 48 Hrs., Akeem from Coming to America, or even Chandler Gerald from The Golden Child. However, Murphy himself feels his best performance (or rather performances) comes from the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor, in which he famously played the Klump family, minus the child, as well as a take on Richard Simmons.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Eddie reflects on his past performances. The interviewer brought up the film Bowfinger and praised Murphy’s performance (where he also played multiple roles as twins). However, Murphy still holds Nutty Professor at the top. The Beverly Hills Cop star stated,

For me there’s no comparison. I like Bowfinger, but Nutty Professor – that stuff is real. Those makeups that Rick Baker did, that turn you into another person and there’s no sign of me: I could walk in a room, and a person wouldn’t even know it was me. Let’s put it this way: I like Bowfinger, but I could think of 20 other actors that could have played that role. I can’t think of another person that could do Nutty Professor.

Murphy himself is a hyphenate entertainer with his origins going back to the stand-up comedy world. The big question that sits in the back of everyone’s mind is if he’d ever make a return to the stage after 1987’s Eddie Murphy Raw became his swan song.

Murphy addresses, “I used to have little periods where l’d be like, ‘I’m going to do it again.’ The closest I got to doing it again was right before the pandemic. Because I had done Saturday Night Live, and I was like, ‘Let me go do one standup special and bring it all full circle.’ Then the pandemic hit, and when you’re stuck in the house for two years — I wasn’t going, ‘When I get out of here, I want to do stand up again!’ Here’s a good analogy. It’s like somebody that was in the military. They were on the front line in Vietnam, and they got all these medals because they did all this amazing stuff. Then they moved up and became a general. So it’s like going to the general and saying: ‘Hey, you ever think about going back to the front line? You want to have bullets whiz past your ear again?’ No!”

We got to sit down with Eddie Murphy for our own interview, which you can watch HERE.

A few weeks ago, something absolutely incredible happened. On behalf of JoBlo.com, I was invited to attend the world premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in Beverly Hills! While there, I got to interview the entire cast, including Eddie Murphy. To give this a little context, I was born in ’81, and I grew up idolizing Murphy and watching all of the Beverly Hills Cop movies over and over. And yes, I said ALL  – even 3. So, being invited to the glamourous premiere was pretty heady stuff. Heck, when I was there, I even got to meet another childhood hero of mine, Bronson Pinchot, from Perfect Strangers (if you’re an eighties kid, you’ll understand).

I’ve already posted my Eddie Murphy interview (check it out here), but today, I’m getting to post a lot more. In the video above, you can see me interviewing the whole cast, but here are my thoughts on each of them.

Jerry Bruckheimer: When meeting this mega-producer, I told him that his films are largely responsible for what I do today, and that’s a fact. Beverly Hills Cop, Flashdance, The Rock, Top Gun, Con Air, and so many others gave me an insane amount of joy while I was coming of age, and it was amazing to meet him.

Kevin Bacon: Another legend, Bacon is known for being down to earth. Indeed, when I met him, he shook my hand and said, “Hi, I’m Kevin,” which, naturally, led to me geeking out a little bit as he’s another guy I grew up watching. Funny story: In between interviews, I heard him talking with one of his assistants about how excited he was to see Kyle McLachlan at the premiere. I guess even movie stars get star-struck.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: A massive star in his own right, Levitt got a kick out of how excited I was to be at the junket. In our chat, he told me he could relate, as we’re the same age and, like me, he grew up watching these films.

Mike Molloy: The director of Beverly Hills Cop, Axel F, grew up watching these movies like me, and he spoke to me about how he wanted to pay homage to Martin Brest, Tony Scott, and composer Harold Faltermeyer with his legacy sequel.

Judge Reinhold and John Ashton: These were the most touching interviews of all. Both men seemed so delighted to be back in the sequels, and their pretty large roles set up future entries into the series. Having loved the latest movie, I hope it happens.

Make sure to hit our Originals Channel at 7 pm ET for the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F movie review!
