Actor Dominic Monaghan wasn’t a big gamer growing up, but that all changed when he first played Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III on PS2. The open-world crime simulator basically blew his mind and revealed just how far games had come from Pac-Man.

Sirens are dangerous creatures. If you listen to their hypnotic song, they’ll pull you into the murky depths and devour your soul. Beyond the myth, sirens exist in people who lure others into a false sense of comfort and protection, grooming them with nefarious intentions through cult-like behavior and false promises. As disturbing as that prospect is, it makes for fantastic storytelling and televised entertainment. According to reports, Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right, Still Alice, Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus, Miss Sloane, The Bold Type), and Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Superman) will star in Sirens, a darkly comedic limited series coming to Netflix.
Spearheaded by Emmy-nominated writer and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler (Maid) and executive produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap, Sirens is an adaptation of Metzler’s play Elemeno Pea. Told throughout a single weekend, Sirens has the following logline: “Devon (Fahy) thinks her sister Simone (Alcock) has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell (Moore). Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say WTF, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be.”
Fahy’s Devon DeWitt is in a downward spiral and feels trapped in her hometown. She’s funny, charming, and protective, especially when her sister Simone is concerned. Simone (Alcock) is witty, intelligent, and competitive. She loves working for her new boss, Michaela Kell (Moore) and wants nothing more than to get a taste of her employer’s high life. As Michaela and Simone grow closer, Devon tries to drive a wedge between them before Simone loses herself in a life of luxury, shady deals, and soul-sucking philanthropy.
Metzler’s creative relationship with Netflix kicks into high gear with Sirens, following her success with the Margaret Qualley-led series Maid. Said to be wickedly funny, deceptively dark, and a little bit steamy, Sirens sounds like the perfect platform for Moore, Fahy, and Alcock to strut their stuff. We’re excited to learn more as the project develops.

Closely following the release of Andrew McCarthy’s documentary / filmed therapy session Brats, which reveals the impact the publication of the article that dubbed some of the young actors of the ’80s “the Brat Pack” had on McCarthy’s life and career (despite the article specifying that McCarthy was not a member of the Brat Pack), comes the news that McCarthy has a role in the sci-fi thriller Orion, which has just wrapped production in New York. Also in the Orion cast are Debby Ryan (Shortcomings), Drew Van Acker (Last Survivors), Karin Ann (The Tattooist of Auschwitz), Natalia Lesz (Krime Story), Daniel Bisla (Ghost Adventures), and Theodora Miranne (The Blacklist: Redemption).
Directed by Jaco Bouwer (Gaia) from a screenplay by first-time writer Anne Vithayathil, the film centers on a heated interrogation between a U.S. Intelligence expert tasked to help an amnesiac astronaut recover his memory in order to determine “who” or “what” killed the rest of the crew before they crash landed back on Earth.
Van Acker is producing Orion with Scott Army, Elle Army, and Sunil Perkash. Perkash told Deadline that Orion is “a very unique world building sci fi thriller that relies on incredibly strong performances from all of the cast and the meticulously curated world building by our director, Jaco Bouwer. We could not be more excited to bring our clever twisting and turning film to audiences worldwide soon.“
Despite McCarthy believing that the “Brat Pack” label that some, including himself, mistakenly thought was applied to him in addition to some of his St. Elmo’s Fire co-stars had a negative impact on his career (we know for sure the “Brat Pack” label killed a movie he was going to do with Emilio Estevez), he has continued working steadily as an actor over the decades, even scoring a post-Brat Pack hit with Weekend at Bernie’s, and has recently become a prolific TV director as well. Orion sounds like an interesting project, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Creed and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler keeps adding to his slate of projects. He’s currently developing a reboot of the TV series The X-Files for Fox and is in production on an untitled supernatural thriller starring Michael B. Jordan for Warner Bros., a project that may or may not be about vampires fighting the KKK in the 1930s. A few days ago, we learned that Coogler is producing an adaptation of the BOOM! Studios graphic novel series A Vicious Circle for Universal Pictures… and Deadline has also confirmed that Coogler is producing an adaptation of the Duane Swierczynski novel California Bear for 20th Century Studios.
California Bear (pick up a copy HERE) follows four unlikely vigilantes whose decision to take justice into their own hands pits them against the villain behind California’s coldest murder case. Here’s the full description: NONE OF YOU ARE SAFE. “KILLER”: Jack Queen has been exonerated and freed from prison thanks to retired LAPD officer Cato Hightower. But when guilt gnaws at Jack, he admits: “I actually did it.” To which Hightower responds: “Yeah, no kidding.” You see, the ex-cop has a special job in mind for the ex-con… THE GIRL DETECTIVE: Fifteen-year-old Matilda Finnerty has been handed a potential death sentence in the form of a leukemia diagnosis. But that’s not going to stop her from tackling the most important mystery of her life: Is her father guilty of murder? GENE JEANIE: Jeanie Hightower mends family trees for a living, but the genealogist is unable to repair her own marriage. And her soon-to-be ex may have entangled her in a scheme that has drawn the bloody wrath of… THE BEAR: A prolific serial killer who disappeared forty years ago, who is only now emerging from hibernation when the conditions are just right. And this time, the California Bear is not content to hunt in the shadows… From two-time Edgar nominee Duane Swierczynski, California Bear is clever, moving, and surprising as it takes aim at the true crime industry, Hollywood, justice, and the killers inside us all.
Gary Lennon, the showrunner and executive producer of the Power spinoff series Power Book IV: Force, is writing the screenplay for the film adaptation. Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian are producing through their company, Proximity Media, while Rebecca Cho is executive producing and overseeing the project with Hannah Levy for Proximity. Rashonda Joplin, 20th Century Studios’ Director of Production, and Catherine Hughes, Creative Executive, are shepherding the project. Head of Literary Affairs, Clare Reeth, brought Swierczynski’s novel to the studio.

The heat is on the street as Eddie Murphy slips back into the iconic role of Axel Foley for a preview of the upcoming sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Netflix is working around the clock to let everyone know Axel is back, and today, we get to watch the first five minutes of the upcoming film! Some people say old habits die hard, and Murphy is a shining example of that adage as he reprises the role that helped launch his Hollywood career into the stratosphere. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F hits Netflix on Wednesday, July 3, just in time for everyone to make the sequel a part of their Fourth of July celebrations!
In Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F preview, Eddie Murphy cruises the streets of Detroit while observing the people and culture of one of the nation’s most eclectic melting pots. As Axel slowly creeps past familiar faces, fellow officers greet him with a smile while potential law-breakers give him the finger. Axel laughs off the harsh interaction, proving he’s still a man of the people. Axel eventually finds his way to a hockey game, where he’s got more on his mind than the brutal ballet of blades, ice, and chilly rivalry.
“You’re kind of the reason I got into police work in the first place,” Axel’s colleague (Kyle S. More) tells him at the end of the clip. He’s thrilled to be watching a hockey game with him — but a little surprised when he realizes Axel is actually there to investigate a potential robbery. More’s character is about to discover what working alongside his idol is like. Let’s hope he survives the experience.
The official logline for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F reads: “Detective Axel Foley (Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter Jane’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” In addition to Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F features the return of several original cast members, including Judge Reinhold as Lt. William “Billy” Rosewood, John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart, Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. The film is slated to be released on Netflix on July 3rd.
