Jaws

Just a few days ago, we learned that National Geographic, Amblin Documentaries, and Nedland Media are teaming up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest movies ever made, director Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws, with a documentary called Jaws @ 50. Now Deadline reveals that Jaws @ 50 has some competition, as distributor Newen Connect is working with directors Olivier Bonnard and Antoine Coursat on their own Jaws documentary, Jaws: Making a Splash in Hollywood!

A Capa production for Arte France, Jaws: Making a Splash in Hollywood will feature vintage interviews with Spielberg and cast member Richard Dreyfuss, as well as new interviews with “Wendy Benchley, marine conservationist and widow of Jaws author Peter Benchley, Jaws screenplay co-writer and actor Carl Gottlieb, actress Lorraine Gary, who played Ellen Brody, Joe Alves, production designer of Jaws (he also directed the third Jaws film), writer Matthew Robbins, who contributed to the Jaws screenplay, and Ian Shaw, son of Robert Shaw, aka “Quint.” Ian Shaw wrote the Broadway play The Shark Is Broken about the relationship of his dad, Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider (“Brody”) on set.”

Chloé Persyn, head of factual distribution for Newen Connect, believes there’s plenty of room for two new Jaws documentaries, and Bonnard agrees – especially since Jaws @ 50 is expected to dig into the making of the film, while Jaws: Making a Splash in Hollywood will be a look at the way Jaws dramatically changed Hollywood, spurring the studios to focus virtually their entire attention and business model on creating gigantic hits.

Bonnard said, “There’s a before and an after Jaws. Very unknowingly, but Spielberg basically made the very first blockbuster… It was a very realistic movie shot entirely on location with actors who were not huge stars at the time. And yet it’s the template for the big Hollywood blockbusters that Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark and everything are going to build upon. Very, very often I think Hollywood tended to forget that Jaws also had some very, very well drawn characters and the first half of the movie is setting up those characters, the dynamics between them, which ultimately pays off so well in the second half.

Coursat added, “This movie, which is like a happy accident, a series of happy accidents, Hollywood basically tries to make it into a formula. And there’s no encapsulating that magic again.

Does Jaws: Making a Splash in Hollywood sound interesting to you? What do you think of the fact that we’re getting two new Jaws documentaries for the 50th anniversary? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Briana Middleton

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and we’ve previously heard that BAFTA Award-nominee Callum Turner of Masters of the Air and The Boys in the Boat will be playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case. Now Deadline reports that Briana Middleton of Sharper and The Tender Bar is taking on the role of Case’s partner Molly, “a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes.”

Created for television by Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and JD Dillard (The Outsider), Neuromancer will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

Gibson’s novel has the following description: Case was the sharpest data thief in the matrix—until he crossed the wrong people, and they crippled his nervous system, banishing him from cyberspace. Now a mysterious new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run at an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, a mirror-eyed street samurai, to watch his back, Case is ready for the adventure that upped the ante on an entire genre of fiction. Neuromancer was the first fully realized glimpse of humankind’s digital future—a shocking vision that has challenged our assumptions about technology and ourselves, reinvented the way we speak and think, and forever altered the landscape of our imaginations.

Gibson, Roland, and Dillard are executive producing the series with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell of Skydance Television, Anonymous Content; Drake, Adel’ Future’ Nur, and Jason Shrier of DreamCrew Entertainment; and Zack Hayden.

Hellboy, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, trailer, Jack Kesy

Is the fandom ready for another Hellboy? We’re about to find out as Jack Kesy (12 Strong) steps into the role of Big Red for the first Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer. As the third actor to step into the boots of Mike Mignola’s flagship character, Kesy is already fighting an uphill battle while stacked against Ron Perlman and David Harbour. Kesy’s Hellboy is sure to be scrutinized as fans hold the new trailer against the flames of online opinion.

Today’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer finds Mignola’s kitten-petting, pancake-eatin’ hellspawn in the scenic hills of Appalachia, where nightmare creatures are said to dwell. As Hellboy surveys the land, he estimates something “smells like death.” Horrific visions follow, with a woman falling prey to a giant snake, rituals gone awry, and a mysterious figure dubbed the Crooked Man, making the woods more dangerous than usual.

In Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Big Red and a rookie BRPD agent (Adeline Rudolph) become stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia, only to discover a small community haunted by witches, led by the Crooked Man. “According to local legend, Jeremiah Witkins was one of the first settlers in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia,” says the Hellboy Wiki about the Crooked Man. “He built his house in an area called The Hurricane. He was also one of the worst men in his lifetime, amassing his fortune from the misery of others. Stirring conflict between his fellow settlers and the native tribes, he sold liquor and guns to both sides during both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Witkins was eventually hanged for his crimes, and his fortune was dispersed to the winds, but his name and memory became cursed among the locals. However, because of his impressive record of sin, “the Devil” sent Witkins back to the mortal world as a demonic soul collector.”

Jefferson White (Yellowstone) co-stars in Hellboy: The Crooked Man as Tom Ferrel, with Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale as the Crooked Man. Brian Taylor (Mom and Dad, Gamer, Crank) directs Hellboy: The Crooked Man from a script by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden.

What do you think about Ketchup Entertainment‘s Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer? Does the movie look fan-made, as some people say in the comments? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Aragorn Hunt for Gollum

One does not simply sign on for a movie for the paycheck…OK, so a lot of people in Hollywood do, but as Viggo Mortensen put it, it’s going to take something far more important than a salary for him to reprise Aragorn in the forthcoming The Hunt for Gollum.

A fan favorite, Aragorn would certainly be a welcome addition to The Hunt for Gollum, but Viggo Mortensen can’t guarantee anything at this point. After all, he hasn’t even been sent a screenplay. As he told The Hollywood Reporter, “I haven’t read a script. So I don’t know. The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends…Lately, I’ve been lucky and it hasn’t for a while.”

We don’t foresee Viggo Mortensen in the unemployment line lately, so a lot is truly riding on The Hunt for Gollum’s script if we are going to see Aragorn – or any beloved Lord of the Rings character – return. With original trilogy writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens returning for scriptwriting duties, many fans of the series do have confidence on that front. But would bringing characters like Aragorn, Frodo and more be natural or would it feel as if they were shoehorned in just to make fans applaud? As of now, Andy Serkis – who will also be directing – has teased that “there may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back.”

Viggo Mortensen has been open about returning as Aragorn for The Hunt for Gollum before, expressing that he is such a fan of the character that he wouldn’t object to playing him again if it made sense for him and the story. While much of the rest of the original Lord of the Rings cast has kept relatively quiet on the matter, it might just take one star to rule them all and pull them back in for one more outing.

Peter Jackson previously explained why now was the time to explore Gollum more than he previously has been and whether or not we will see some familiar faces. “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.“

Do you think The Hunt for Gollum needs other Lord of the Rings characters to be a success or can a complete story be built around the character? Give us your thoughts below.
