I Am Legend 2, Steven Caple Jr

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has expressed an interest in snagging Steven Caple Jr. (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) to direct I Am Legend 2, which will star Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. The outlet notes that it’s still in the early stages, and no deal has been drafted, but it would make for a fun reunion as Caple Jr. directed Jordan in Creed II.

Akiva Goldsman, who is writing and producing I Am Legend 2, recently said, “There will be some good news shortly” about the sequel. He wrote a second draft for the project after meeting with Smith and Jordan, and while he didn’t spill any story details, he did say, “The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular — an exciting playground for all of us — not your father’s I Am Legend.

Loosely based on Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name, I Am Legend starred Will Smith as a U.S. Army virologist who struggles to develop a cure for a virus that has wiped out most of mankind while also defending himself from a bunch of nocturnal mutants. While the theatrical version ended with the death of Smith’s character, the sequel will go with the alternate ending in which he survived.

Last year, Goldsman told Deadline that the sequel would take place a “few decades” after the first movie. “I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the Earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York,” Goldsman said. “I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless. We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.

In A Violent Nature, sequel

Johnny’s back, baby! Variety reports that a sequel to In a Violent Nature is in the early stages of development from IFC Films and Shudder.

Unlike other slasher movies, In a Violent Nature stuck with the killer, a Jason Voorhees-type figure who slowly stalked victims throughout the woods before dispatching them in a variety of extremely brutal ways. The news of a sequel was unveiled during the Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with Johnny himself making an appearance to terrify the audience. Chris Nash, who wrote and directed the first film, will return to pen the screenplay for the sequel.

‘In a Violent Nature’ demonstrated that there continues to be a yearning for new perspectives in the horror landscape. We knew immediately that this distinctive take on the slasher would enthrall fans and are glad to see the community embrace a new slasher icon in Johnny,” said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks’ film group. “With the sequel, we aim to prove that Johnny can be bigger, meaner, and his kills can only get more impressive.

Producer Peter Kuplowsky added, “‘In a Violent Nature’ was originally conceived as a meta-sequel within a fictional slasher series, so we were always imagining mayhem beyond the scope of the original film. That we now have the opportunity to continue following Johnny on his restless walk has us feeling incredibly grateful to our incredible partners at IFC Films / Shudder who believed in Chris’ vision from day one. We are thrilled to return for a new chapter and are excited to deploy Johnny as a conduit to further experiments in the genre.

The first film proved to be quite divisive, with some viewers turned off by its slow, plodding nature. Some of the kills, the Yoga kill in particular, proved to be highly memorable, but our own Tyler Nichols wasn’t a fan. “In A Violent Nature is easily the most disappointed I’ve been with a horror film in quite some time,” Nichols wrote in his review. “As a massive slasher fan, I had very high expectations. The idea of deconstructing the genre and elevating it is a lifelong dream for most fans. Or heck, even simplifying it and distilling it down to its essence could have also worked. Yet this does none of that. It simply takes a very bland slasher script, and gives it some Gus Van Sant camerawork and editing. And when that results in 70% of the movie just being a guy walking for long periods; it ultimately feels pointless.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

A teaser poster for In a Violent Nature sequel was also released, featuring Johnny’s weapon of choice. Are you excited by this horror sequel?

Invincible, renewed, Sausage Party

You can’t keep Invincible down, as Prime Video has renewed the animated superhero series for a fourth season. Additionally, they have also renewed Sausage Party: Foodtopia for a second season and renewed Hazbin Hotel for a third and fourth season.

Based on the comic series by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), Invincible follows Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), the son of an extraterrestrial superhero known as Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Mark later inherits his father’s abilities, including great strength, flight, speed, and some invulnerability, and becomes the superhero known as Invincible. He also discovers that his father’s race, the Viltrumites, doesn’t exactly have peaceful intentions toward Earth. In addition to Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons, Invincible also features the voices of Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, and more.

As far as how many seasons Invincible could last, Kirkman isn’t certain but said last year that seven or eight sounds about right. “I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target,” Kirkman said. “I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough. But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic. And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do. I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is based on the 2016 animated movie Sausage Party and follows Frank, Brenda, Barry, and Sammy as they try to build their own food society. Original feature film cast members Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton returned, with Natasha Rothwell and Yassir Lester lending their voices as well. Will Forte, who also plays a human named Jack, with Sam Richardson portraying an orange named Julius. You can check out a review from our own Steve Seigh right here.

Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons. After yearly extermination imposed by angels, she opens a hotel in the hopes that patrons will be “checking out” into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal, her devoted partner Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film-star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When a powerful entity known as the “Radio Demon” reaches out to assist Charlie in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become reality.

Creature Commandos, DC, Comic-Con, teaser trailer

The first teaser trailer for Creature Commandos was released at Comic-Con today. It features Rick Flag Sr. meeting with Amanda Waller at Belle Revue prison and introduces the other members of the monster-centric team. You can check out the teaser below.

James Gunn also appeared via video to introduce the new DC Studios logo, and fans should be very familiar with it.

DC Studios, new logo

As you can see, the new DC Studios logo is based on the classic logo designed by Milton Glaser, which served as the main logo for nearly three decades, from 1977 to 2005. “Definity for the me, and many generations of fans, that particular logo defined DC in its heyday,” said DC president and publisher Jim Lee. “I remember during the renaissance of DC in the 1980s, with Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, The Shadow coming out, that was the DC logo. In the minds of many fans, that is the mark that defined the DC brand. It’s exciting to bring it back.

The new logo will start appearing on all DC comics, toys, and merchandising beginning this October, as well as all movie and TV projects. A motion graphic will feature Superman, as drawn by co-creator Joe Shuster, bursting out of chains before the new logo appears. “We love the simplicity of the MGM lion,” said DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. “It’s timeless, classic. And we thought, ‘What are the elements that we have for something like that?’ And Superman felt like that for DC.

The cast of Creatures Commandos includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as The Bride, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Steve Agee as John Economos, and Sean Gunn as Weasel.

One of the big goals of the new DC Universe is continuity between all aspects of the franchise, be it live-action movies, television, animation, or video games. Once cast, the same actor is expected to play their role in every medium, and the biggest example of that (so far) is Frank Grillo. In addition to Creature Commandos, the actor will reprise his role in the second season of Peacemaker and will also make an appearance in the upcoming Superman movie.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol

The days of The Walking Dead are over – but now we’re in the era of the continuation spin-offs, with both The Walking Dead: Dead City (check out our review HERE) and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (you can read our review HERE) heading into their second seasons, with the Daryl Dixon show gaining the extra subtitle The Book of Carol for season 2. Dead City and Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol panels were held back-to-back at the San Diego Comic-Con today. First up, a new teaser trailer for the second season of Dead City!

Eli Jorné, who wrote and co-executive produced the The Walking Dead for multiple seasons, serves as showrunner on The Walking Dead: Dead City. This show sees “Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.” As you can see from the teaser trailer, Dead City will return in 2025.

Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have been playing Maggie and Negan since seasons 2 and 6 (respectively) of The Walking Dead. They are joined in the cast by Mahina Napoleon (NCIS: Hawai’i), Zeljko Ivanek (Madam Secretary), Gaius Charles (Fright Night Lights), Jonathan Higginbotham (Shining Vale), Trey Santiago-Hudson (You Hurt My Feelings), and Charlie Solis (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). It was recently announced that Kim Coates of Sons of Anarchy will be playing a gang leader named Bruegel in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, and there’s a quick glimpse of him in that behind-the-scenes video.

Cohan, Morgan, and Jorné are executive producing The Walking Dead: Dead City with Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe.

The first season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon had the following synopsis: Daryl (Norman Reedus) washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why. The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home. As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.

The six episodes of The Book of Carol pick up where The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon left off, following fan-favorite characters Daryl Dixon (Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). They both confront old demons while she fights to find her friend and he struggles with his decision to stay in France, causing tension at the Nest. Additionally, Genet (Anne Charrier)’s movement builds momentum, setting Pouvoir on a violent collision course with the Union of Hope in the fight for France’s future.

In addition to Reedus, McBride, and Charrier, the show’s cast includes Clémence Poésy, Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, Laika Blanc Francard, Romain Levi, Eriq Ebouaney, and Manish Dayal. Showrunner David Zabel serves as executive producer alongside Reedus, Scott M. Gimple, Angela Kang, Greg Nicotero, Brian Bockrath, and Daniel Percival. AMC Studios is producing.

Doctor Who, spinoff

Disney and the BBC announced a new Doctor Who spinoff series at San Diego Comic-Con today. The five-part series, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea, will focus on the Sea Devils, an old foe from the 1970s.

The War Between the Land and the Sea will star Russell Tovey (Being Human) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki). Both actors have appeared in the Doctor Who franchise before, but they will be playing new characters in this series. A few returning Doctor Who cast members will take part as well, including Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim. The official synopsis for the series reads: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.” The Sea Devils made their first appearance in 1972 alongside the Silurians, and while the Silurians were reintroduced to the series in 2010, the Sea Devils didn’t return until 2022.

Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies wrote the spinoff with Pete McTighe. “There’s a race that lives beneath the oceans,” Davies said during the Comic-Con panel. “It’s war on an epic scale, and it’s got a tremendous cast… I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Who universe to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.

The Doctor Who spinoff will start shooting next month. It doesn’t have a premiere date just yet, but it will stream exclusively on Disney+ in North America and international markets, and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.

As for the main show, the first season featuring Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) as the Fifteenth Doctor wrapped up next month, but he’ll be returning for a Doctor Who Christmas Special later this year, which will be followed by a new season in 2025. A sneak peek at the new special was also revealed at Comic-Con, which features Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan.
