Transformers One, panel, SDCC, Comic-Con

Form up and roll out! Paramount Animation is turning the ignition key of San Diego Comic-Con 2024 for a Transformers One panel to start this year’s celebration of superheroes, comic books, film, television, and more! The annual event returns to form after years of COVID-19 cancelations, Hollywood strikes, and major studios bowing out of the show in the final hours. I would say fans are in for a breath of fresh air, but if you’ve ever been to San Diego Comic-Con, you know that’s a false promise. Remember to wear your deodorant, friends. It will be a packed show, and the gradual heat death of California won’t do anyone any favors.

Transformers One is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once, they were friends who bonded like brothers and forever changed the fate of Cybertron. In the first-ever fully CG-animated Transformers movie, Transformers One features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, with Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm.

Paramount’s Transformers One panel began with a sizzle reel establishing the feud between Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry), using footage from other movies. Transformers One shows how the duo went from being friends to sworn enemies, and the animated film follows the same chronology as the other movie.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke at the show, saying, “If we were to do this live-action, it would cost $500 million. In the movies, it costs a fortune to animate them speaking; in animation, they don’t have to worry about that, so you’ll get to know them in a way you never did in the movies or cartoons.”

Josh Cooley, who directs Transformers One, addressed the crowd, saying Transformers made him want to be an animator. He was fascinated by how Optimus Prime and Megatron became enemies. Cooley’s emotional connection to the Transformers property reminds him of his brother. Cooley became a director; his brother became a homicide detective. He liked exploring how brothers can go in wildly different directions.

Next, Paramount shared footage of the film, beginning with a race, like an Olympics on Megatron called the Icon 500. Optimus Prime and Megatron watch as Sentinel Prime enters. The purpose of this scene is to show how things look when things are good on Cybertron, not only when things are bad (as we’ve seen in the other films). Optimus and Megatron throw on jet packs and join in the race uninvited, with Optimus saying, “We need to show them we’re more than meets the eye.” It’s worth noting the duo are minors and are unable to transform.

Next, Keegan-Michael Key leads the crowd in a sing-a-long for the Transformers theme. There are lyrics to that? When the song ended, Key said, “Oh, now we know who’s over 40 now!” Brian Tyree Henry said Ratchett is his favorite Transformer, and his parents only bought him villain toys, so he played with Megatron. He would often make him the hero during playtime.

Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth says the nostalgia around Transformers and the cartoons made him want to do the movie. He enjoys the lessons and the escapism. Transformers One is his first time participating in animation, so he’s excited to see how it turns out. Hemsworth and Henry joked that they spent months together sleeping in bunk beds to build their chemistry.

The delivery of voice work changes as the film continues. Early on, Hemsworth and Henry sound like friends, but as the movie goes on, they start to sound more like their counterparts in the live-action films, with Hemsworth and Henry modifying their performances. Henry got emotional on stage, telling the crowd, “It’s hard to lose a friendship, as it’s heartbreaking in a different way than losing a lover as you sign on for something different. It’s more haunting in some ways.” Henry says he still thinks about the friends he lost every day.

Hemsworth also spoke about the great Peter Cullen, saying, “What Cullen has done is inspiring and terrifying.” As an actor, Hemsworth says he never sought to make an impression, as he’s playing a much younger, brash version of the character. If they had done the film with the characters as we know them now, he wouldn’t have done it as he would have been mimicking Cullen. He didn’t want to do that.

In another clip, a generation of Transformers were built without the cog in their chest that allows them to transform. In the film, Optimus, Megatron, Alita, and Bumblebee don’t have cogs, but they acquire them as the film goes on.

Transformers One will hit theaters on September 20th.

Judy Greer

Yesterday, we learned that production has begun on an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman), with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red SparrowSlumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now Deadline has broken the news that the cast of the film includes Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, who just recently finished working on another King adaptation called The Life of Chuck, and Judy Greer of the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises. Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed. Having read the source material, The Major and the mom of the lead character are the first possibilities that come to my mind.

Hamill and Greer join previously announced cast members Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Garrett Wareing (Ransom Canyon), Tut Nyuot (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Charlie Plummer (National Anthem), Ben Wang (American Born Chinese), Jordan Gonzalez (Pretty Little Liars: Summer School), Joshua Odjick (Welcome to Derry), and Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit).

An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter last year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life.

Strange Darling writer JT Mollner has written the screenplay for the version of The Long Walk that’s being made. The novel is set in a future dystopian America ruled over by a militaristic dictator, and the titular event is an annual contest in which 100 teenagers must keep a steady pace of at least four miles an hour under strict rules until only one of them is left alive. The winner receives “The Prize”: anything they want for the rest of their life. The story follows Raymond Garraty, a 16-year-old from Pownal, Maine, as well as a group of other teenagers with good, bad, and mysterious intentions.

Lawrence is producing the film through his company about:blank, alongside Roy Lee, Cameron MacConomy, and Steven Schneider. Meredith Wieck and Erin Jones-Wesley are overseeing for Lionsgate. Filming is taking place in rural locations throughout the province of Manitoba, and will continue through the summer.

Fantastic Four

My Marvel Cinematic Universe dream is finally coming true! Ahead of Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Pedro Pascal is here to share the first cast photo of Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four! The image, pasted to Pascal’s Instagram, features Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm-Richards/Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), all gathered together.

Julia Garner stars in Fantastic Four as the Herald of Galactus, Silver Surfer, while Paul Walter Hauser assumes an undisclosed role. Some fans think Hauser plays Mole Man (the first villain to fight the Fantastic Four) in the upcoming film, but his part remains a mystery. Fantastic Four arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025, with WandaVision’s Matt Shakman directing from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer, with contributions from WandaVision’s Peter Cameron. That’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen, which worries me, but I’m holding out hope.

Other Fantastic Four cast members include Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Natasha Lyonne in a mysterious role (though some say she could play Ben Grimm’s beloved Alicia Masters), and John Malkovich in an undisclosed role.

Previously, Shakman teased that the movie will be unlike anything we’ve seen from Marvel so far. “It’s different in so many ways,” Shakman said. “I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before.”

My anticipation for the Fantastic Four is through the roof. They get a bad rap because of the previous films (and they’re not as flashy as some of Marvel’s other superhero teams, like the Avengers or X-Men), but they’re the ones who started it all. We’ll be in business if Fantastic Four arrives like Lost in Space meets Indiana Jones. Here’s hoping!

The 2024 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is set to run from Thursday, September 5th through Sunday, September 15th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada – and with the start of the festivities just a month and a half away, TIFF has announced this year’s Midnight Madness lineup! The Midnight Madness program is considered to be “the wild side” of the film festival, as it involves “screenings of the best in action, horror, shock and fantasy cinema.” As reported by Deadline, the 2024 Midnight Madness lineup consists of ten films and “features five world premieres, all of which will screen at Toronto’s historic — and allegedly haunted — Royal Alexandra Theatre.”

Midnight Madness will open with the North American premiere of Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. Revenge was also part of a TIFF Midnight Madness lineup, so this is a bit of a homecoming for Fargeat. Also returning from previous Midnight Madness events are Bodied director Joseph Kahn, who brings his film Ick to the lineup this year, and Headshot director Timo Tjahjanto, who returns with The Shadow Strays.

Here’s the official synopsis for The SubstanceIt generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each. A perfect balance. Easy. Right? If you respect the balance… what could possibly go wrong? Ick tells the following story: Science teacher Hank’s life changes when he reconnects with his first love and suspects a new student is his daughter, all while facing an alien threat in their town. And The Shadow Strays: Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin, is suspended due to a sloppy mission in Japan. She meets 11-year-old Monji, who loses his mother and sets out to rescue him.
