According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2024 NY Film Festival has now found its closing night title with Blitz, which comes from director Steve McQueen. McQueen directs, writes, and serves as a producer on the film, featuring stories of Londoners during the blitzkrieg of World War II. The historical drama stars Saoirse Ronan and Elliot Heffernan.
The story, according to THR, “is told from the parallel perspectives of working-class single mother Rita (Ronan) and her 9-year-old son George (Heffernan) as they become separated in the city under siege.” Blitz finds McQueen back at New Regency, who he partnered with for 2013’s 12 Years a Slave and 2018’s Widows, starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debbicki, Cynthia Erivo and Colin Farrell. McQueen produces through his Lammas Park studio, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films. Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer produce via New Regency. Blitz hails from Apple Original Films.
McQueen has stated, “It is with immense pride, gratitude, and fondness that I’m able to return to the New York Film Festival with Blitz. I’ve been lucky enough to have enjoyed a number of memorable experiences at the festival and with New York audiences, and I’m enormously grateful to have been invited back for closing night.”
Dennis Lim, the NYFF artistic director, adds, “Blitz is a vivid and visceral depiction of life during wartime, a meticulous historical account that resonates unmistakably with our current age of endless war. We are thrilled to welcome back to the festival Steve McQueen, one of the most daring artists at work today, with one of the greatest achievements of his career.”
The film is set to have its North American premiere on October 10 at Alice Tully Hall. Meanwhile, the Apple film will hit theaters on November 1 ahead of its release on Apple TV+ on November 22.
Earlier this year, we learned that Zac Efron (The Iron Claw) is set to star in the thriller Famous for director Jody Hill (Observe and Report) – and will be playing dual roles in the film, which is based on a novel by Blake Crouch! Now Deadline has revealed that A24 has landed domestic distribution rights to the film. A24 has also informed Variety that they’re making a horror film called Altar, with Egor Abramenko (Sputnik) on board to direct the film, which will star Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Lily Collias (Good One), newcomer Hudson Behling, January Jones (Mad Men), and David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer).
Scripted by Chad Hodge, who created the short-lived, Blake Crouch-inspired TV series Wayward Pines back in 2015, Famous has the following synopsis: Lance Dunkquist has one asset that’s about to change his life – he has the face of a movie star. And not just any movie star – Lance is the spitting image of a Hollywood icon, James Jansen. Lance is about to travel to Los Angeles to make his dream come true. Lance is going to be famous, no matter what it takes… The film aims to be a “provocative and highly entertaining Los Angeles-set thriller that explores the dark side of celebrity, and the lengths people will go to attain it.” Efron will be playing both overzealous fan Lance Dunkquist and Hollywood heartthrob James Jansen.
Mr. Robot creator / Leave the World Behind director Sam Esmail is producing Famous with Chad Hamilton for Esmail Corp. The company’s Nick Krishnamurthy serves as executive producer. Black Bear will be presenting Famous to potential international distributors at the upcoming European Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and WME Independent represent the U.S. rights.
Written by Will Soodik (Westworld) and based on a short story by Philip Fracassi, Altar is said to be a horror film that follows the summer of a young boy, forced to grow up faster than he ever imagined.
A24 is working with Chernin Entertainment on that one and will be handling the global distribution.

According to Deadline, Apple has just acquired a new sci-fi after arising as the victor in a bidding war. The new sci-fi film in question is The Corsair Code, which will be adapted by Jonathan Topper from his own short story. Chris Hemsworth has also been attached as the star of the film. Topper had brought the project to Hemsworth and his producing partner Ben Grayson. Both Hemsworth and Grayson will be producing the film through their company, Wild State, while Apple is the studio that backs it.
The plot is currently being kept under wraps. However, it is being described as “a high-octane, sci-fi mystery adventure.” Topper is no stranger to TV as he already has collaborated with Apple on the series Your Friends and Neighbors as the creator and showrunner. That show is currently in production with Jon Hamm starring in the series and also taking on executive producing duties. Topper will also be penning the long-developed Star Wars film that is to be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy. Levy previously worked with Topper on the Netflix film The Adam Project, which also starred Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.
As for Hemsworth, stay tuned for him in some Transformers news today as the property is set to unveil some details at Comic-Con, as well as a new trailer for Transformers One. Hemsworth recently explained what drew him to the project for which he provides his voice. He stated, “This being an origin story is what appealed to me. It isn’t a remake; it’s not a reimagining. It shows the early years of these characters, whom we only knew later in their lives. This film delves into friendships and relationships you have with people when you’re vulnerable and afraid. It talks about what bravery really means and how good and evil aren’t as simplistic as they might first appear. We make mistakes, and we learn from them. But ultimately, we are defined by the decisions that we make.“
Hemsworth continued: “What I like about this version of Optimus Prime is there’s a brashness and recklessness to him that needs to be tempered. He’s exposed to things that make him question everything he believes in.” The actor also touched upon the longevity of the franchise and why fans continue to love the story. “I think what we connect to through all great storytelling, whether it be comic books, film, even Shakespeare, is that there’s a mythology to it,” Hemsworth said. “And there’s allegory and hidden messaging in there, too. It’s baked into the story. When I was watching Transformers as a kid, there were moral questions posed—right and wrong, good and evil, cause and effect. Your choices have consequences. And I think there’s a nobility to Optimus Prime that kids look up to.“

Back in February of 2020, which was two months before author Grady Hendrix’s novel The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires (pick up a copy HERE) was even published, it was announced that a PKM Productions, which had a deal with Amazon Studios, had secured the adaptation rights. But apparently PKM Productions just couldn’t get The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires off the ground at Amazon, so now Deadline reports that the project has moved over to HBO, where a series adaptation of Hendrix’s novel is being developed by Rough House Pictures. Hendrix is writing the adaptation with The Righteous Gemstones duo Danny McBride and Edi Patterson. Best known for his work in comedy, McBride previously earned horror writing credits on Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends, and The Exorcist: Believer.
Hendrix, McBride, and Patterson are executive producing the show with Brandon James. Quirk Books, which published the novel, also receives an executive producing credit.
Described as “Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula,” The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is set in 1990s Charleston, South Carolina and tells the following story: Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to kiss her good-bye in the morning, her kids are wrapped up in their own lives, and she’s always a step behind on thank-you notes and endless chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and suspenseful fiction. This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor’s handsome relative, James Harris, into her life. Sensitive and well-read, James makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in twenty years. But there’s something… off… and then Patricia’s senile mother-in-law insists she knew him back when she was a girl. When local children go missing, Patricia has reason to believe that James may be more Bundy than Beatnik. But once she and the book club members investigate further, the true monster emerges — and he’s far more terrifying than any serial killer they’ve ever read about.
