Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

Back on Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Robert Barsamian of Horror Inc., production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. That show was on track to start filming this summer… in fact, it was supposed to go into production yesterday, July 22nd… but then, a couple months ago, we learned that Fuller was booted from the project because A24 wanted to go in a “different direction.” So it’s going to be a while longer before we see Crystal Lake – but back in May, Horror Inc. announced they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will consist of “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024 via @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” Since then, we’ve seen Jason Voorhees join the free video game MultiVersus, and now IGN has broken the news that Horror Inc. is bringing exclusive Friday the 13th merchandise to San Diego Comic-Con as part of the Jason Universe endeavor.

San Diego Comic-Con is scheduled to be held from Thursday, Jul 25th through Sunday, Jul 28th… and attendees who make their way to the StylinOnline Tower of T-Shirts booths (#415 and #5029) will find limited quantities of two Jason Universe shirts and one pin. The pin is free, while the shorts will be going for the price of $27.99 each. Images of these items can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Robert Barsamian, President of Horror Inc., provided the following statement: “For decades, Jason shocked and thrilled audiences who kept coming back for more. We’re excited to work with Victor Miller and Marc Toberoff on new projects we’ll announce in the coming months.

Will you be attending San Diego Comic-Con, and will you be picking up this Friday the 13th / Jason Universe merch while you’re there? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Deadpool & Wolverine, box office

The first reactions to Deadpool & Wolverine are raining like men online, with many lucky viewers praising the MCU’s latest superhero celebration as an excellent “reset” for the beloved cinematic universe. As the good word spreads, analysts crunch numbers to predict the film’s opening gambit, with the consensus landing Wade Wilson and Logan Howlett’s cameo-crammed bromance at an expected $360M for its global opening. The box office prediction for Deadpool & Wolverine is far from Marvel’s lowest opening ever, with The Marvels at $46.1 million in domestic earnings and a global launch of $110M.

Analysts peg (heh) Deadpool & Wolverine for a domestic total of $160M to $170M for its domestic opening, crowning the threequel as one of the most lucrative R-rated openings ever. If those numbers come to pass, Deadpool & Wolverine could carve Deadpool’s $132.4M launch to ribbons. Concerning worldwide totals, Marvel is looking at $340M to $360M off an offshore start of $180M-$190M.

Hold up! What about that domestic $200M launch prediction from a few weeks ago? It could still happen, as walk-up tickets are bound to sell, and let’s face it, it’s still hot as Hell outside, with temperatures hitting alarming highs this week in some parts of the world. Audiences will want to beat the heat alongside Wade and Logan as they galavant through the Marvel Universe to save the people of Deadpool’s world from extinction. Additionally, Ryan Reynolds says the latest Deadpool movie is “arguably not as violent as previous chapters,” meaning parents could feel more comfortable bringing kids to the R-rated romp.

Hopefully, with advanced ticket sales selling like hotcakes, with totals reaching $35 million last Friday, Deadpool & Wolverine marks a sea change for the future of the MCU box office.

Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Wade Wilson and James Howlett, respectively. In addition to featuring the superhero team-up of the century, the threequel finds Wade and Logan sticking their dirty fingers into the Marvel Cinematic timeline, creating chaos while foiling a nefarious plot devised by Charles Xavier’s sister, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). The MCU desperately needs a shake-up, and it sounds like Cassandra Nova and multiversal shenanigans could usher significant changes into the interconnected universe.

Deadpool & Wolverine also stars Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Rob Delaney as Peter.

Do you plan to see Deadpool & Wolverine this weekend? How much money will the movie make during its opening weekend? Let us know in the comments section below. Here’s hoping the box office total for Deadpool & Wolverine blows expectations out of the water! LFG!

Two years have gone by since we heard that production had wrapped on Cuckoo, a new horror film from writer/director Tilman Singer that stars Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Tatort). Now our chance to see the film is almost upon us, as it’s set to reach theatres on August 9th – and with that date just a couple of weeks away, a new trailer has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.

Here’s the official synopsis: Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.

A while back, Variety revealed that the film sees Schafer face off against a mysterious bird-like monster with a scream-like call who seeks to impregnate women with her evil spawn. The story, written by Singer, is based off the lore of the cuckoo bird, some of which are brood parasites, meaning they lay their eggs in the nests of other species.

A press release notes that Dan Stevens turns in a “brilliant and terrifying” performance in the film, and he has described his role as a “delicious antagonist role.”

At one point, it was announced that Gemma Chan (Eternals), Sofia Boutella (The Mummy 2017), Zita Hanrot (Love, Death & Robots), Proschat Madani (Walking on Sunshine), and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich) would be in the movie as well, but it looks like most of them had to drop out of the project before filming began.

This is the second feature for Singer, following the 2018 supernatural horror film Luz, which Bluthardt had a role in. Luz told the story of “a young cab driver fleeing from the grasp of a possessed woman, whose confession could endanger the lives of everyone who crosses her path.” Several of Singer’s Luz collaborators joined him on Cuckoo. In addition to Bluthardt, also returning from Luz were cinematographer Paul Faltz, composer Simon Waskow, and production designer Dario Mendez Acosta.

Cuckoo was financed by Neon. The film is being produced by Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, Thor Bradwell, Ben Rimmer, in a cooperation between Germany’s Fiction Park and the States’ Waypoint Entertainment. It’s executive produced by Tom Quinn, Jeff Deutchman, Emily Thomas, and Ryan Friscia for Neon. Additional funding came from the Film und Medien Stiftung NRW, HessenFilm, and the German Federal Film Fund.

PLOT: After a series of strange events leads her to question her family’s isolated life on a fortified compound deep in the English wilds, 10-year-old Willow follows her parents on one of their secret late-night treks to the forest’s heart.

REVIEW: There’s something about a werewolf movie that always intrigues me. They often serve as a parallel to a darker side of humanity, using a physical beast to represent more abstract concepts. The Beast Within is no different, focusing on an isolated family in the English countryside. They have a dark secret, and it’s taking a toll on all of the family members. The obvious parallel is that of alcoholism, with the father turning into a monster at night and the mother doing what she can to contain the beast. The mother’s excuses are likely heard at AA meetings around the world. But does this multi-faceted narrative provide a satisfying film?

The short answer is yes, this has some great moments and is really propped up by its wonderful performances. I was blown away by Caoillinn Springall in this year’s Stopmotion, and she’s continuing to impress here. She stars as Willow, a young girl with breathing problems who must keep an oxygen tank. She sits and awaits her mother’s return, overtaken by the mystery of her family. Her curiosity can be a bit frustrating since we, as the viewer, are privy to information that she isn’t. Ashleigh Cummings brings so much to the role of the mother, Imogen. She seems absolutely broken by the circumstances and is just doing what she thinks is best for her family.

Kit Harrington and Caoilinn Springall in The Beast Within (2024).

Kit Harington is absolutely terrifying as Noah. I feel like people have been waiting for him to have that next defining role post-Game of Thrones. And while I’m not sure how much reach the film will have, this is a part that allows him to flex his acting muscles. He’s able to walk that line between abusive and nurturing father, which makes him absolutely terrifying. I wanted more of him just to see that line constantly being bandied back and forth. We also get a mini GOT reunion as James Cosmo appears as Imogen’s father, Waylon. His interactions with Kit are minimal, so don’t expect any John Snow vs Jeor Mormont moments.

The Beast Within really takes advantage of its English countryside setting, allowing the forest to become a character all its own. There are some frustrating character decisions that are clearly just done for sake of plot advancement but those things don’t really bug me. Willow is clearly a hardheaded girl, intent on learning the truth, it’s a core tenant of her personality. So, it’s not shocking to see her do things that may be frustrating.

Caoilinn Springall in The Beast Within (2024).

The Beast Within doesn’t really satisfy with its big conclusion, where we get more of a look at the werewolf. As smart as the filmmakers were to hide the beast for most of the film, it doesn’t entirely impress the more it’s on screen. The flashes work well, but the more focus there is, the sillier it looks. There’s a shot of the beast on fire, which is a bit unintentionally funny and the last thing anyone wants from their big finale. Conversely, you think of something like The First Omen, which is very strategic about the CGI used in its finale. I wish the same mindset was used here. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with The Beast Within. I have always loved more character-focused films, and everyone here is fascinating. It’s hard to ignore the alcoholism parallels, and I think the film is better for that. While the final act lost me a little, and the twist is seen from a mile away, this is definitely a werewolf film worth experiencing yourself.

THE BEAST WITHIN IS CURRENTLY PLAYING AT THE FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL AND WILL BE RELEASED ON JULY 26TH, 2024.

Back during the pandemic, Prime Video acquired the rights to STX Films’ action-comedy My Spy, starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman. The comedy paired the Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star with a preteen co-star for a comedy with action elements. Four years later, the pair reunited with co-stars Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong for a sequel that flips the comedy with the action for an improved follow-up that is superior to the first.

In My Spy The Eternal City, we revisit JJ (Dave Bautista) and Sophie (Chloe Coleman) four years after the first movie. Now that Sophie is a teenager, she and JJ have a different relationship that is fraught with challenges. When Sophie’s choir is allowed to perform in Italy, JJ signs up as a chaperone. While abroad, JJ’s boss David Kim (Ken Jeong) pulls him into the search for an international terrorist that could threaten the world. JJ and Sophie must use their spy skills to save the world and maybe help their own dynamic along the way.

I chatted with the stars of My Spy The Eternal City about the sequel and what it was like filming in Venice and Rome. I asked Ken Jeong about getting to do more fieldwork, and Chloe Coleman discussed what it was like doing more stunts this time around. Dave Bautista talked about why My Spy The Eternal City was harder work than Dune. Flula Borg talked about portraying a badass who could hold his own opposite Dave Bautista, while Anna Faris talked about playing a character unlike any other in her career. Check out the full interviews in the embed above.
