Billy Crystal Before

I was just thinking the other day (while watching When Harry Met Sally…) that we don’t see Billy Crystal in movies or TV shows nearly enough these days, so it’s great to see that Apple TV+ has just unveiled a batch of first look images from their upcoming psychological thriller series Before, which stars and is executive produced by the legendary “multi-award winning actor, comedian, and filmmaker” Billy Crystal! The images can be viewed in this article.

Described as “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” and a “supernatural mystery series,” Before sees Crystal taking on the role of Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn, encounters a troubled young boy, Noah, who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past. As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens.

Crystal is joined in the cast by multi-Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light (Transparent), Jacobi Jupe (Peter Pan & Wendy), Oscar Award nominee Rosie Perez (The Flight Attendant), Tony Award-nominee Maria Dizzia (Orange Is the New Black), and Ava Lalezarzadeh (In the Garden of Tulips). Light plays Lynn, with Jupe as Noah.

Coming our way from Paramount Television Studios, Before is a limited series consisting of ten episodes. The show was created by Sarah Thorp (The Bounty Hunter), who serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. As mentioned, Crystal is also an executive producer on the series, as are Eric Roth (Killers of the Flower Moon), pilot director Adam Bernstein (Silo) and producing director Jet Wilkinson (Truth Be Told).

Before is set to premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, October 25 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through December 20.

I grew up watching Billy Crystal in the likes of When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Throw Momma from the Train, City Slickers, and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly’s Gold, among other things, so I’m very interested to watch him in a thriller series.

Are you a Billy Crystal fan, and will you be tuning in to Before to watch him take the lead in a psychological thriller series? Let us know by leaving a comment below – and check out these images while you’re scrolling down:

Joel Kinnaman would recently star in John Woo‘s film Silent Night, which emphasized action over dialogue. Now, Kinnaman stars in another somewhat similar auditory-theme action film titled The Silent Hour. Here, Kinnaman’s character suffers a gradual loss of hearing due to an on-the-job incident while trying to catch a criminal. Mekhi Phifer leads a group of bad guys dead set on collecting evidence from a deaf witness. And the action explodes as our hearing-impaired protagonists try to escape the impending danger. Paramount has just released the trailer. The Silent Hour hits theaters and digital on OCTOBER 11.

The official synopsis reads,
“Boston Detective Frank Shaw (Joel Kinnaman) returns to duty after a career-altering injury leaves him with permanent hearing loss. Tasked with interpreting for Ava Fremont (Sandra Mae Frank), a deaf witness to a brutal gang murder, they find themselves cornered in a soon-to-be-condemned apartment building when the killers return to eliminate her. Cut off from the outside world, these two strangers must lean on each other to outsmart killers they can’t hear coming for their only hope of making it out alive.”

The cast for the film includes Joel Kinnaman, Sandra Mae Frank, Mekhi Phifer and Mark Strong. Session 9 director Brad Anderson helms the film from a screenplay written by Dan Hall. Executive producers include Stuart Ford, Miguel A. Palos Jr., Michael Ewing, Aaron Barnett, Blair Ward, Anders Erdén and the director Brad Anderson.

the rundown, 4k

Flashback to a time when Dwayne Johnson was still crossing over from the WWE to major Hollywood films. He was still being billed as “The Rock.” His physique was more muscular than monstrous. Fans and general audiences were finding out that his charismatic mic skills could transfer to fun, charismatic characters on screen. Johnson only had a couple of prior credits with The Mummy Returns and the spin-off The Scorpion King before he made the action comedy The Rundown from director Peter Berg.

2003’s The Rundown was Johnson’s sophomore starring effort and it would lay the groundwork for one of the biggest names in blockbuster movies for a number of years. Now, Kino Lorber will be releasing a new 4K Blu-ray of the film, which co-stars Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Walken and Ewen Bremner. This new physical media release is expected to hit retailers sometime later this year.

The description from Blu-ray.com reads,
“Beck (The Rock) is a tight-lipped bounty hunter who doesn’t like to use a gun and accepts any job without asking questions. When Beck’s employer, Walker (William Lucking), sends him to the Amazon to locate Walker’s cocky son, Travis (Seann William Scott), Beck discovers a population controlled by a tyrannical treasure hunter (Christopher Walken). To survive, Beck and Travis must work together, without their affections for a mysterious rebel (Rosario Dawson) getting in the way.”

So far, there haven’t been details disclosed by way of special features. However, the specs of the new 4K release are detailed below:

What Do We Know About the second season of Severance? More thank you may think. The AppleTV+ psychological thriller series debuted back in 2022, and fans have been clamoring for the next chapter ever since. With casting announcements, plot twists from the first season, a teaser trailer, and more, we know a lot about what is to come. So, let’s jump in and discuss

Season Two will bring back the main cast

We are assuming that season two will pick up directly where the first concluded, which means Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette will reprise their roles. With multiple twists and reveals left at the conclusion of the first season, there is more than enough for all of these characters to explore. Expect expanded roles for Dichen Lachman after the season one finale reveal as well, while we may see the same or less of Christopher Walken.

Gwendoline Christie first look as multiple new faces have joined the cast

In the first teaser for season two, we got a glimpse of Game of Thrones veteran Gwendoline Christie as a new character. While her exact role has yet to be revealed, Christie is one of many newcomers to Severance. Season two will introduce Bob Balaban (Best in Show), Merritt Wever (The Walking Dead), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and John Noble (The Lord of the Rings). None of these roles have been announced as of yet, so stay tuned to find out who everyone is playing.

Season 2 will be one episode longer than the first

Production on Severance’s first season began on November 8, 2020, while still under COVID-19 restrictions and concluded six months later. With the second season renewal being announced just two days before the season one finale aired, expectations of expanding the length of the season seemed to be an easy decision. With the actor and writer strikes wreaking havoc with productions in 2023, Severance had to make adjustments along the way. It is unknown if we would have gotten more than ten episodes or if that was always the plan, but the extension of the season bodes well for the creative freedom given to showrunner Dan Erickson and his team of writers.

Ben Stiller directed half of the episodes

Ben Stiller directs five episodes after helming six of the first season. Stiller was originally only going to direct the pilot but added more as development progressed. Uta Briesewitz, Sam Donovan, and Jessica Lee Gagné also serve as directors. First-season director Aoife McArdle did not return for season two. The season was written by showrunner Dan Erickson, returning scribe Anna Ouyang Moench, and new writers Mohamad El Masri, Erin Wagoner, and Wei-Ning Yu joined the crew. While we will learn more about the creative team behind the second season, expect the same eerie and surreal visuals, compelling score, and top-notch production design as we saw in season one.

The plot will deepen the mystery of Lumon Industries

A quick recap: Severance follows the employees of Lumon Industries, a biotech company founded by Kier Eagan, a mysterious figure treated with an almost godlike following. Lumon invented a process called severance, which erases workers’ memories while they are at work, allowing a full distinction between their home and professional identities. Adam Scott plays Mark Scout, a former history professor who is grieving his wife, who is a manager of a team at Lumon. When newcomer Helly Riggs (Britt Lower) arrives, Mark’s professional demeanor shifts as he and his coworkers investigate what is happening at Lumon. The first season saw Irving (John Turturro), a stickler for the rules, begin a romance with Burt (Christopher Walken) while Dylan (Zach Cherry), who loves company perks, loses his faith in his job. Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette), manager of the team, plays double duty at work and outside as she surveils Mark’s activities. In the finale, we learn Mark’s wife is alive, that Helly is a member of the Lumon-owning Eagan clan, and that there may be more than we know about what severance is for. Expect all of these threads to continue into season two.

Season Two premiere January 2025

The first teaser for the second season was released on July 10th. It clocks in at less than two minutes but reveals quick-cut looks at Lumon employees and their different personalities at work and at home. Aside from a look at Gwendoline Christie’s reveal, we do not have any concrete details besides the confirmation that the long-awaited season will hit AppleTV+ on January 17, 2025.
