As Twisters churns and thrashes its way into theaters, one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, is paying tribute to the late actor Bill Paxton, who helped make the first film a classic. Paxton starred alongside Helen Hunt in Jan de Bont’s 1996 action blockbuster as Bill Harding, an accomplished storm chaser on the verge of changing the way extreme weather patterns. Despite not getting along on set, Paxton and Hunt’s chemistry in Twister is electric, and the film would only be nearly as memorable with Paxton’s energy, bravery, and entertaining approach to the material. In a post on social media, Powell remembered the late Paxton, whom he worked with on the 2013 film Red Wing.

“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell shared on Twitter. “A great friend of mine who saw poetry in the natural world. His boots are impossible to fill, but this life is all about chasing the greats.”

Twisters is off to a great start at the box office after whipping up $10M in previews. Some analysts think Twisters could spin up close to $40 million during its opening weekend, but others at BoxOfficeMojo say it could carve a path toward $60-75 million.

The official synopsis for Twisters reads:

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights), to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew; the more dangerous, the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed. Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Twisters features an exciting new cast, including Nope’s Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane (American Honey), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (Atypical), and Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy). From Amblin Entertainment, Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and is produced by Oscar nominee Frank Marshall (Jurassic and Indiana Jones franchises) and by Patrick Crowley (Jurassic and Bourne franchises). The screenplay is by Mark L. Smith, writer of the Best Picture nominee The Revenant.

Time Bandits

Back in 1981, director Terry Gilliam and his Monty Python cohort Michael Palin brought the world the cult classic fantasy adventure film Time Bandits – and now, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has teamed with his frequent collaborators Jemaine Clement (Flight of the ConchordsWhat We Do in the Shadows) and Iain Morris (The InbetweenersNext Goal Wins) to create an Apple TV+ series version of Time Bandits. The first two episodes of the ten-episode first season will premiere on Wednesday, July 24th… and while doing the press rounds for the show, Clement revealed that season 2 is already being written!

Produced for Apple TV+ by Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content’s AC Studios, and MRC, Time Bandits is an unpredictable journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin. Together, they set out on a thrilling quest to save the boy’s parents — and the world. The eccentric crew of bandits embark on epic adventures while evil forces threaten their conquests, and life as they know it. As the group transports through time and space, the gang stumbles upon fascinating worlds of the distant past while seeking out treasure, depending on Kevin to shed light on each situation. The “Time Bandits” witness the creation of Stonehenge, see the Trojan Horse in action, escape dinosaurs in the prehistoric ages, wreak havoc during medieval times, experience the Ice Age, ancient civilizations and the Harlem Renaissance, and much more along the way.

The cast of the series includes Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Kal-El Tuck (Unseeing Evil), Tadhg Murphy (Conversations With Friends), Roger Jean Nsengiyumva (You Don’t Know Me), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Rachel House (Heartbreak High), Kiera Thompson (Martyrs Lane), James Dryden (Ready Player One), Felicity Ward (The Office Australia), Francesca Mills (Harlots), and Imaan Hadchiti (Thor: Love and Thunder), with special guest appearances by Waititi and Clement.

Waititi, Clement, and Morris executive produce, write, and direct select episodes, with Clement and Morris serving as co-showrunners. Garrett Basch, Tim Coddington, and Handmade Films’ Jane Stanton also serve as executive producers.

While speaking to ComicBook.com, Clement and Waititi were asked if a second season has been discussed yet and if there’s a historical time period they didn’t get a chance to visit in the first batch of episodes that might make it into season 2. Clement answered, “We are actually writing a second season, but it depends on if people watch the first season. If no one watches it, we throw it away in a bin. But I cannot tell you because I don’t want to spoil the second season.

The two episode premiere of the show will be followed by two new episodes every Wednesday through August 21st.

Morbius, Madame Web, Daniel Espinosa

Morbius director Daniel Espinosa is more than aware of the reception to his Marvel film, starring Jared Leto as the Living Vampire. He says the project turned out poorly due to Hollywood red tape, COVID-19, and too many cooks in the kitchen. The backlash to Morbius left Espinosa with a cloud of negative emotions as disappointment replaced excitement for the Spider-Man spinoff. “Yes. To make a movie through committee, I think, is very hard, and I felt in the end that maybe a different director would have been a better fit.”

Daniel Espinosa says his initial vision for Morbius differs from what fans experienced in theaters, and making the film was a battle of opinions.

“I’m known amongst the studios to be a person with a lot of opinions, and maybe they were not looking for that kind of director,” Espinosa told Deadline.

Daniel Espinosa’s comments about Morbius being made “through committee” harken back to Dakota Johnson’s thoughts on the epic failure of Sony‘s Madame Web, a movie I don’t know I’ll ever recover from. When Madame Web took the internet by storm with negative opinions swirling like a tornado of aggrieved Marvel fans, Johnson responded to the outcry by saying, “It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made – and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out – decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee.”

“Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them,” Johnson continued. “But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.”

Unfortunately for Sony, Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, looks pretty grim. A red-band, hyper-violent trailer debuted in June 2023, and we’ve not heard a peep from the film since. Kraven stalks into theaters on December 12, so there’s still time to crank up the PR machine, but yeah. There’s no conversation around the film, almost as if fans forgot it exists. Hopefully, Marvel will come out swinging when they ramp up promotions for Kraven, and I’ll be left eating my words. Sony’s extended Spider-Verse is brimming with potential. The studio needs to discover what works and capitalize on the momentum. My hopes are high for Sony’s Spider-Noir, which is shaping up to be a star-studded affair.

Director Christopher Bickel’s horror film Pater Noster and the Mission of Light is set to receive a release sometime this fall, and today we’ve gotten our hands on two different trailers for the movie! Our friends at Bloody Disgusting unveiled a trailer earlier today that was cut together by the director, and that one can be seen at the bottom of this article. In the embed above is another trailer, and this one was cut together by JoBlo’s own Mike Conway!

Pater Noster and the Mission of Light centers on Max, a young record store clerk who stumbles upon a rare vinyl LP and is drawn into the world of a 1970s hippie commune. An invitation to the remnants of the outlandish cult and their unholy spawn leads to grave and grisly circumstances for Max and her friends. A press release notes that this film is the brainchild of the adventurous underground director whose previously acclaimed works The Theta Girl (2017) and Bad Girls (2022) have sent shockwaves through the underground film community. With an acclaimed track record of unsettling and thought-provoking films, Bickel is poised to take audiences on a nightmarish lysergic hellride that will linger long after the credits roll.

Bickel was the writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and editor on the project, “an auteur out of financial necessity. We make underground films with very little money for the love of the art. This is literally my back yard we’re shooting in. Everything we do is like the Little Rascals putting on a show for the neighborhood kids. That’s not to say that we don’t take great pains to make our products the best possible quality with the resources we have. Everything I know about filmmaking, I learned from punk rock. The movies we make are punk rock demo tapes. We operate outside of Hollywood focus groups and traditional distribution routes.

He describes the movies themselves as punk rock demo tapes, but Pater Noster and the Mission of Light also has a tie-in album, as an entire album’s worth of songs were written and recorded for the film “to play the part of the Cult’s immersive psychedelic head-music.” That music will be released as a double LP record set, and also as a 5.1 surround audio disc accompanying the Blu-ray release of the film. It’s worth noting that the album features sax work by Tim Cappello from The Lost Boys, who also happens to star in the film. It also includes remixes by Andrew Liles of Nurse With Wound.

Predator Versus Black Panther

When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the Disney-owned Marvel Comics gained the ability to make comic books based on the Predator franchise. They started releasing Predator comics in 2022, and in 2023 they brought us a four-issue limited series crossover between the Predator and one of their most popular characters, Wolverine. Now the Predator is set to go up against another popular Marvel superhero, as the first issue of the four-issue limited series Predator Versus Black Panther is scheduled to reach store shelves on August 21st! A cover can be seen below, courtesy of Marvel, along with some sample pages from SuperHeroHype.

Coming our way from writer Benjamin Percy, who also wrote Predator vs. Wolverine, and artist Chris Allen (with Ken Lashley creating the cover art), the first issue of Predator Versus Black Panther has the following synopsis: WAKANDA…IS PREY? You saw the Marvel Universe’s most tenacious mutant go up against one of the greatest killing machines in history in PREDATOR VS. WOLVERINE – and survive. Now the planet Earth lives on in Predator lore…a planet full of the most exhilarating prey they could imagine! And the strongest weapons in the Multiverse are in their sights. When a young Predator with something to prove comes for Wakanda’s vibranium, the Black Panther faces an enemy whose resources rival those of his great nation. Who will prove stronger?

When asked how his versions of the Predators and Black Panther might differ from those seen in the movies, Percy told Gizmodo, “If you’re a comics nerd, I will feed you. If you’re a movie nerd, I will feed you too. And if you’ve never read or seen anything about Predator or Black Panther, you can get fed as well. I want these to be evergreen titles, and the best way to accomplish that is to honor legacy while not overly burdening the reader with continuity homework.” He also teased that the story features a Predator King, who “has two sons who are at war with one another. Vibranium might be the weapon that determines their claim.

These Marvel crossovers aren’t the first time the Predator has fought superheroes. Before Marvel got the comic rights, Predator was set up at Dark Horse Comics, and they used to team up with DC Comics for crossovers like Batman Versus Predator (which was so popular that it got two sequels), Superman vs. Predator, and JLA Versus Predator. Outside of the superhero realm, they even teamed up with Archie Comics for a couple Archie vs. Predator books. Predators have fought Judge Dredd and Tarzan before, too.

I haven’t read most of the Predator comics that are out there, but I loved the Batman Versus Predator books when I was a kid, and since I’ve always been more of a Marvel fan, I’m excited to see the Predator get the chance to go up against Marvel characters now. I will definitely be reading Predator Versus Black Panther.
