Modders of The Witcher 3 have only had official tools from developer CD Projekt Red for two months, but they’ve already made great use of them. One ambitious modder was able to recreate some of the first game’s map with the new tools only a day after they were released. More recently, a new mod has given the already…
Wu Assassins star Li Jun Li is swinging into Sony’s Spider-Noir, the live-action Spider-Man spinoff series starring Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir. The MGM+ and Prime Video series hails from executive producers/co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The series will star Nicolas Cage as an “aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Cage first voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Li Jun Li swings onto the show as a series regular, playing a singer at a high-end nightclub in Spider-Noir. She joins Cage and Lamorne Morris, who plays Robbie Robertson, a “dedicated journalist trying to make it with the odds stacked against him as a black professional in 1930s New York, he takes on riskier stories that no one else would touch in order to catch attention and a paycheck. He is willing to do whatever is necessary for his career.” Bill Nunn previously brought the character to life in live-action in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Brendan Gleeson is said to be playing a villainous role in the series.
In a statement earlier this year, Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said: “Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers. The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”
Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character. Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”
Li Jun Li stars in the upcoming horror mystery film Alma and the Wolf by director Michael Patrick Jann. Set on the Oregon coast, Alma and the Wolf tells the story of a troubled police officer, Ren Accord (Ethan Embry), who investigates a mysterious wolf attack. Matters escalate when his estranged son vanishes during the case.
Sony’s Spider-Noir is looking better by the day. The choice to present the character in live-action fascinates me, and I look forward to experiencing the show when it comes to Prime Video.

Heartbreak comes frequently for Friday the 13th fans. The franchise has had a rough ride over the last couple decades, getting bogged down in legal issues and creative false stars. We get a video game, then the rug is pulled out from under it when it’s just getting started. A movie almost happens, then gets scrapped just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The Crystal Lake TV show was just a couple months from filming, then the showrunner gets fired. But worse than all of that is the fact that we’re in a time when actors from our beloved films are passing away very often. Just last month, we lost Erich Anderson, who was in the cast of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Now Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin has broken the news that Whitney Rydbeck, who played the ill-fated paintball player Roy in his film, has passed away.
McLoughlin took to social media to write, “We lost not only a truly funny comedian and actor… but one of the most good hearted human beings I’ve ever known. God Bless You and Rest in Peace, Whitney Rydbeck. Our Loss is Heavens’ Gain.“
According to the birthdate listed online (March 13, 1945), Rydbeck was 79 years old. He had over 55 screen acting credits to his name, with his career stretching back to 1970. In addition to Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI, his credits include Sleeper, Love at First Bite, Rocky II, 1941, Battle Beyond the Stars, The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island, The Gambler: The Adventure Continues, Copacabana, and A Very Brady Sequel, as well as episodes of Scrubs, Party of Five, 7th Heaven, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Grace Under Fire, Murder She Wrote, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Simon & Simon, Highway to Heaven, Cagney & Lacey, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, M*A*S*H, Monster Squad, Far Out Space Nuts, Lassie, The Jimmy Stewart Show, and The Brady Bunch. He was the Whitney of the 1979 show Whitney and the Robot.
His IMDb trivia page notes that he was a member of the Richmond Shepard Mime Troupe in the late 1960s and the drama director at Pasadena City College as of January 2003.
Rydbeck didn’t have much screen time in Jason Lives, but he brought his character to life in a memorable, endearing way in those brief moments. I have watched that movie many times, and there are many more viewings of it in my future. Roy will always be fun to watch, but there will be a bittersweet element to those moments now, knowing that Rydbeck is no longer with us.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Whitney Rydbeck’s family, friends, and fans.
For someone who doesn’t care about Deadpool at all, I sure have been finding myself writing about him, his movies, and playing with his ass a bit more than I anticipated. It’s with that in mind that I come to deliver my latest missive: don’t watch the final trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine if you care at all about…

Oh, hi. Welcome to a totally normal weekend after a totally normal weekend where absolutely nothing troubling or strange happened whatsoever. There’s simply nothing that we’re turning to digital worlds to keep our minds off of. Why would you suggest a thing?

The Fantasia Film Festival is in full swing in Montreal, and it kicked off in high gear with the world premiere of Bookworm. The movie – which we loved (read our review here) – stars the great Elijah Wood as an illusionist who is summoned to New Zealand to care for his estranged daughter after her mother winds up in a coma. Soon, the girl, Mildred (played by the terrific Nell Fisher), convinces her father to accompany her into the New Zealand wilderness to track down a mythical panther, only for the two to deal with danger at every turn.
Wood attended the film’s red carpet premiere and was kind enough to chat with us a bit. The interview will be up next week, but Wood did give us an intriguing answer when we asked if he’d be willing to return to Middle Earth in Andy Serkis’s The Hunt for Gollum.
“It would be pretty incredible. I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be…jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome.”
Viggo Mortensen also recently said he’d be willing to return, depending on the script. It should be noted that Wood also has been a long-time supporter of genre cinema, with his company, SpectreVision, responsible for some of the coolest indie horror films in recent years, such as A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night and Mandy (they’re also behind Oz Perkins’s The Monkey). I told Elijah that another film he made, The Greasy Strangler, has taken up permanent residency in my nightmares ever since I caught it at Sundance some years back, to which he said:
“Oh, I LOVE The Greasy Strangler. You know, there’s actually a connection to this movie (Bookworm). Toby Harvard wrote The Greasy Strangler, and he’s the writer of this film, so there you go!”
While they may share the same writer, don’t expect the same gross-out vibe from the rather charming Bookworm when Vertical Entertainment releases it sometime in the next few months. Stay tuned for more from Elijah and Fantasia!
