Halo, cancelled

Master Chief’s fight has ended. Today, Paramount+ announced that it has cancelled Halo after just two seasons.

In a statement, a Paramount+ spokesperson said: “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.” However, the battle may not be entirely over as Amblin Television, Xbox, and 343 Industries are said to be shopping the series to other buyers.

We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success, and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future,” reads a statement from 343 Industries. “We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world.

The series stars Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, with the rest of the cast including Natascha McElhone, Jen Taylor, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Danny Sapani. The series received its fair share of criticism, with the frequent scenes of Master Chief without his helmet coming under fire, but the second season was seen as an improvement over the first.

Considering how long it took to get Halo off the ground, this cancellation is a shame. Years were spent developing a Halo movie before the decision to pivot to a TV series was made. After a few more years of development, Showtime gave the series an official order in 2018, only to have it jump over to Paramount+ a few years later. Halo was a big success upon its premiere, evening setting a record as the service’s most-watched series premiere globally in its first 24 hours.

How do you feel about Halo getting cancelled? Do you hope the series finds a new home?

Ralph Macchio, Jackie Chan, Karate Kid movie

Cobra Kai may be coming to an end, but we haven’t seen the last of Daniel LaRusso. Ralph Macchio has returned for a new Karate Kid movie, which also stars Jackie Chan, and the actor spoke with THR about getting to work with the martial arts legend.

Jackie Chan is a legend, just to have that opportunity was exciting. He was wonderful,” Macchio said. “Lot of heart, lot of soul and caring, I will say that about Jackie. He loves being on set and it was like his first day every day. I love seeing that at his age and time of his career because I like to try to bring that as well, but a great young cast on that one, and we’ll see where it goes.” Seeing those two on screen together will be something special.

The new Karate Kid movie, which wrapped production last month, blends the Cobra Kai universe and the reboot universe together. The film stars Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) as a young teenager from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts. During his journey of self-discovery, Wang’s character meets a disciplined martial arts master. Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles of Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso. Joshua Jackson (Fatal Attraction) and Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian) also appear in the movie, alongside Sadie Stanley (Cruel Summer) as the romantic lead. Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) directed the movie from a script by Rob Lieber (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day).

The first five episodes of the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai debuted on Netflix today. Part 2 will follow on November 15th, and Part 3 will conclude the series next year. Unfortunately, our own Alex Maidy struggled to get excited about these first episodes but admitted that it’s hard to judge the season without having seen two-thirds of it. “This is the first season where the opening chapters completely underwhelmed me,” Maidy wrote. “With too many red herrings and retreads of previous conflicts, Cobra Kai VI opens with a disappointing start to what should have been a slam-dunk wrap for this popular franchise. Maybe because a feature film is on the way, there is still hope for this story, but it feels more than ever before like Cobra Kai has run out of steam.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

The new Karate Kid movie will hit theaters on May 30, 2025.

24 movie, Kiefer Sutherland

Could Jack Bauer be destined to return on the big screen? 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment are in the early stages of developing a movie based on 24, the acclaimed action-drama TV series starring Kiefer Sutherland.

Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer teased the 24 movie (as well as a Backdraft reboot with Glenn Powell) while appearing on MSNBC’s Squawk Box last month. “Imagine has always played in that zone where there is that high probability chance that it will be successful in movie theaters,” Grazer said. “It’s great for us, because we’ve built, over 30 years, over 100 different products and brands, whether it’s ‘Backdraft,’ which I’m now going to do today with Glen Powell, or whether it’s ’24,’ a movie that we’re going to do in a very interesting way with Disney and Fox.

Grazer continued, “These formats of the late 90s, early 2000s have become very important because the streamers, or studios, are right now even more risk-averse. They like brands that are already established that people have a high level of awareness to, where you actually add a new twist, or really interesting casting, which is of course what we’re doing with ours.

Kiefer Sutherland starred in 24 as counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, with each season covering 24 consecutive hours in real-time. Audiences hadn’t seen anything quite like it at the time, and the series quickly became a huge success. 24 came to a close after eight seasons but returned several years later for 24: Live Another Day, a twelve-episode limited series. There was also 24: Legacy, a spinoff series that only lasted a single season, and Fox has also been trying to get a 24 revival off the ground for years.

Sutherland has previously expressed a desire to return to the franchise and and even offered a suggestion for how the story could continue. The last we saw of Bauer, he was being taken away by the Russians in exchange for the freedom of Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub). Sutherland teased that one possible revival could see a new team trying to free Jack. “Howard [Gordon] and I talk all the time and invariably it comes up,” Sutherland said. “The idea of him being brought back — I’m just spitballing — I think that’s an interesting idea. You introduce a new cast of people in their effort to get him out, and it lives on from that point. There’s a lot of ways to go about it.

As the 24 movie is still in the very early stages, there’s no word on whether Sutherland will return as Bauer, but I’m sure fans would love to see him back.
