Month: July 2024

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, the opening sequence of Pitch Black, the “Burn” scene from The Crow (which not only turns 30 this year, but is also getting a new adaptation), the farmhouse raid and ending chase sequences in High Tension, and the climactic moments in the 1989 creature feature comedy Little Monsters, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series by digging into the moment he considers to be the best scene in the 1978 shark thriller Jaws 2 (watch it HERE). Lance has chosen the scene where the shark gets a burn scar from a boat explosion, and you can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

Directed by Jeannot Szwarc from a screenplay by Carl Gottlieb and Howard Sackler, Jaws 2 has the following synopsis: Years after the shark attacks that left Amity Island reeling, Sheriff Martin Brody finds new trouble lurking in the waters. Mayor Vaughn wants to rid the beach town of the stain on its reputation. But the disappearance of a pair of divers suggests that all is not right. When Sheriff Brody voices his warnings about holding a sailing competition, everyone thinks it’s post-traumatic stress. That is, until a shark fin cuts through the water.

The film stars Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, Joseph Mascolo, Jeffrey Kramer, Collin Wilcox, Ann Dusenberry, Mark Gruner, Susan French, Barry Coe, Gary Springer, Donna Wilkes, Gary Dubin, John Dukakis, G. Thomas Dunlop, David Elliott, Marc Gilpin, Keith Gordon, Cynthia Grover, Ben Marley, Martha Swatek, Billy Van Zandt, Gigi Vorgan, Fritzi Jane Courtney, Al Wilde, Cyprian R. Dube, Jerry M. Baxter, Jean Coulter, Christine Freeman, Herb Muller, David Owsley, and Susan Owsley McMillan.

Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and last month, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she will be making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. Now Deadline is reporting that Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face the Music), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story), Nina West (Rupaul’s Drag Race), Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Becca Blackwell (Bros), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), Dominique Jackson (Pose), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), and Eve Lindley (Bros) have all been cast in the film.

Romero provided the following statement: “This is the cast of my wildest dreams. In a movie about survival, you gotta love and root for the survival crew. Every single person in this ensemble brings such a special and specific flavor -both on and off screen. The result is truly a magic sauce.

Romero previously told Fangoria that the screenplay she wrote with novelist and comedian Erin Judge “takes place over one night, at the beginning of the dead rising. We find ourselves at a big warehouse party in Bushwick. We’ve got a party promoter for whom everything’s going wrong, and her lead act has dropped out, so she needs to call upon a friend — a retired drag queen — to resurrect his drag, to come and save the night. And it turns out to be a night of many resurrections. And our motley crew of characters find themselves holed up in a Bushwick nightclub, having to decide ‘do we get out of here or do we board the place up?’ And they’ve got to survive the night. It’s about a group of non-fighters finding the survival skills deep within.

Vanishing Angle’s Matthew Lee Miller and Natalie Metzger are producing Queens of the Dead. Miller told Deadline, “As soon as we started casting, we knew we needed a team that could deliver on the film’s bold, eclectic vision. This cast exceeds our wildest expectations. Their combined talent and chemistry are electrifying. Tina’s vision is a game-changer, and we believe this ensemble will create something truly unforgettable, honoring the Romero legacy while pushing the boundaries of the genre.

Metzger added, “I’ve been obsessed with this script and Tina’s vision from the moment that I read it. It’s so incredibly fun and unique. This film is not just a continuation of the Romero legacy but a fresh take that is sure to captivate a new generation of horror fans.

What do you think of the cast that has been assembled for Tina Romero’s Queens of the Dead? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Michael Mann

Michael Mann is one of the most meticulous directors there is, maintaining this reputation for more than 40 years in the film industry. From Thief to Manhunter to Heat to Collateral and beyond, we look at his works and often wonder, How? Now, we can find out the answers, as Michael Mann has launched an online project designed to give an in-depth look at his creative process on a given project.

While Michael Mann selecting his most recent movie – last year’s Ferrari – as the one to launch Archives might be a bit disappointing considering his filmography, the plan is to expand this through his entire body of work provided people are actively watching. For Ferrari, fans can check out 20 short documentaries (available in 4K), director notes, script excerpts, set photos, plans from various departments, transcripts of Mann’s discussions with cast/crew, and much more. Access to all of this costs $65.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Michael Mann, now 81, noted, “It is a spectacular, rewarding, creative act to direct a motion picture. It’s a very large endeavor. The movie is two hours — making it is a year and a half. So much goes into deciding, thinking through what you are going to do.” He added, “Directors have no idea how any other director makes a movie. And so we each evolve our own particular process. This is an opportunity to pass that on, convey something I’m just very enthusiastic about. I think it is the best work that any man or woman can do, period. And I’ve thought that since I was 20 years old. And my enthusiasm for it is absolutely unwavering and unremitting.”

We have seen the likes of Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog and Edgar Wright offer online filmmaking classes, but what Michael Mann is doing has a much more personal touch, going into the process of a designated film like so few before him. Hopefully people sign up so we can see his digital archives expand unlike any other director’s. While The Insider is my favorite Michael Mann, I’d like to see him do Collateral next.

What stands as Michael Mann’s masterpiece for you? Which film do you want him to explore in this series?

Apex, Charlize Theron, Netflix

Charlize Theron is a one-woman wrecking crew when it comes to conquering challenges on the silver screen, and soon she could face one of her most formidable foes ever in Apex, a high-profile thriller destined to scale the Netflix charts. Theron is in final negotiations to lead Apex, a genre thriller, with Baltasar Kormákur negotiating to direct from a script by Jeremy Robbins. Plot details are scarce, though Deadline says Apex is like Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, with the story following a rock climber who finds herself getting hunted in the wild. The title is a play on an apex being the top or highest part of something (like a cliff) and a particularly dangerous predator in the wild. The more you know!

In addition to her starring role, Theron will executive produce Apex alongside Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix through their newly minted media outlet. Kormákur will produce for RVK productions, and Ian Bryce and Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready will produce through Chernin Entertainment.

In a rare instance, Netflix purchased Apex after getting blown away by the script. The project had only producers then, making it a rare acquisition. Theron and Kormakur were the platform’s first picks for a lead actor and director. Thankfully, both were highly interested in Apex after loving the original story.

Theron recently offered an update about her long-gestating Netflix sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard. The Old Guard 2 went into production in 2022, and filming had to be halted briefly after a fire broke out at the film studio where the movie was shooting: Rome, Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios. Then there was a shake-up at Netflix during post-production, so the project got shut down for a while – but Theron has told Variety that The Old Guard 2 is now back on track and coming soon.

Theron said, “Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it. It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.” She told Variety it will be released “soon.”

Based on a graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard was scripted by Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film introduced viewers to a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

Are you interested in learning more about Apex? What do you think could be hunting Theron’s character as she explores a cliffside? Let’s see your suggestions in the comments section below.
