The Terror, Devil in Silver, Dan Stevens

Dan Stevens (Legion, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Abigail) is ready to draw summoning circles in a psychiatric hospital for The Terror: Devil in Silver, the third chapter of AMC NetworksThe Terror horror anthology. Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and author Victor LaValle co-wrote The Terror: Devil in Silver, based on LaValle’s novel. The story finds Stevens dabbling with forces beyond his control as pieces of his sanity break away.

Here’s a synopsis for Devil in Silver courtesy of Amazon:

New Hyde Hospital’s psychiatric ward has a new resident. It also has a very, very old one.

Pepper is a rambunctious big man, minor-league troublemaker, working-class hero (in his own mind), and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He’s not mentally ill, but that doesn’t seem to matter. He is accused of a crime he can’t quite square with his memory. In the darkness of his room on his first night, he’s visited by a terrifying creature with the body of an old man and the head of a bison who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It’s no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic who’s been on the ward for decades and knows all its secrets; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD, who tries desperately to send alarms to the outside world; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl who acts as the group’s enforcer. Battling the pill-pushing staff, one another, and their own minds, they try to kill the monster that’s stalking them. But can the Devil die?

“I’m thrilled to be a part of The Terror: Devil in Silver,” Stevens said about joining the horror anthology series. “This series is a dark symphony of psychological horror and gripping drama, set to rock the audience. Victor LaValle, Christopher Cantwell, and this incredible team have crafted a unique and twisted dance of devils and shadows. I look forward to delivering something epic that will echo through the halls like an iron bell.”

In addition to The Terror: Devil in Silver, Dan Stevens stars in Tilman Singer’s upcoming horror thriller Cuckoo. I saw a trailer for Cuckoo ahead of Longlegs, and holy sh*t. It looks intriguing! The story of Cuckoo follows a 17-year-old girl forced to move with her family to a resort where things are not what they seem. The trailer makes the movie look super intense, making the preview the perfect appetizer leading into my screening of Longlegs, which could be my favorite movie of the year.

Alien: Romulus

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th – and movie-goers will have the chance to eat popcorn out of a very cool popcorn bucket when they go to see it at Cinemark theatres. With the release date one month away, a new promo for the film dropped onto social media, and Álvarez has given a quote where he compares the film’s chestburster scene to a nature documentary. You can see the promo and read the quote further down in this article.

When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“

It has also been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has previously said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away. Graphic and gruesome is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

Speaking with Total Film, Álvarez said there’s a chestburster scene that required nine puppeteers to properly bring the creature’s movements to the screen. He added, “It is done almost like a nature documentary. While we were seeing it on set we were joking, [like] ‘The creature is coming out slow. It’s looking for the scent of the mother…’ The creature’s not trying to be scary. The creature is trying to get the fuck out of that cocoon, that happens to be a person. It’s almost like this is more realistic in a way, but without betraying all the beautiful things of the original designs.

This new Alien movie is coming to us from Momentum and 20th Century Studios, with Ridley Scott producing through his Scott Free banner.

The Old Guard

The Charlize Theron action film The Old Guard was a hit for the Netflix streaming service when it was released in 2020, but the sequel The Old Guard 2 has had an unexpectedly bumpy ride while making its way out into the world. It went into production back in 2022, and filming had to be halted briefly after a fire broke out at the film studio where the movie had been shooting; Rome, Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios. Then there was a shake-up at Netflix during post-production, so the project got shut down for a while – but Theron has told Variety that The Old Guard 2 is now back on track and coming soon.

Theron said, “Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it. It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.” She told Variety it will be released “soon.

Based on a graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard was scripted by Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film introduced viewers to a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

Rucka wrote the screenplay for the sequel and serves as executive producer. The Old Guard 2 is being produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger of Skydance, Theron, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix of Denver and Delilah, and Marc Evans of Marc Evans Productions. Prince-Bythewood is also on board as producer.

The Old Guard 2 was directed by Victoria Mahoney, who has previously directed episodes of multiple TV shows, including You and Lovecraft Country, and was also the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Theron is joined in the cast by fellow returning Old Guard cast members KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Veronica Ngo, as well as new additions Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re flashing back to 1981, one of the busiest years for slasher movies in box office history, to take a look at director Ken Hughes’ Night School (watch it HERE). It’s a cool movie, and you can hear all about by checking out the video embedded above.

Scripted by Ruth Avergon, Night School has the following synopsis: Police in Boston begin to examine a series of murders connected to a local night school. All of the victims are female students who have been decapitated in what appears to be a ritual beheading. Suspicion falls on one of the professors.

The film stars Rachel Ward, Leonard Mann, Drew Snyder, Joseph R. Sicari, Nicholas Cairis, Karen MacDonald, Annette Miller, Bill McCann, Margo Skinner, Kevin Fennessy, Elizabeth Barnitz, Holly Hardman, Meb Boden, Leonard Corman, Belle McDonald, and Ed Higgins.

Here’s what Real Slashers is all about: Ahhh the ’80s. A simpler time where the blood ran red, the boobies swung freely, and the weed was copiously smoked. A time where rampant killers were simply excuses for excessive sex and over the top murder. Yes, we’re looking at an era where the slasher movie ran wild over cinemas everywhere. Today, we’re looking at “Real Slashers.”

The show is Written, Narrated, and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

What do you think of Night School, and how did you like this episode of Real Slashers? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The juice is loose as the latest Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer rises from the grave to share new footage from one of 2024’s most anticipated films. Few sequels hitting screens in 2024 hold as much cache and expectation as the long-gestating follow-up to Tim Burton’s 1988 classic, Beetlejuice. Opening weekend for this movie is likely to blow the box office away, and from looking at today’s trailer, Burton is pulling out all the stops to make sure Beetlejuice Beetlejuice lives up to the legacy of the original.

Today’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer gives us a broader look at the upcoming film, with Jenna Ortega’s disaffected teen attitude on display, Burton’s signature set designs looking more elaborate than ever, and Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice giving audiences plenty of reasons to remember why he’s the Ghost with the Most. The new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer includes tons of new footage, almost to the point where one could say it’s too much. If you want to go in fresh to Burton’s latest film, this is not the preview for you.

In the latest Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer, Keaton’s Beetlejuice gets wind of his old flame, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), being back in town, giving him the opportunity he needs to return to the Land of the Living for another shot at love. As all hell breaks loose, enemies from the Afterlife seek to derail Beetlejuice’s plans as he and Lydia search for Astrid (Jenna Ortega), Lydia’s daughter, who’s lost in the Underworld. The trailer proudly displays Burton’s signature style, love of practical effects (though there are some CGI elements on display), and ability to direct an ensemble cast of comedic greats.

Here’s the official synopsis for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice:

Keaton returns to his iconic role alongside Oscar nominee Winona Ryder (Stranger Things, Little Women) as Lydia Deetz and two-time Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt$ Creek, The Nightmare Before Christmas) as Delia Deetz, with new cast members Justin Theroux (Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, The Leftovers), Monica Bellucci (Spectre, The Matrix films), Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon) in his feature film debut, with Emmy nominee Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Scream VI) as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things, At Eternity’s Gate).

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Burton, a genre unto himself, directs from a screenplay by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Wednesday), a story by Gough & Millar, and Seth Grahame-Smith (The LEGO Batman Movie), based on characters created by Michael McDowell & Larry Wilson.  The film’s producers are Marc Toberoff, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Tommy Harper, and Burton, with Sara Desmond, Katterli Frauenfelder, Gough, Millar, Larry Wilson, Laurence Senelick, and Brad Pitt executive producing.

What do you think about the latest Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer? Are you excited about getting reacquainted with Keaton, Ryder, and O’Hara and meeting the rest of the gang? Let us know in the comments section below.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice comes to theaters on September 6, 2024.
