Month: July 2024

The world has been plunged into darkness. The dead persist violently among the living. What remains of humanity following a cataclysm I helped trigger is now at each other’s throats. I carry my share of the blame, but it’s clear the gods must pay for what they’ve done to us. There’s a path to seeking justice, and it…

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, Rust, dismissed, new trial

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for her role in the death of cinematographer Haylna Hutchins, but after Alec Baldwn’s case was recently dismissed, she has filed a motion for her charges to be dismissed as well or to be given a new trial.

Justice demands that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s conviction be overturned immediately, ensuring that the legal system does not perpetuate this core affront to our system that has been watched all over the world,” reads the motion from Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys Jason Bowles and Monnica L. Barreras. “This Court stated on July 12 that the integrity of the judicial system demanded that the Court dismiss Mr. Baldwin’s case with prejudice. How can it be any different with Ms. Gutierrez-Reed’s case?

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed Baldwin’s case after learning that special prosecutor Kari Morrissey had withheld evidence. After Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty in March, a retired Arizona police officer turned in bullets that he claimed came from the same source as the bullet which killed Hutchins. Although Baldwin and his team were unaware of the bullets, Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys did know about them. They had hoped that the sheriff’s department would analyze the bullets, but they did not. “Instead, the State placed them in a separate case file and attempted to hide them,” reads the motion.

The attorneys added that the bullets aren’t the only thing withheld from them, as interviews with several key witnesses were also kept under wraps. “The repeated discovery failures are certainly beneath what Ms. Gutierrez-Reed deserved,” the filing says. “And for her, the impact has been devastating.

After Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for her part in Hutchins’ death, her defence team filed motions for her to be released from jail and be given a new trial, but Judge Sommer denied them. “You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon,” Judge Sommer said to Gutierrez-Reed during her sentencing. “But for you, Ms. Hutchins would be alive, a husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother.

Will Hannah Gutierrez-Reed be granted a new trial or even have the charges dismissed? Time will tell.

Viggo Mortensen, Lord of the Rings, Aragorn

Viggo Mortensen was already an established actor prior to playing Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, but his career was certainly propelled to new heights. While many actors would use the success of a major franchise to jump to other franchise movies, Mortensen didn’t take that path.

While speaking with Vanity Fair, Mortensen was asked why he never made another franchise movie after Lord of the Rings. The actor explained that it’s not because he’s opposed to the idea; he just hasn’t been presented with one that caught his attention.

I don’t really look for or avoid any kind of genre or any size budget. I just look for interesting stories,” Mortensen said. “It doesn’t matter to me what the genre is or what the budget is or who’s making them. I would never do a movie just because so-and-so is directing it. It has to be about the story. And if I think I’m right for the character, that always comes first.

Mortensen continued: “That goes for franchises. If somebody came to me with X movie, the third part or the ninth part, and I thought it was a great character and I wanted to play that character and I thought I had something to contribute, I’d do it. I’m not against it. But they’re not usually that good. I mean, to me, they’re not usually that well-written. They’re kind of predictable. I mean, of course, there’s always the issue of if I run out of money.

It’s possible that Mortensen could return to the Lord of the Rings franchise with the upcoming Gollum movie. The project, which is set to be directed by Andy Serkis, is expected to take place during the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring. Serkis has teased that “characters we recognize” might be coming back, with the most likely candidates being Gandalf and Aragorn. Both Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen have expressed a tentative willingness to return, but Mortensen recently said it would have to make sense.

I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard,” he said. “Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.

AMC, Netflix, Walking Dead, Interview with the Vampire

A “curated selection” of AMC shows will soon be available to stream on Netflix, thanks to a recently closed deal between the two streaming services.

The AMC shows will be available on Netflix for a year starting on August 19th. The shows include The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 1, Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire Season 1, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Season 1, Monsieur Spade Season 1, A Discovery of Witches Seasons 1-3, Dark Winds Seasons 1-2, Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 1-8, Gangs of London Seasons 1-2, Into the Badlands Seasons 1-3, Kevin can F*** Himself Seasons 1-2, Preacher Seasons 1-4, That Dirty Black Bag Season 1 and The Terror Season 1. The first seasons of The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will launch on Netflix on January 13, 2025.

As the Netflix audience is considerably larger than AMC, the network hopes that this will help bring attention to its shows and perhaps drive a little traffic back to AMC+.

This agreement puts our high-quality shows in front of the vast audience of Netflix subscribers with the AMC brand clearly represented. These curated titles are also being strategically windowed to drive interest in current and upcoming seasons on our direct-to-consumer and partner platforms,” said Kristin Dolan, CEO of AMC Networks. “We believe this significant expansion of our Netflix relationship will drive viewership and engagement on Netflix, while also raising awareness and interest in our award-winning content on AMC-branded and partner platforms across our distribution ecosystem.

This isn’t the first time AMC has done something like this, as it previously sent Fear the Walking Dead, Killing Eve, and five other shows to Max for two months last year. It’s been said that this paid off well for AMC, so a partnership with Netflix should prove to be another success. Personally, I’ve been meaning to check out Interview with the Vampire, so perhaps this will be the perfect time to do it.

Will you be checking out any of these AMC shows when they make the leap to Netflix next month?

Colin Firth, Young Sherlock

Guy Ritchie is assembling quite the cast for his upcoming Young Sherlock series, with Colin Firth announced today as the latest addition.

Inspired by Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels, the Prime Video series will be “an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin will star as the young detective, alongside Joseph Fiennes and Natasha McElhone as Sherlock’s parents and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an. Colin Firth will play Sir Bucephalus Hodge in Young Sherlock.

Guy Ritchie will executive produce the project and direct all eight episodes. “In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” Ritchie said in a statement. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.” The series will be scripted by Matthew Parkhill.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said, “This exciting, new chapter about one of the world’s best-known literary characters, will delight our global customers with its captivating storytelling. With the brilliant creative team, led by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill, we will explore untold mysteries of how young Sherlock found his way to a life of truth-seeking.

Ritchie has plenty of experience with the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective, having directed Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. There’s been talk of a third installment for over a decade, but the project seems to be stuck in development hell. Ritchie said last year that the ball was in Downey Jr.’s court.

Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it HERE) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and sure enough, that’s exactly what the movie is. It’s set to receive a Paramount+ release in the U.S. and in select international markets on September 27th, kicking off the Halloween season. With two months to go before we reach that release date, Vanity Fair has unveiled several images from the film. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Apartment 7A started out with an original screenplay written by Skylar James. Natalie Erika James and Christian White, who wrote the script for her feature debut Relic with her, performed their own rewrite of the script. Skylar James was a writer on the comedic Netflix series The Green Beret’s Guide to the Apocalypse, which was executive produced by Matt Damon and has never been released despite wrapping production in 2018.

The director told Vanity Fair, “I never would’ve signed on to do a remake of such a classic and seminal film. But it’s been a joy to be able to play within the world and the sandbox of Ira Levin’s novel and also play with the characters. I guess my motivation for taking it on was feeling like there was a different emotional journey to be explored and to do it in a way that skewed the genre a little bit.

The film stars Julia Garner of Ozark and has the following synopsis: When a struggling, young dancer (Garner) suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame. Set in 1965 New York City, the film tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary moved in.

Vanity Fair reminds us that a young woman named Terry had been taken in by Rosemary’s neighbors Minnie and Roman Castevet in the original film. Terry (played in the original by Angela Dorian) crosses paths with Rosemary in the basement laundry room of The Bramford. Terry explains that the Castevets rescued her from homelessness and drug abuse, taking her into their lives and giving her free room and board.

Garner is joined in the cast by Dianne Wiest (The Lost Boys), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), Marli Siu (Anna and the Apocalypse), Andrew Buchan (All the Money in the World), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Wonka).

Paramount+’s Jeff Grossman provided this statement: “Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season. Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.

Krasinski produced Apartment 7A with Allyson Seeger through their company Sunday Night Productions, while Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller produced through Platinum Dunes. Alexa Ginsburg oversaw the project for Sunday Night Productions, while Alex Ginno did the same for Platinum Dunes.

Apartment 7A has been rated R for some violent content and drug use.
