Stranger Things

While the Duffer brothers work on wrapping up their Netflix series Stranger Things, which is currently in production on its fifth and final season, Netflix has given the greenlight to a horror series called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which is being executive produced by the Duffers.

Created by Haley Z. Boston, who previously worked for Netflix as a writer on Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Brand New Cherry Flavor (and for Prime Video as a writer on Hunters), Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. That’s not a spoiler – just read the title… It will be interesting to find out just what sort of horrific events are going to end up disrupting this wedding.

The Duffer brothers (Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer) serve as executive producers alongside Hilary Leavitt through their Upside Down Pictures, which has an overall deal with Netflix. Andrea Sperling is another executive producer. Boston will also serve as an executive producer, and is the showrunner. As Deadline notes, it’s quite an impressive accomplishment for Boston to be “showrunner of her own passion-project series at the age of 29.”

The Duffers provided the following statement: “We were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice — her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just… very Haley. We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s VP, Scripted Series (US & Canada) added: “We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with dream partners Matt, Ross and Hilary to bring this unexpected and spine-tingling story to life through Haley’s uniquely riveting vision.

Does Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen sound interesting to you, and are you looking forward to seeing what else we’re going to be getting from the Duffer brothers now that Stranger Things is coming to an end? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The music industry is a harsh landscape. If you’re not careful, it will chew you up and spit you out. While some artists dream of fame, fortune, and immortality, executives see artists as cogs in a machine. If a suit can squeeze you for all you’re worth, they’ll do so without thinking twice. If any band knows this unfortunate cycle, it’s the German R&B act Milli Vanilli, who fell from grace after rising above the stars and getting exposed as industry puppets. Vertical welcomes to the stage Simon Verhoeven’s Girl You Know It’s True trailer, depicting the rise and fall of Milli Vanilli.

Here’s the official synopsis for Girl You Know It’s True:

Girl You Know It’s True follows the true story of Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, who conquered global music charts as the pop duo “Milli Vanilli.” Their fame turned to infamy when it was revealed the iconic voices behind their hits were not their own but those of other singers.

Simon Verhoeven directed and wrote Girl You Know It’s True, which starred Tijan Njie, Elan Ben Ali, Matthias Schweighöfer, Bella Dayne, Graham Rogers, Ashley Dowds, and SteVonté Hart. Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, and Kirstin Winkler produced.

In the Girl You Know It’s True trailer, Pilatus and Morvan enter the musical arena with stars in their eyes and the best of intentions. Sadly, the people in charge of their meteoric rise are only interested in making money rather than art. With little information on how the music industry works, Pilatus and Morvan go along with the plan to pantomime their way up the charts. When the duo gets exposed for lip-syncing and stealing another group’s music, their dreams of becoming R&B legends go up in flames. While people still remember Milli Vanilli, the band’s shattered legacy comes to mind before their hit songs. It’s far from the mark Pilatus and Morvan wanted to make, reducing them to a cautionary tale instead of legends in the entertainment world.

My sister was obsessed with Milli Vanilli. I could hear “Baby Don’t Forget My Number,” “Blame It On The Rain,” and “Girl You Know It’s True” coming from her bedroom 24/7. I remember the shocking news about the band’s fall from grace and how upset scores of teens had become. What a time to be alive. The Girl You Know It’s True trailer captures much of that time’s mood. Let’s hope the film serves Milli Vanilli well and tells the actual story of two hopefuls with the best of intentions who became victims of an industry that is unafraid to twist artists to make a buck.

Girl You Know It’s True dances into theaters on August 9, 2024.

Tenacious D, Kyle Gass, Jack Black

Jack Black is halting Tenacious D‘s current tour and canceling “all creative plans” for the hard-rockin’ duo after bandmate Kyle Gass’s on-stage joke landed the band in hot water. During a performance in Sydney on Sunday, Gass cracked a controversial joke related to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump that Black was unprepared for and did not condone. In the middle of the band’s electrifying set, Black asked Gass to make a wish, to which Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The quip went off like a lead balloon, with Black and crowd members stunned by Gass’ poorly-worded witticism.

Black addressed his fanbase about the gaff today on social media, saying, “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Gass also shared an Instagram post expressing his regret for the joke and apologizing for making light of the political violence, saying, “The line I improvised on-stage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”

The backlash to Gass’s poorly chosen words has been swift, with an Australian senator calling for the band to be deported. Tenacious D is supposed to play another week in Australia before heading to New Zealand, but Black announced today he’s canceling the tour, and “all creative plans” are on hold. According to reports, “remaining tour dates and refunds will be provided at a later date.”

What this news means for Tenacious D remains to be determined. Words contain more power than people think. An off-hand comment with little foresight can have harsh ramifications, regardless of the intended tone or meaning. Black’s ties to the Democratic party are strong, with the comedic actor practically being the spokesperson for a generation of eager voters. Stepping away from the spotlight could smooth things over, though how Tenacious D can recover from this instance remains uncertain.

M3GAN

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review HERE, get a copy HERE) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. We’ve known that M3GAN stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw will be reprising their roles in M3GAN 2.0, which is set to reach theatres on June 27, 2025 – and now, with filming underway, Deadline reports that Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps are also returning from the first movie. New additions include Ivanna Sakhno (Ahsoka), who recently landed a major part in the sequel, Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows), Timm Sharp (Blunt Talk), and Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live).

Based on a story crafted by produced James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). Johnstone is returning to the helm for the sequel, and Cooper has written the script.

The first film has the following synopsis: She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

From the most prolific minds in horror — James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man — comes a fresh new face in terror.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems — a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.

M3GAN 2.0 is being produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and Allison Williams, with Johnstone executive producing alongside Mark Katchur, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Ryan Turek, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath.

Are you looking forward to M3GAN 2.0? What do you think of the cast that has been assembled for the film? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Luke Brandon Field Jojo Rabbit

Earlier this year, the writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes brought us the 1977-set horror film Late Night with the Devil, which was about “the live broadcast of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.” Now Deadline reports that director Brad Watson (I’ll Play Mother) is currently in production on a film that sounds like the radio version of Late Night with the Devil, the 1979-set horror film Video Killed the Radio Star. With Harriet Cains of Bridgerton and Luke Brandon Field of Jojo Rabbit in the lead roles, Video Killed the Radio Star is filming in London.

The story of this one centers on a pirate radio DJ (Field) who accidentally unleashes a demonic force during his broadcast, turning the station into a battleground for humanity. As the supernatural threat spreads through the airwaves, the DJ and his assistant (Cains) must confront the horrors they’ve unleashed. It will be interesting to see how the demonic force is presented here, but it sounds promising so far.

Video Killed the Radio Star is coming our way from the recently launched genre outfit Dreamtown, which was previously known as The Number 44 and is a division of UK firm Goldfinch. Phil McKenzie and Michelle Arnusch are executive producing. The screenplay by Ben Charles Edwards (Quant) and Kirsty Bell (A Bird Flew In) is said to explore “how the rising popularity of 1980s music videos posed a threat to traditional radio broadcasts. 1979 was the year The Buggles released their classic song with the same title as the movie.” It’s a great title for a great song, now we’ll see if it’s going to be the title of a great movie as well.

Edwards provided the following statement: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Luke Brandon Field and Harriet Cains headline Video Killed the Radio Star. Luke’s intensity and Harriet’s dynamic presence are perfect for bringing our characters to life.

Bell added: “Dreamtown has set out to deliver precisely what the market desires by offering unique and captivating angles in our storytelling. We couldn’t be more excited.

Saint Clare Bella Thorne

Back in 2019, it was announced that Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch had signed on to star in a horror comedy called Clare at 16, which was going to be written and directed by Mark Pavia, the filmmaker behind the 1997 Stephen King adaptation The Night Flier, and based on a novel by Don Roff. That iteration of the project didn’t make it into production, and in 2022 Bella Thorne (Infamous) not only signed on to star in the title role of what was now being called Saint Clare, but she also brought Dying to Play (a.k.a. Braid) director Mitzi Peirone on board to write and direct the film. Saint Clare just had its premiere at the Taormina Film Festival, and during the event Thorne revealed to Deadline that she helped edit the serial killer movie.

The Don Roff novel told the following story: The small town of Pickman Flats offers a bright sunny place filled with quaint shopping and wine tasting. But underneath the town’s inviting exterior lies a dark underbelly, a sinister element that lurks in the shadows. Clare is a devoted vegan who goes to Catholic high school, is fastidious in her manner, and also, well, a serial killer. The Other Clare takes over at the most inopportune of times. She tries to keep her inner beast’s lust for blood at bay, but it’s hard when there are so many creeps around who help to unleash it. What secret lies hidden beneath Pickman Flats? And who is Clare really?

Scripted by Peirone and American Psycho co-writer Guinevere Turner, Saint Clare follows Clare Bleecker (Thorne), a quiet catholic college student with a divine vocation for killing.

Thorne is joined in the cast by Ryan Phillippe (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Rebecca De Mornay (Mother’s Day), Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction), Bart Johnson (High School Musical), and Dylan Flashner (The Card Counter).

When Deadline mentioned there were genre and stylistic parallels between the short film Unsettled, which Thorne directed (and will be expanding into a feature called Color Your Hurt), and Saint Clare, Thorne said that may be because she “reedited Saint Clare. I didn’t like the way the first movie was edited – I think everybody was pretty unhappy with it. And then I was like, ‘I know these takes, I know there’s better stuff, I know it’s on the editing room floor. Let me take a stab at it and I’ll bring you a better project.’ Editing is such a fickle thing. If you get an amazing editor and you have quite a few sessions of really understanding the movie and talking about the movie with them, you do come out with a much better project.” Thorne is currently negotiating to receive an editing credit alongside credited editor Patrick Sanchez Smith.

Speaking with Variety, Peirone mentioned that her approach to Saint Clare involved taking inspiration from the story of Joan of Arc. “Clare’s role model is Joan of Arc because she literally gave everything, herself included, to her mission. She says: ‘The fire that burns inside of me is stronger than the fire around me,’ which is a great message.

Saint Clare had secured U.S. distribution through Screen Media, but since that company’s owner recently filed for bankruptcy, the film is now searching for another distributor.
