Agatha All Along, Marvel, Joe Locke, Kathryn Hahn

Heartstopper’s Joe Locke brings something wicked to Marvel’s Agatha All Along, the upcoming series about the return of Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness after she becomes trapped in an enchanted prison by the Scarlet Witch. Blissfully unaware of her power, the facade shatters upon the arrival of Billy Kaplan (Locke), a mysterious goth teen who turns Agatha’s world upside down. Today’s update shares details about Locke’s Billy Kaplan and two new pictures from the series courtesy of Empire Magazine.

Alongside the images, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer tells Empire that Billy’s arrival disrupts Agatha’s world, leading her on a dark quest. “It’s his idea to travel the Witches’ Road to get her power back,” Schaeffer explains. But in order to go on the Road, you’ve got to get a coven together. So how does a witch that no one will trust bring her sisters together?

Speaking with Empire, Locke says his character was only known as ‘Teen’ while filming episodes of Agatha All Along. “He’s a familiar; he’s like the assistant to the coven,” Locke explains. “Teen is a big fan of witchcraft and witches, so for him to be taken under Agatha Harkness’ wing and form a coven and go down the Witches’ Road is his dream. He’s fanboy-esque, and in his element. Which is very fun — because I was [too]!”

Kathryn Hahn says fans should prepare to experience a whole new side of Agatha after she traverses the Witches’ Road. “We’ve seen her with all her bravado and crazy confidence,” explains Hahn. “So much of Agatha is performance. It was exciting to get to the kernel under the sass and sarcasm and taking pleasure in other people’s pain. There’s something broken under that, big-time.”

In addition to Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza, Agatha All Along features Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Debra Jo Rupp, Maria Dizzia, Emma Caufield Ford, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, and Holly Ward. Marvel says fans should expect something spooky when Agatha All Along comes to Disney+, as the show contains many horror elements. This detail excites people who wish Marvel would break away from old habits by introducing new vibes to its content. Marvel recently broke the R-rated mold with Deadpool & Wolverine, and now Agatha All Along could give us something scarier than Werewolf By Night.

batman, caped crusader, review

Plot: After a family tragedy, socialite Bruce Wayne transforms into The Batman, where his crusade for justice spawns unforeseen ramifications.

Review: The original Batman: The Animated Series is considered by many, myself included, to be one of the best cartoon series ever. It didn’t pander, it had an iconic look, it had voice talent that included legends like Mark Hamill, Rodd McDowall, Paul Williams, Michael Ansara, and as Batman the voice of the late, great Kevin Conroy.

BTAS would be the forerunner to other iconic animated series like Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Superman The Animated Series. It would produce feature films as well, like The Mask of Phantasm. It would be the birthplace of Harley Quinn, who has become a DC live-action film staple. But she got her start here in the guise of Arleen Sorkin.

What I’m saying is that BTAS is a hard act to follow. I was excited and skeptical when I heard that we were getting a series that would see Bruce Timm returning to the Batman animated landscape along with Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams. It would be hard to recapture what made the original great. Then I saw the trailer and was blown away by how close the style was to the original. My hopes grew.

So did my hopes get dashed with this latest animated Dark Knight when I finally watched it? No, but I also wasn’t overwhelmed either. As I said, there’s something really special about the original series that would be hard to recapture. Batman: Caped Crusader is trying really hard to do that, and there’s hope that it will eventually get there.

What I loved about this new entry is the voice cast. Hamish Linklater, who played a different kind of Batman in Midnight Mass, is doing an amazing job here, sounding a lot like Kevin Conroy. It’s actually a beautiful sort of tribute to the late actor who had cemented himself as the voice of Batman in this setting. Minnie Driver is a gender-swapped Penguin named Oswalda Cobblepot; Diedrich Bader, who has played Batman previously, is Harvey Dent/Two-Face; Jamie Chung is Harley Quinn; Christina Ricci is Catwoman; Tom Kenny, AKA Spongebob, is Firebug. The cast list keeps going and is filled with several familiar names and great actors.

For the first season we do get several familiar villains in new styles, the Penguin being one of the bigger changes. One of my favorite episodes is number 2, Be A Villian, which features Clayface and is a massive homage to classic Universal monsters in various ways. Keep your eyes out for all the easter eggs.

This new Batman isn’t afraid to go very dark and show actual murder on screen. And that’s where some of this doesn’t work for me. Being more mature in nature is fine; this is an Amazon series. But there’s a strange tone and pacing to a number of the episodes, possibly due to their time frames only being around 25 minutes. This could be because now Amazon will make you either watch commercials or pay extra to skip them. I can’t help but think the odd feeling of rushing and not getting a deeper story would be fixed by maybe an extra 5 to 10 minutes of extra time.

The animation doesn’t flow as well as I would hope. When you come from a studio like Amazon, which has a series like Invincible that can throw back to 90s-style animation but make it modern and as bloody as it is, you’d think it could be done here easily. But unfortunately, it doesn’t feel quite right. I’m hopeful that if a second season is greenlit, we’ll see this become smoother.

Batman: Caped Crusader is a good start for a re-entry into the BTAS universe. It’s got a lot going for it, and I can’t say enough how much I love Hamish Linklater’s voice here. I’m not ashamed to say I teared up a little bit. I hope he knows how much that means to fans of the OG.

Batman: Caped Crusader is worth a watch if you grew up loving the original or if you are a Batman fan in general. It nearly sticks the landing on what it is trying to do and only stumbles a little bit. It’s a fun, nostalgic trip back to Gotham. Just don’t take any dark alleys.

Batman: Caped Crusader airs on Amazon Prime Video on August 1st.

Academy Awards host

Jimmy Kimmel will not return as host for next year’s Academy Awards, reportedly turning down the offer to give his fifth go at the gig. Not only that, but John Mulaney is also out, having also been sought after by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As per Puck, Kimmel told the Academy that he would not return just this summer, opening the stage for any number of potential hosts. Kimmel, of course, has been one of the most popular hosts in recent years, leading in 2017, 2018, 2023, and last year. For the record, Kimmel would tie Johnny Carson if he hosts again, although that still pales Billy Crystal’s nine and Bob Hope’s record 19.

So, what about John Mulaney as host of the Academy Awards? After his hilarious stint as the MC of the Governors Awards, Mulaney was quickly thrust into the conversation. But he might be too busy, also rejecting the offer. He had previously said he would consider it, although the air might be too stuffy. “I hosted the Governors Awards, and I really had fun doing that. I will say: I’m open to whatever. I personally have an affinity for [something lower key]. It’s so fun to try to do your absolute best at not the biggest award show, like the Spirit Awards or Governors Awards. They’re just a little more relaxed and casual. Going in and trying to have a sh*tload of fun is a great feeling.”

There are a number of avenues to consider taking as far as who the host of the 97th Academy Awards will be. They could certainly go with a past favorite like Chris Rock, who hosted in 2005 and 2016, although whether he’s comfortable returning to the Dolby Theatre seems unlikely for a while considering he turned down the job last year. The Academy could also go with no host, as they did for three consecutive years in 2019-2021.

But nixing the host seems like a poor decision, as that spot is tradition and one of the draws of the ceremony. More than likely we will hear something about the hosting gig sometime in the fall, the time frame in which it’s been announced as of late. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2nd.

Who do you think should host the 97th Academy Awards?
