Spookies

The 1980s horror film Spookies was a notoriously troubled production. Filming began in 1984 with Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran at the helm… but then creative and legal issues arose during post-production, so that version of the film (which was going by the title Twisted Souls) was never completed. Instead, an investor hired Eugenie Joseph to shoot new footage – involving a different cast and a lot more monsters – that was then mixed together with the footage left over from Faulkner and Doran. This mish-mash was released under the title Spookies in 1987, and over the decades it has developed a cult following. And that cult is now so large, Spookies producer/co-writer Frank Farel is moving ahead with Spookies 2!

Farel dropped the sequel news into an interview with The Barrens Hideout Podcast at the Dark Arts Festival in Lincoln, Rhode Island last weekend. He said (with thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for the transcription), “Remarkably, [Spookies] has done well enough in its revival that I’m at the start of raising financing for a sequel. I’m hoping to get a couple of name horror actors into it. I’m also looking to make a film that is almost an anti-sequel. I don’t just want to rehash what was done the first time. I don’t want to even make a typical sequel. I want to make something that’s an animal of its own. It’s different in so many ways. The way I’m doing it, it’s almost intended as a mockery of what happened to our original film.

Farel admitted that he hated the original Spookies because “it was not our film. It was sort of taken apart and reassembled. It was just not the film we had made. We did not like anything about what was done to it.” Despite that, the script for Spookies 2 is “a love letter to the fans who have made it possible to make another Spookies movie simply because they responded so positively to the first one.

The first Spookies (which, by the way, was shown on a memorable episode of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs a few years ago) has the following synopsis: After their car breaks down, a group of travelers finds themselves stranded in a remote part of New England. When they take shelter in a spooky old mansion, complete with a graveyard, they discover a Ouija board and decide to spend the night attempting to summon some spirits. But the group soon learns that playing with the forces of black magic isn’t fun and games, and it’s not long before they’re head-to-head with all sorts of demonic creatures, shapeshifters, and other forms of evil, all of whom are more than happy to pick them off in the most gruesome of ways.

Peter Dain, Peter Iasillo, Joan Ellen Delaney, Soo Paek, Nick Gionta, Anthony J Valbiro, Lisa Friede, Kim Merrill, Charlotte Alexandra, Al Magliochetti, Felix Ward, Alec Nemser, and Maria Pechukas star.

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad. But now Deadline reports that genre regular James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, etc.) and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.”

Wan is expected to direct the film and will be producing, with Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott serving as executive producers. EVP of Production Development Jay Polidoro will be overseeing the project for Universal.

Directed by Jack Arnold from a screenplay crafted by Harry Essex, Arthur Ross, and Maurice Zimm, Creature from the Black Lagoon has the following synopsis: Remnants of a mysterious animal have come to light in a remote jungle, and a group of scientists intends to determine if the find is an anomaly or evidence of an undiscovered beast. To accomplish their goal, the scientists must brave the most perilous pieces of land South America has to offer. But the terrain is nothing compared to the danger posed by an otherworldly being that endangers their work and their lives.

The original film was released in 1954 and was followed by Revenge of the Creature in 1955 and The Creature Walks Among Us in 1956. The fact that the Gill Man hasn’t starred in a new film in nearly 70 years isn’t due to a lack of interest in the character. Remakes of Creature from the Black Lagoon have been in and out of development hell for over 40 years at this point, passing through the hands of writers and directors like Jack Arnold, Nigel Kneale, John Carpenter, Bill Phillips, Herschel Weingrod, Timothy Harris, Ivan Reitman, Gary Ross (son of Arthur Ross), Guillermo del Toro, Tedi Sarafian, Breck Eisner, Carl Erik Rinsch, Dave Kajganich, Jeff Pinkner, and Will Beall. In one version, the creature was going to be the result of a pharmaceutical corporation polluting the Amazon. Another version was going to end with a rocket launcher battle and the creature catching a ride on a helicopter with Dr. Henry Jekyll. There’s no word on what Wan’s approach to the creature will be.

Midnight, Rosario Dawson, Milla Jovovich, Alexandra Shipp

Hollywood is assembling a force to be reckoned with as Rosario Dawson (Kids, Daredevil, Clerks 2) joins Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse, Barbie, Shaft) and Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Monster Hunter, Return to the Blue Lagoon) for the upcoming action thriller Midnight. Dawson joins the project as a producer and actor, with first-time filmmaker Joshua Otis Miller directing for Yale Productions. The plan is to shop the project for potential buyers at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

According to Deadline, Midnight revolves around a young, blind woman (Shipp) who is hunted by a collective of international criminals led by Jovovich’s character. The deadly group wants a package they believe was given to Shipp’s character by her federal agent sister (Dawson). The group assumes stealing from the visually impaired will be easy, but that assumption is about to go terribly wrong. Lamont Magee and Jeff Byrd wrote the script.

“Without giving away too much, ‘Midnight’ is an awesome action movie, revolving around duty and sacrifice,” Rosario Dawson said regarding her enthusiasm to join Midnight. “It’s about coming into your own and embracing your independence, but at its core, it’s a movie about family and that’s what really resonated with me. I’m so thrilled to be a part of such an incredible project with this spectacular cast and crew.”

“Partnering with Rosario on this film has been an amazing experience,” said Levine and Jordan Beckerman. “She’s a remarkably talented actress, and we couldn’t be more impressed by her creative process as a producer. Dawson, along with Alexandra Shipp and Milla Jovovich, give action packed fantastic performances, and we cannot wait for audiences to see ‘Midnight.’”

Rosario Dawson is never short on projects to dig into. She played Catwoman for 18 episodes of DC Batman: The Audio Adventures, reprised her role as the Jedi Ahsoka Tano for the Star Wars live-action series Ahsoka and voiced Kokoro for the upcoming animated film Terminator Zero. She’s got two other projects in production, including the animated TV series Ghosts of Rain, in which she voices Prism. Ghosts of Rain follows a group of gamers competing in the first-ever neural reality battle royale game “Ruin.” However, a malicious virus appears and transforms their utopia into a hellish reality. Dawson also stars in Lee Baker’s Speed of Light, a thriller focusing on Pierce Black, the first to test pilot a speed-of-light plane. The experience traumatizes him, and he falls into a coma. He wakes to superhuman abilities and can step into visions of the past, where he discovers that his wife’s death was not an accident and her killers are after him.

With Rosario Dawson, Alexandra Shipp, and Milla Jovovich ready to throw down for Joshua Otis Miller’s Midnight, the first-time director is bringing heavy hitters to the playing field. We’ll keep our eyes on this one and are curious to see who picks up the film at TIFF next month.

Halloween

Boss Team Games recently worked with Saber Interactive, Renaissance Pictures, STUDIOCANAL, MGM, and Lionsgate to bring fans Evil Dead: The Game, a cool project that stopped developing new content surprisingly soon after it was released. Now Boss Team Games has moved on to a different popular horror franchise, as IGN reports that they’re working on two video games based on the 1978 classic Halloween!

Details on these Halloween games are scarce at this point, but IGN was able to confirm that Boss Team Games are developing them in collaboration with the producers of the Halloween franchise. They also learned that one of the games is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and will include input from original Halloween John Carpenter. Carpenter, who is said to be “intimately involved” with the project, provided the following statement: “As a huge gamer myself, I’m thrilled to help bring Michael Myers to life again in this game, and my hope is to scare you silly.

Coming our way from Boss Team Games, Compass International Pictures, and Further Front, the Halloween video games will allow players to relive moments from the film and play as classic characters from one of the most iconic and important horror films of all time.

Boss Team Games CEO Steve Harris had this to say: “Everyone at Boss Team Games are huge fans of horror and Halloween obviously holds a special place in the hearts of all horror fans. Getting to work with iconic characters like Michael Myers and build on John Carpenter’s original vision is literally a dream come true. Everyone at Boss Team is thrilled and honored to be working with Malek Akkad and John Carpenter to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience that fans of the movie and video games will love.

Directed by Carpenter from a screenplay he wrote with Debra Hill, the original Halloween has the following synopsis: THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME! Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween Night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.

The film stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, P.J. Soles, Nancy Kyes, Charles Cyphers, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, John Michael Graham, Nancy Stephens, and Nick Castle.

Wesley Snipes Blade

A Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of the Blade property has been making its way through development hell for the last five years, and if / when the script for that project is ever figured out and the new Blade can go into production, Mahershala Ali will be taking over the title role. While we wait to see how that situation is going to turn out, original Blade actor Wesley Snipes returned to the role – almost twenty years after the release of his last Blade movie, Blade: Trinity – for an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, which is currently enjoying massive success at the box office. Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds has called for Marvel to give Snipes’ Blade a “Logan-like send off” movie… and someone who has a pitch for just such a project is Beau DeMayo, who has worked with Marvel as writer / showrunner of the first season of the Disney+ series X-Men ’97.

In response to a report on Reynolds’ post saying Snipes’ Blade should get a send off movie, DeMayo dropped his pitch on social media: “Vampire dystopia where they learned to daywalk and took over. Humans are cattle. Brother Voodoo, part of the human resistance, learns Blade was desiccated/entombed and resurrects him so they can hunt Varney and the Darkhold cult to wipe out all vampires. Treat it like Kurosawa.

The idea of a vampire apocalypse was something that David S. Goyer, who wrote the Snipes Blade trilogy, toyed with when he was working on those films, but he never brought it to the screen. That could be a great set-up for a send off movie – and it’s fun that DeMayo would want to have the Brother Voodoo character in there, too.

With the Mahershala Ali Blade still in the works, chances of one last Wesley Snipes Blade movie actually getting made are probably slim to none, but it’s something cool to think about. It’s also unlikely that Beau DeMayo would get the job to write that Blade movie, if it were to happen, as Marvel chose to fire him from X-Men ’97 after the first season.

What do you think of Beau DeMayo’s Blade pitch? Would you like to see Wesley Snipes’ version of the character get a send off movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Rachael Lillis, Pokemon, Misty

Today is a sad day in the animation and voice-acting community as word spreads about the untimely passing of Rachael Lillis, the iconic voice of Pokémon characters Misty and Jessie, and more. Lillis died of complications from breast cancer. She was 46.

Veronica Taylor, who voices Ash Ketchum for the long-running Pokémon franchise, shared a message with fans online about Rachael’s passing, saying, “It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August 2024,” Taylor wrote. “Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. She will be forever remembered for the many animated roles she played, with her iconic performances as ‘Pokemon’s’ Misty and Jessie being the most beloved. Rachael was so thankful for all the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled cancer. It truly made a positive difference. Her family also wishes to thank you as they take this time to grieve privately. A memorial is being planned for a future date.” Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2024.

“We all know Rachael Lillis from the many wonderful roles she played. She filled our Saturday mornings and before/after school hours with her beautiful voice, her terrific comic timing, and her remarkable acting skills,” Taylor wrote. “I was lucky enough to know Rachael as a friend. She had unlimited kindness and compassion, even until the very end. She had a great sense of humor, was wonderful to be with, incredibly intelligent, and had such a memory. She worked hard and cared deeply. I am not sure how this very dark void will be filled now that her light no longer shines in it. Like the shooting stars in the Perseids, Rachael was a magnificent wonder and truly special. She burned bright and vanished too soon. She will live on in our memories for eternity.”

Lillis’s contributions to the animated medium are vast. In addition to voicing Misty and Jessie for the Pokémon franchise, she contributed to other beloved properties like Berserk, His and Her Circumstances, Now and Then, Here and There, Boogiepop Phantom (my personal favorite), Sonic X, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bakuman, Mobile Suit Gundam, Your Lie in April, and more.

Ms. Lillis leaves behind a legacy many voice actors can only aspire to. With her talent spread across so many beloved properties, her memory will endure through her work for generations to come. We wish Rachael’s family, friends, and fans condolences and peace during this difficult time. Thank you for all the good times, Mr. Lillis. Rest well.
