I love a great surprise. And this year, a handful of terrific films inspired and thrilled us. The latest flick to bring all the feels is the fantastic Didi. The movie tells the story of a young and rambunctious 13-year-old living in 2008. Izaac Wang, as the lad, is remarkable in a challenging performance that makes the film near perfect. Joan Chen also shines as a mother who has to carry a heavy burden. It’s an incredible feature directed by Sean Wang, and if you didn’t get to check it out during its initial release, I’d highly recommend it as it moves into an expanded release on Friday, August 16.
Recently, we sat down for interviews with the film’s writer/director, Sean Wang, as well as Joan Chen and Izaac Wang. After complimenting my backdrop, we immediately jumped into the conversation. Sean opened up about telling this personal story. And it also gave me the chance to praise Ms. Chen. She is fantastic here, and she discussed one particular moment that nearly had the audience in tears. All three involved did such lovely work. If you want something exceptional, I cannot recommend Didi highly enough. The performances are flawless, and undoubtedly one of the best summer films this year.
Didi has the following synopsis: In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love his mom.
Izaac Wang and Joan Chen are joined in the cast by Shirley Chen, Raul Dial, Sunil Maurillo, Joziah Lagonoy, Joshua Hankerson, and Georgie August, among others.

Back in March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review HERE), courtesy of Neon – and they’ll also be be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. We still have six months to wait before the movie reaches the big screen, but a teaser trailer has arrived online today, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Perkins wrote the screenplay for The Monkey, working from a King short story. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.
Theo James (The White Lotus) plays the twins in later years, while Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) plays them in their younger days. Also in the cast are Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Tatiana Maslany (She–Hulk: Attorney at Law), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).
James Wan and Michael Clear are producing The Monkey for Atomic Monster, while Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan produce for C2 Motion Picture Group. Executive producers include Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Peter Luo and Nancy Xu of Stars Collective, John Friedberg of Black Bear, and Chris Ferguson. Atomic Monster and Stars Collective developed the project, and C2 Motion Picture Group provided the financing.
Wan previously provided the following statement: “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.“
In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs.
Are you looking forward to The Monkey? Check out the teaser trailer, then let us know by leaving a comment below.
The Borderlands movie finally hit theaters this past weekend and quickly became one of the worst-reviewed movies of 2024. So it’s probably not surprising that Borderlands is bombing hard at the box office and might end up being the biggest flop of the year.

One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new Blu-ray transfer of the film sometime this year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental will be hitting retailers in late 2024.
The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene. The plot description reads, “After air traffic controller Jack Chester loses a plane (it’s covered on his screen by a fly), he’s told to take a break. Jack books his family into a plush resort, but it turns out that their lodgings are in a hut by the beach, and that’s as good as the vacation gets.” Reiner would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.
Not a lot has been announced for special features at this time, but the specs read: Video Codec: MPEG-4 AVC Resolution: 1080p Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1
Audio TBA
Subtitles English SDH
Disc Blu-ray Disc
Playback 2K Blu-ray: Region A (B, C untested)
Kino Lorber has a specialty for releasing some rare-to-find films, although their library varies as they also announced the special 4K release of the early Dwayne Johnson action-comedy The Rundown. However, the label also recently revealed that they will be releasing a special 30th-anniversary edition of the cult film Radioland Murders. That film is lesser-known work of Star Wars creator George Lucas and stars Brian Benben and Mary Stuart Masterson. The 1994 film was directed by Mel Smith and the screenplay was penned by Lucas with Willard Huyck, Gloria Katz, Jeff Reno and Ron Osborn. The movie was also produced by Star Wars: Special Edition and Star WarsEpisode I-III producer Rick McCallum.
