Move over, Daft Punk, because Nine Inch Nails is moving closer to the future of the Tron series, with the industrial band landing scoring duties for the upcoming Tron: Ares

Even though a lot of their music (the Ghosts albums come to mind) can often play like a soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails has done very little work in that realm, having previously only done the music for video game Quake. With Tron: Ares, Nine Inch Nails will finally give us an idea of all that could have ever been.

Even still, Trent Reznor — who was the sole member of Nine Inch Nails since its inception in 1988 until Atticus Ross officially joined in 2004 — has made an incredibly successful transition from the music studio to the movie studio. With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). They would lose out on their Mank nomination, but hey, having as many wins as Henry Mancini is definitely a bragging right. Keep in mind that even though Reznor and Ross are the only members of Nine Inch Nails (excluding touring members), they have previously only been credited on the big screen with their actual names. In addition to other works for David Fincher like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, Reznor and Ross also recently did the music for Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All and Challengers. And who can forget being the oddball choices forTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem?!

Samples of the upcoming Nine Inch Nails score for Tron: Ares were featured at this week’s D23 event, which our own Alex Maidy was in attendance for and has been giving us all the updates you need.

As for Tron: Ares itself — which wrapped filming in May — we know that it “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” It is currently slated for release on  October 10th, 2025.

Are you excited for Nine Inch Nails to score Tron: Ares? Do you think it can top Daft Punk’s work on Legacy? Hop in that pretty hate machine and let us know your thoughts!

As expected, Lucasfilm used D23 to launch the first official trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Starring Jude Law, the series is being billed as a coming-of-age story set in the Star Wars universe. It centers around a young quartet, played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, who cross paths with a mysterious Jedi named Jod Na Nawood, who’s being described as a quick-witted charmer.

The trailer, while short, promises a bigger scope than other recent Star Wars series, with the look impressively cinematic. The series certainly has an impressive roaster of directors, including Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home), David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon), the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian) and Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters).

Here’s the official synopsis from Disney and Lucasfilm:

“Skeleton Crew” follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, crossing paths with the likes of Jod Na Nawood, the mysterious character played by Law. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

And that’s not all, folks. They also used the occasion to talk about The Mandalorian and Grogu, which even got a tiny teaser. Alas, it hasn’t been made available online yet, but according to our man on the ground at D23, Alex Maidy, the footage featured an ice world similar to Hoth and even AT-AT Walkers. This movie, which is due out in May 2026, will be the official return of Star Wars to the big screen, and apparently, the footage shown makes it clear that this wait has not been in vain.

Fresh off of blowing up Hall H at Comic-Con with their announcement that Robert Downey Jr is back in the MCU (playing Doctor Doom) comes D23, the ultimate Disney fan event happening in Anaheim. Our man Alex Maidy is on the ground now, in the audience, and will be sending in his life dispatches, so if you’re missing the event, we’ve got you covered.

Here are the announcements (as they come in):

The First (Tiny) Peaks at Snow White & Tron: Ares revealed:

Just like they did with Comic-Con, the presentation started off with a quick sizzle reel teasing some of the footage being doled out during the presentation. Most noteworthy was the fact that it contained tiny snippets of Gal Gadot in character as the Evil Queen in Snow White, as well as a glimpse at Tron Ares (check out more about that movie HERE).

Moana 2:

The presentation started with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson teasing Moana 2, which began life as a Disney Plus series before pivoting to a feature. In the presentation they teased that this time the villain would be the “storm of all storms.” Here’s the new trailer, which dropped during the presentation:

Monster Jam:

It looks like Moana 2‘s not the only thing keeping Johnson in-house at Disney. He’ll also be making a movie out of the Monster Jam event where trucks battle each other in an arena:

Avatar 3 gets an official title.

None other than James Cameron then took the stage to tease the next instalment in the Avatar franchise, which he promises is going into “challenging territory” and is “not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.” He also promised we’ll see a lot more of Pandora than ever before. He then brought his stars, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana on-stage, who announced the official new title, Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Pixar:

Fresh off its juggernaut success at the box office, Inside Out 2 is getting a Disney Plus spin-off from Pixar called Dream Productions, which is coming in 2025. It’s set between the first two films and explains where Riley’s dreams come from. Even cooler is the fact that they officially announced Toy Story 5 for 2026, with none other than Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, Finding Nemo) writing and directing!

The Accountant 2, release date

Per Deadline, The Accountant 2 has been slated for a theatrical release on April 25, 2025. Currently, the film doesn’t have any competition on that date, but it does arrive a week after the release of Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic and a week before the release of Marvel’s Thunderbolts*.

The official synopsis reads: “When her former boss is killed by unknown assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is forced to contact Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Jon Bernthal), Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive—all intent on putting a stop to their search.

The Accountant starred Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations.

By the time The Accountant 2 hits theaters next year, it will have been nearly a decade since the first movie’s release. The sequel has once again been directed by Gavin O’Connor from a script by Bill Dubuque. In addition to Affleck, Bernthal, and Addai-Robinson, the film stars J.K. Simmons, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, Robert Morgan, and Grant Harvey.

Before they got the green light for the sequel, Affleck said the project could have become a TV series instead. “We’ve talked about it,” Affleck said. “There seems to be a debate whether or not to do a TV series version of it. The scriptwriter [Bill Dubuque] has become quite successful and busy, so he’s off doing his thing. And somebody said to me, ‘Well if we could find a script that we could retrofit and make into a sequel… But that’s sort of tricky because the personality of the character is so specific, that doesn’t really work to just say, ‘Well, we used call this script Action Movie Shootout, and now we’re going to call it The Accountant 2′.

Borderlands, R-rated

Eli Roth’s long-awaited Borderlands movie has finally hit theaters, but unfortunately, it isn’t off to a great start. The project started production in 2021, and according to stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, they were told that Borderlands would shoot with the assumption that it would be R-rated.

We were shooting an R-rated movie when we did it. We always knew that we were going to go either 15 or R rating, it’s 15 in UK, for a slightly mature audience,” O’Dee told ScreenRant. “So, we were blowing people’s heads off. And we were cutting feet off. We were doing all of that. But then, you know, a lot happens. We shot that nearly three years ago, or we just finished it. So, I guess a lot happens in post, and they see where it’s going to go and what market they’re aiming for. But literally the idea and the brief was carnage, head cutting off, feet cutting off. Go for it and then we’ll sort it out in post. It was that kind of thing.

Given Roth’s history in the horror genre, it’s no surprise that he would want to bring a little of that to Borderlands. “He loves horror,” O’Dee said. “It was funny, he was on the second unit, he came over, and he was like, “Uh… just cut the ankles off. Yeah, get the knife and cut the ankles and we will leave these stubs.” It was kind of like there wasn’t enough gore for him sometimes. Eli was all over that kind of stuff. He was great to work with. It was such a fun time with him.” The film ultimately received a PG-13 rating for intense sequences of violence and action, language and some suggestive material.

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett as Lillith, an infamous outlaw who returns to the place where she grew up and forms an alliance with a team of misfits to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. The ensemble cast also includes Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap.

Our own Chris Bumbray called the film a “disaster” that desperately wants to be the next Guardians of the Galaxy but lacks the charm or vision to do so. Bumbray added that it was “one of the worst big-budget movies I’ve seen in a while” and will likely be forgotten entirely in just a few weeks. Yikes. You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Could Borderlands have been saved (or at least helped) by an R-rating? Based on the many negative reviews (the film currently sits at 7% on Rotten Tomatoes), its problems run more profound than a little more blood and gore.
