Aliens

Sigourney Weaver was the star of the Alien franchise for four movies straight. She played heroine Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s Alien, James Cameron’s Aliens, and David Fincher’s Alien 3… and even though Ripley didn’t make it out of Alien 3 alive, Weaver still returned to play a clone of the character in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection. 27 years have gone by since the last time Weaver starred in an Alien movie, and the franchise has continued without her through the crossover movies Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, the prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, the “mid-quel” (it slots in between the events of Alien and Aliens) Alien: Romulus, and the upcoming TV series Alien: Earth. But during a recent interview with Deadline, Weaver confirmed that she would “consider” returning to the role of Ripley if the offer came up.

When asked if there’s a future for Ellen Ripley on screen, Weaver replied, “I feel like she’s never far away from me, but on the other hand I have yet to read a script that said “you have got to do this.” So for me, she is in this other dimension, safe from the Alien for the time being. I don’t really think about it, but you know, it’s not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material. How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I’m also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest.

As Weaver mentioned, Alien projects that would have featured the return of Ripley have come up over the years. Neill Blomkamp was developing an Alien 5 that would have picked up after the events of Aliens, ignoring Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection so Weaver and Michael Biehn would be able to reprise the roles of Ellen Ripley and Colonial Marine Dwayne Hicks. Weaver was interested in coming back for that one, but Blomkamp’s Alien project was scrapped because Ridley Scott was working on his prequel movies.

A few years ago, franchise producer Walter Hill wrote a 50 page treatment for a sequel that would star Weaver as Ripley and, as Hill described it, “tell a story that scares the pants off your date, kicks the ass of a new Xenomorph, and conducts a meditation on both the universe of the Alien franchise and the destiny of the character of Lt. Ellen Ripley.” But that idea didn’t seem to go anywhere.

Netflix is ready to enter a steel cage with WWE co-founder Vince McMahon on September 25 for the documentary series Mr. McMahon. Before McMahon resigned from the WWE, he was the face of the world-famous wrestling outfit for generations. McMahon helped elevate the sport to astronomical heights by signing legends like Hulk Hogan, Mean Gene Okerlund, Big Scott Hall, Wendi Richter, Kokina Maximus, Rick Martel, and more to the AWA.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mr. McMahon courtesy of Netflix:

Mr. McMahon chronicles the rise and fall of Vince McMahon, a controversial businessman and co-founder of WWE. From his transformation of the WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse to the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation, this six-episode series offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life and his enduring franchise. Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates, and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations — filmmaker Chris Smith (Tiger King) and executive producer Bill Simmons (30 for 30) present an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment.

Mr. McMahon consists of six-hour episodes, which Chris Smith directs. The presentation hails from Library Films in association with Ringer Films. Bill Simmons, Zara Duffy, and Smith are executive producers. Speaking about his intentions for the upcoming documentary series, Chris Smith said:

The goal behind ‘Mr. McMahon’ was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world. Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind.”

For context, WWE’s board of directors investigated Vince McMahon in 2022 for a $3 million hush money payment. While looking into his dealings, the board found McMahon making $12 million in payments to four women who alleged sexual misconduct against him. The rabbit hole goes deeper than this, but that’s what the documentary is for.

Mr. McMahon will body-slam Netflix subscribers on September 25, 2024.

Back in June, it was announced that Michael Chernus (Severance) had been cast to play serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the Peacock limited series Devil in Disguise, which is inspired by the 2021 Peacock docuseries John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, produced by NBC News Studios. Now Variety has revealed the names of five more cast members. They are: Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us), James Badge Dale (1923), Michael Angarano (Red State), Chris Sullivan (Mercy), and Marin Ireland (Hell or High Water).

Gacy murdered 33 young men between 1972 and 1978. According to Variety, this limited series will peel back the twisted layers of Gacy’s life while weaving in heartrending stories of his mostly gay victims; exploring the grief, guilt, and trauma of their families and friends; and exposing the systemic failures, missed opportunities and societal prejudices that fueled his reign of terror.

As mentioned, Gacy is set to be played by Chernus. Luna will play Detective Rafael Tovar, Dale will play Chief of Detectives Joe Kozenczak, Angarano’s character is lawyer Sam Amirante, Sullivan will play Lead Prosecutor Bill Kunkle, and Ireland is taking on the role of Elizabeth Piest, whose 15-year-old son Robert was one of Gacy’s victims.

Patrick Macmanus is writer and showrunner on Devil in Disguise and serves as an executive producer under his Littleton Road Productions banner. Kelly Funke of Littleton Road is also executive producing, alongside Noah Oppenheim and Liz Cole of NBC News Studios, plus Ashley Michel Hoban and Ahmadu Garba. UCP is producing.

When Chernus was cast, he provided the following statement: “I’m both excited and humbled by this opportunity. The direction that the writers are taking with this project is important, focusing on the victims and their families as well as those who finally brought John Wayne Gacy to justice. While Gacy was the perpetrator of these horrific crimes, I’m relieved that he won’t be the main focus of the series. It’s heartbreaking for me to think of what his victims (all young men and boys) could have done with their lives had the system not failed them so tragically. I believe in the power of storytelling and hope that by telling this story, in a thoughtful way, we can play some part in preventing this from ever happening again.
