Nobody 2, Colin Hanks

Colin Hanks has joined the cast of Nobody 2, and according to THR, he might not be playing a good guy.

Nobody 2 will start shooting this month under the direction of Timo Tjahjanto, who is stepping in for the first film’s Ilya Naishuller. Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell, the mild-manner family man who keeps his past as a government assassin under wraps. Connie Nielsen is also returning as Hutch’s wife, Becca, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s father, a retired FBI agent. It was announced last month that Sharon Stone would be playing the main villain of the sequel.

As for Colin Hanks, THR’s sources say he will be playing a “corrupt sheriff with none-too-nice ambitions” in Nobody 2.

The first film was released in 2021 and starred Odenkirk as “an unassuming family man who cowers and folds during a home invasion. His post-traumatic shame disorder reignites a long-cooled fire within, and he summons a secret lethal skill set for a revenge mission, only to see it backfire spectacularly and put his family in greater jeopardy.” Even after his heart attack on the set of Better Call Saul, Odenkirk has been keen to return for more. “Let’s make Nobody 2,” Odenkirk said in 2022. “And I’m going to kick more ass than I ever have. Universal has been very upbeat and welcoming. Derek [Kolstad, screenwriter] and I have talked story. It’s not a sure thing yet, but we’re working on it. I think the signs point to yes.

Our own Chris Bumbray was a big fan of Nobody, calling it the “best commercial action movie we’ve gotten in a long while.” He also had plenty of praise for the leading man. “Odenkirk really goes to town in this one, raking up a body count that probably doubles that of all three Taken movies combined,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “But it’s not just mindless action. Odenkirk makes you care about the character and his family, with him having a warm, affectionate and believable relationship with his on-screen wife, played by the great Connie Nielsen, and his kids. We get that he loves them and doesn’t want to disappoint them, but once the killing starts it ain’t gonna stop.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Crawl 2

THR has reported that Paramount Pictures is developing Crawl 2, a sequel to the 2019 gator horror film directed by Alexandre Aja.

Production on the sequel is expected to get underway in Europe this fall, with Alexandre Aja returning to direct. He will also produce alongside Craig Flores and Sam Raimi. Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, best known for writing Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Project Almanac, are penning the script. The report states that Crawl 2 will revolve around a new cast in a new location, this time said to be New York City.

The first movie starred Kaya Scodelario as Haley, a University of Florida swimmer who ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper) when a massive hurricane hits her hometown. After finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $91 million on a budget of just $15 million. It also happened to be one of Quentin Tarantino’s favourite films of the year.

Given the success of the first movie, it’s somewhat surprising that it took five years to get the sequel going, but it wasn’t for lack of enthusiasm. In 2021, Aja said that they have “been talking about a sequel non-stop, and putting together a really, really fun take.” Even then, he knew he wanted to move on to another character and let Haley have her victory. “I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like… more hurricane driven, man versus animal,” Aja said. “So maybe it will be another story altogether. We’re looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit.

What do you hope to see in Crawl 2?

The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Michael Giacchino, main theme music

The D23 Expo has kicked off in Anaheim, California, and attendees at the Music of Marvel panel were treated to something special: Michael Giacchino’s main theme for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. You can listen to the theme for yourself below.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now in production, with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, and Julia Garner as the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer. Additionally, the great Ralph Ineson will play Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will launch Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is being directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer. Shakman has teased that the movie will be unlike anything we’ve seen from Marvel so far. “It’s different in so many ways,” Shakman said. “I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before.

The official title of the film was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con last month, as was a short teaser trailer that concluded with a glimpse of Galactus himself. Shakman confirmed that the film is set in an alternate 1960s inspired by famed concept artist Syd Mead. “We’re not just doing the ’60s, we’re doing retro-future ’60s,” Shakman said. “It’s part what you know from the ’60s, but part what you’ve never seen before. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.

Alien: Romulus

Just like Ripley and Bishop in Aliens, the character played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) in director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (which is set to reach theatres on August 16th) wears Reebok sneakers – and just like Reebok has sold replicas of Ripley and Bishop’s “Alien Stomper” sneakers in recent years, they’ll also be selling limited edition sneakers that match those worn by Spaeny in Alien: Romulus! Called the Reebok Alien: Romulus sneaker, this shoe is built upon Reebok Basketball’s iconic BB4000 II frame. It will go up for sale on the Reebok website at 9pm PT / 12am ET on August 26th / 27th, and will be going for the price of $170.

Geek Culture informs us that the Alien: Romulus Reebok features an all-leather upper, distressed film-worn finish along with a Weyland-Yutani logo on the tongue and heel. The EVA foam midsole, and a solid rubber cupsole with a grippy traction pattern provides extra grip, perfect for bug hunting, or stomping in this case. An image of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article.

When Alien: Romulus was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“

It has also been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Spaeny is joined in the cast by Isabela Merced (Madame Web), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has previously said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away. Graphic and gruesome is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

Kevin Sullivan, dead, WWE

It was announced today that Kevin Sullivan, a pro-wrestling legend who faced off against the likes of Dusty Rhodes, Randy Savage, Barry Windham, and Hulk Hogan, has died at the age of 74.

In a statement, World Wrestling Entertainment said, “WWE is saddened to learn Kevin Sullivan has passed away at age 74. A unique and influential figure in sports-entertainment history, Sullivan found success both in the ring and behind the scenes with his penchant for far out ideas that pushed creative boundaries.

The statement continues: “As a villain, Sullivan was a major rival for the ring’s most legendary heroes, including Dusty Rhodes, Hulk Hogan and The Road Warriors. He specialized in leading dangerous factions, which included his wicked Army of Darkness, collegiate bullies The Varsity Club, and the wild Dungeon of Doom, which introduced Big Show to the wrestling world. The onetime ‘Taskmaster’ also became a creative force behind the scenes for WCW.

The cause of death isn’t clear at this time, but Sullivan did suffer a “devastating accident” early last month that was said to have had a major impact on his health. “Kevin suffered a devastating accident,” Sullivan’s family said in a GoFundMe for the wrestler. “He underwent emergency surgery that saved his leg and life but faced severe complications, including sepsis and encephalitis. This unforeseen catastrophe has placed an immense financial burden on his family, as Kevin has been in and out of consciousness in the ICU, far from home.” The last update on July 15th indicated that Sullivan was regaining his strength and had been doing physical and occupational therapy every day.

Sullivan started out as an amateur wrestler in Bostin during the 1970s and worked for a variety of wrestling organizations throughout his career, including the National Wrestling Alliance, the World Wide Wrestling Federation (now known as the WWE), World Championship Wrestling, and more. He took advantage of the “satanic panic” of the ’80s and branded himself the Prince of Darkness. He was joined by a female valet known as Woman, who was portrayed by Sullivan’s wife, Nancy Toffoloni. After the pair divorced in 1997, Toffolini married fellow wrestler Chris Benoit, who sadly murdered her and their seven-year-old son in 2007 before committing suicide.

Our thoughts go out to Kevin Sullivan’s family and friends during this sad time.

Chiwetel Ejiofor Mordo

The 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange featured a post-credits scene in which the character Mordo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, revealed that he was on a mission to whittle down the number of sorcerers in the world. At one time, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was going to open with a scene where Mordo’s mission would lead him to a confrontation with Elizabeth Olsen’s character Scarlet Witch – a confrontation that would end with him losing his head. That scene got dropped, so we never actually saw the Doctor Strange version of Mordo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, even though a multiverse variant of the character did get involved along the way. The original Mordo we met is still out there, and still (we assume) hating on sorcerers. And even though there’s no indication that we’re going to be seeing him again anytime soon, Ejiofor remains positive and excited about his future in the MCU.

Mordo came up while Ejiofor was making an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When asked if Marvel had told him their plans for the character, the actor said (with thanks to ComicBookMovie for the transcription), “Sure, there was sort of broad – like with any of these things that develop over time – ideas which always felt like they would be subject to manipulation, change, or reinvention. … There’s still the opportunity for different aspects of that to come to fruition and, to be honest, there were completely new areas for Mordo that didn’t exist in the conversation at that time which also have all this capacity and potential. It definitely depends, which I think is exciting, on the vision. An individual or the team’s vision for those stories as they move forward. I’m excited about [that]. I feel like there are some extraordinarily engaged and talented people within the context of that. It’s a world that still holds a lot of excitement for me. … I think there’s a beautiful open door there and just finding the moment to tell those stories where it’s genuinely the most exciting part of that story you can tell and focus a light on. I think has the potential to be really remarkable.

When asked how he felt about playing a different Mordo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he said, “Like I [said], it was something new. It was something I hadn’t predicted at all. In that context, I thought it was fascinating. I felt like there was something potentially really exciting about where that could go. I like that broadly. I like the idea these characters and worlds can be explored in these really incredible ways.

While we wait to see when Mordo is going to pop up in the MCU again, Ejiofor has been working on a Marvel Comics adaptation that exists outside the MCU: Sony Pictures’ Venom: The Last Dance, which is meant to wrap up the Venom series and is aiming for an October 25th theatrical release. There was a rumor that Ejiofor’s character might be Orwell Taylor, the leader of the group known as The Jury.
