Month: August 2024

Earlier versions of the "Like a Prayer" battle sequence in Deadpool & Wolverine would have featured zombies and/or demons

Labor Day weekend is always infamously slow at the box office. Many considered last weekend the summer’s big dumping ground, with both The Crow and Blink Twice crashing and burning pretty badly at the box office. But folks, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet, with this weekend among the quietest in recent memory. The only wide-release is the Blumhouse AI thriller AfrAId (get it?). That one didn’t screen for critics (we’ll have our review up in the morning), and no one expects it to make much of a dent at the box office, with it having – at best – a fourth-place opening in sight with about $6 million.

The Dennis Quaid starring Ronald Reagan biopic, Reagan (which we interviewed him about right here), is also going semi-wide via a company called ShowBiz Direct. Quaid has been eagerly promoting the reverent biopic but is also courting faith-based audiences to embrace the film. It remains to be seen if they’ll turn out, as other than The Chosen, those films have been struggling at the box office, despite Sound of Freedom and Jesus Revolution being major hits last year. At best, I expect a $5 million opening in 5th place.

As for the number one and two spots? Deadpool & Wolverine will have its last crack at the top spot, with it on track for a $10 million weekend. Next weekend, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice will easily take the top spot, so this will no doubt be the MCU superhero team-up’s last hurrah at the top of the box office heap. Alien: Romulus should take second place this weekend with about $8 million. It Ends With Us should make about $7 million in third place, but it could leapfrog over Romulus to take the second place spot.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine: $10 million
  2. Alien: Romulus: $8 million
  3. It Ends With Us: $7 million
  4. AfrAId: $6 million
  5. Reagan: $5 million

Apple Original Films wants audiences to experience Ridley Scott’s Napoleon like never before with Napoleon: The Director’s Cut, now streaming on Apple TV+. The Director’s Cut includes 48 minutes of new, never-before-seen footage from Scott’s historical epic, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

In addition to marching on $221M+ at the worldwide box office, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon received three Academy Award nominations for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Production Design, and Best Achievement in Costume Design. In addition to a stand-out performance by Vanessa Kirby (Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Crown) as Josephine Bonaparte, Napoleon features visual spectacles when recreating some of the French military strategist’s most devious attacks. The Battle of Austerlitz is particularly brutal, with Napoleon baiting his enemies onto a partially frozen body of water and then destroying the surface with heavy artillery.

Napoleon: The Director's Cut, Ridley Scott, Apple TV+

Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader. The film is a fresh and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby. The director’s cut delves deeper into Josephine’s origin story and features more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets, and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. The audience is also given more details about Napoleon’s demise, from his attempted assassination to his failed invasion of Russia.

Napoleon stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role of the French emperor. Vanessa Kirby joins Phoenix as Empress Josephine, Tahar Rahim, Mark Bonnar, Rupert Everett, and Youssef Kerkour. Ridley Scott directs Napoleon from a script by David Scarpa. The producers on board include Kevin J. Walsh, Mark Huffman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ridley Scott. The film’s executive producers are Raymond Kirk, Aidan Elliott, and Michael Pruss.

It’s wild that, rather than make people wait, you can watch Napoleon: The Director’s Cut on Apple TV+ now. An additional 48 minutes is a significant chunk of new footage, too. What do you think about the trailer? Does it make you want to watch the film again or experience it for the first time? Let us know in the comments section below.

Jurassic World Dominion

Last month, we heard that Amblin Entertainment had filed to trademark the title Jurassic World: Rebirth or Jurassic World Rebirth for several products, indicating that could be the title of the new film that’s currently in production. Sure enough, Deadline has now been able to confirm that Jurassic World Rebirth is indeed the title of the movie, which is aiming for a July 2, 2025 theatrical release – and along with that confirmation comes the unveiling of first look images and some plot and character details! The images can be seen at the bottom of this article.

News of the new Jurassic World movie first hit back in January, when it was revealed that the screenplay – by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise for the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park – had already been written. The project was assembled in a mad scramble after that, with Godzilla director Gareth Edwards ending up at the helm. This new Jurassic World movie won’t be featuring any returning lead characters from the previous Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies, so describing it as a “Rebirth” could be accurate. The characters played by Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern are out, as are the ones played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The new characters are played by the likes of Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Rupert Friend (Anatomy of a Scandal), and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer) – all of whom had their roles directly offered to them. Luna Blaise (Manifest), on the other hand, had to (according to Deadline) “beat out a number of actors” to land her role. David Iacono of The Summer I Turned Pretty, child actress Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Béchir Sylvain (Diarra from Detroit) are also in the cast… along with a bunch of hungry dinosaurs.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) was also offered a role, but he turned it down because he felt his presence in the movie wouldn’t help it. He did say that the script is great, though.

Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are producing the film for Kennedy/Marshall. Steven Spielberg is executive producing through Amblin Entertainment. Universal’s executive vp of production development Sara Scott and creative executive Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.

Here’s what we know about the plot now: Jurassic World Rebirth sees an intrepid team racing to secure DNA samples from the three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air. Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Johansson’s character is Zora Bennett, “a skilled covert operations expert contracted to lead a team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.” Bailey is playing paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, with Ali as Zora’s most trusted team leader, Duncan Kincaid.

Yellowstone

On June 20, 2018, Paramount Network aired the first episode of a neo-Western drama television series called Yellowstone – and a megahit franchise was born. Lately, news regarding the franchise has been focused on what’s coming further down the line. We’ve been hearing casting announcements about the spin-off series The Madison and 1923, and we’ve heard that the flagship show, which was said to be ending with “season 5, part 2,” might continue with a sixth season after all… but before we get there, we still need to see Yellowstone season 5, part 2, which has a premiere date of Sunday, November 10th at 8pm ET/PT. (Internationally, Yellowstone will premiere on Paramount+ in Canada on November 10th, the U.K. on November 11th, and in Latin America, Brazil and France later in November.) With that date still a couple months away, a batch of first look images from the new episodes have arrived online and can be seen at the bottom of this article.

TV’s #1 show, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.

The series was created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, and they both serve as executive producers alongside Art Linson, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay, Michael Friedman, Christina Voros and Keith Cox. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

The Yellowstone season 5, part 2 images below feature the characters played by Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler), Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton), Kelsey Asbille (Monica Long), Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton), Wes Bentley (Montana Attorney General Jamie Dutton), Wendy Moniz (Lynelle Perry), Finn Little (Carter), Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater), and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo).

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a great thriller set in space. Sure, the Dune‘s and Star Wars of Hollywood have given us plenty of spectacle over the years but sometimes I want a smaller story. One that connects on a more human level. And Slingshot does just that, providing a look at a possibly compromised mission to Titan. We follow these three astronauts as they deal with paranoia both about the mission and the intentions of the other astronauts on board. It’s quite the thrill ride and you can check out my glowing review of the film HERE.

I chatted with both Laurence Fishburne as well as director Mikael Håfström about the film. While it took everything in me not to mention 1408 to Mikael, you know I had to mention Event Horizon to Mr. Fishburne. Those opportunities only come along so much, after all. But we also dove into Slingshot and why it stands out from other films set in space. The biggest standout to me was that this could have easily been a stage play, with its usage of a singular setting and character over spectacle. These were such enlightening chats and it’s clear both have a love for this project that you don’t always see during film promotion. Here’s hoping that this can break the August curse and audiences give it a chance, because this is a journey that’s more than worth it.

Slingshot plot:

A psychological thriller starring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne, SLINGSHOT follows an elite trio of astronauts aboard a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality.

SLINGSHOT will be available in theaters nationwide on August 30, 2024.
