Alien: Romulus

In September, Regal cinemas will be offering collectible sandworm-inspired popcorn buckets to celebrate the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – but before we get there, Regal has announced that they’ll also be selling exclusive “Xenomerch” to coincide with the release of director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, which is set to reach theatres on August 16th! Staring tomorrow, August 9th, Regal cinemas will be offering a sleek black Xenomorph head or an illuminated Face Hugger Specimen Container. A press release notes that, “Both popcorn buckets are priced at $34.99 unfilled or $39.99 with an added large popcorn. Plus, Regal Crown Club (RCC) members who purchase these containers in theatre will earn 2X credits.” The following week, on Thursday, August 15th – at select Regal locations – “members of the Alien fandom can also snack while expressing their love of this sci-fi horror release with an exclusive “I’m A Hugger” t-shirt and large popcorn combo available for $24.00. The online Regal Store will also open an Alien: Romulus section featuring themed apparel and collectible items.” An image of some of the items can be seen below, along with a promotional video.

When Alien: Romulus was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“

It has also been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The cast includes Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has previously said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away. Graphic and gruesome is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The last time we shared news on the Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it was production began in June and the names of five cast members were revealed. As production continues, we have more A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms news to share, as Variety has revealed the names of seven more cast members. These are: Edward Ashley (Masters of the Air) as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour (House of Gucci) as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks (Kaos) as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas (How to Have Sex) as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Avengers: Infinity War) as Plummer, Danny Webb (The Dig) as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and Henry Ashton (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder) as a member of a family that’s a major part of the Game of Thrones franchise, Daeron Targaryen. If that name sounds familiar, Variety has a helpful note: “For fans who recently finished Season 2 of House of the Dragon, the Daeron in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is different than the one in the prequel series — just like how there are multiple Aegons in Westeros history.”

These new additions to the cast join previously announced cast members Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Cavel (The Crown) as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) as Tanselle, Daniel Ings (Sex Education) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell (Small Axe: Mangrove) as Maekar Targaryen. Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) star in the series as Dunk and Egg.

Here’s the official logline for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Owen Harris, who directed the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror, is at the helm of three of the six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry) directing the remaining three episodes. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, with Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw also executive producing. The series is based on three novellas published by Martin — The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). All three stories were then collected and published together as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.

Martin has teased that the new series will have a much different tone than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. “The Hedge Knight will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe,” Martin wrote in his blog. “The show will make its debut next year… and if it does well, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight will follow.  By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish The Winds of Winter).

As Martin said, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to premiere sometime in late 2025.

It’s time to get emotional, folks! The highest-grossing animated film ever, Inside Out 2, is coming to homes across the globe, beginning with a digital release (Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home) on August 20 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 10. Take your chance to own the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion globally, and it is currently the 10th highest-grossing film in global box office history!

When Inside Out 2 comes to digital and physical retailers, fans can continue the emotional roller coaster with exclusive content featuring an all-new documentary, an alternative opening, deleted scenes, and much more. The 4K Blu-ray will be available in a Limited-Edition Collectable SteelBook release.

In Pixar‘s Inside Out 2, a teenage Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) attempts to make new friends while navigating a foreign environment and social pressures. Her emotions, Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) return to aid Riley in her mission to fit in. However, with fresh experiences come new emotions, and Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) are moving into Riley’s head. As Riley’s brain becomes crowded with possibilities, unknowns, and what-ifs, she spirals out of control while trying to make sense of her hormones, mood swings, and fight-or-flight intuition.

Like some of Pixar’s best releases, Inside Out 2 comes packaged with tons of bonus content to take you inside the film’s magic. You can check out the full list of features below:

Bonus Features*

  • New Emotions – With Riley’s imminent puberty, the story of Inside Out 2 always suggested that there would be a party of new emotions complicating Riley’s world—and throwing a wrench into Joy’s hard-won stability. But exactly what those new emotions could be was a big question mark. Casting the new emotions in Riley’s mind was a fun exploration into the shifting mindset of a teenager, and was also informed by some of the discarded scenes and characters from the original film. In this documentary we’ll discuss that process of creating Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy—from narrowing them down from a long list of possible emotions, to the design, animation, and voicing of these new, hilarious, and strangely recognizable characters.
  • Unlocking the Vault – In a kind of visual commentary, a group of central creatives watch and discuss the scene “The Vault.” As they stop and start—and refer to various IP versions of the scene—we’ll hear about the inspiration for Riley’s repressed memories like Bloofy and Lance Slashblade, the development of the scene in Story, and the technical challenges of creating 2D characters that exist in the CG world of Riley’s mind.
  • Deleted Scenes
    • Cold Open – In this alternate opening, a now 13-year-old Riley awkwardly fumbles her way through an original song she wrote for a school audition.
    • Broken Joy – After momentarily being unable to drive the console, Joy worries that she might be starting to malfunction.
    • Pool Party – After Riley tries too hard to be fun at an older teen’s party – resulting in utter embarrassment – her “Anxiety” becomes “Self-Loathing” who then ousts our hero emotions from headquarters.
    • Puberty Park – After seeing their faces printed on “wanted posters,” Joy and the others rogue emotions race through a puberty-themed amusement park while being chased by mind worker cops.
    • Shame Spiral – At a lock-in with some cool, older girls, Riley and friends play a game of “Never Have I Ever” that goes a bit too far – wreaking havoc in Riley’s mind.

*Bonus features may vary by product and retailer

I’m so excited to add a copy of Inside Out 2 to my collection! I was lucky enough to visit Pixar during the film’s lead-up, witnessing its inner workings first-hand. That day, I saw so much incredible stuff, and I hope Pixar shares it with everyone when Inside Out 2 comes to home theaters.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, and while the video game adaptation wrapped production back in January after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes, it sounds like they’re doing some reshoots at the moment. Ludi Lin reprises the role of Liu Kang in the new film, and while doing the press rounds for the martial arts movie Art of Eight Limbs, where he co-stars with former TV Spider-Man Nicholas Hammond, Lin took a moment to hype Mortal Kombat 2 to the folks at Screen Rant, saying the sequel is bigger and better than its predecessor, and that Karl Urban’s performance as popular video game character Johnny Cage will “blow your socks off.”

The screenplay for Mortal Kombat 2 has been written by Jeremy Slater, who was the lead writer on the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. Last year, Slater said that working on the project had been “really fun so far. … I’m working really closely with the director and the studios, and the game guys, and I think—I can’t say anything about the actual story, but I think they definitely learned some lessons the last time around in terms of, ‘Here’s the stuff fans responded to, and here’s what people liked out of the movie, and here’s the stuff that didn’t work out as well as we hoped.’ … (The sequel is) the chance to take everything that worked in the first one and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable.

In addition to Lin and Urban, Mortal Kombat 2 stars returning Mortal Kombat cast members Lewis Tan as MMA fighter Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and, as mentioned, Max Huang as Kung Lao. New additions include Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Princess Kitana; Tati Gabrielle (You) as Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana; Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi; bodybuilder/actor Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as Outworld emperor Shao Kahn; Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) as Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel; and Desmond Chiam (Joy Ride) as Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Lin told Screen Rant, “I hope you guys are ready for the next one. We’ve been shooting this one forever, I’m back in Australia still shooting MK 2. I was here for almost a year last time. Yeah, it’s gonna be pretty immense, everything is going to be bigger. The story’s going to be great. Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, I hope you guys are ready, because he’s going to blow your socks off. Just from the experience that actors like Karl, actors like Nicholas [Hammond] brings on set… He mentioned that, in Art of Eight Limbs, they really changed the script – started tweaking it – after they found out that they’d nailed an actor like him to play the role. You can tell, as soon as he comes on it really fills out the entire movie, he fills out the role, just like Karl does with Johnny Cage. There’s just a level of expertise, there’s some toolbox, the essence that they bring to the role just adds another dimension to it. In both cases I really look up to actors like this that can really bring a movie to the next level.

While we wait to hear a release date for Mortal Kombat 2, Art of Eight Limbs is getting a theatrical release on August 16th, in a double feature with another martial arts movie called The Lockdown. Art of Eight Limbs will then be getting a digital release on August 20th, with The Lockdown following on August 27th. On September 10th, those movies will be bundled with two more martial arts movies, Lady Scorpions and Kung Fu Games, for the digital release Tiger Style Presents: The Ultimate 4-Movie Martial Arts Collection. Trailers for the films can be seen in this article.
