Scrubs, revival

While the era of TV revivals may not be quite as prevalent as it once was, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence still feels very optimistic that a revival of his acclaimed medical sitcom will happen.

While speaking with LADbible, Lawrence said, “We’re definitely going to do it, just because we’ve all been enjoying hanging out. Look, there’s no huge drive because everybody’s successful, and I think the show was on for like, 72 years, but on the other hand, medical people over here right now are very heroic to me.

Lawrence continued: “It’s been a tough road, and no one’s becoming a doctor right now to get rich here in America, and we’ve all been hanging out and talking. So I’m open to it. I’m open to it, and I don’t want to do it as a movie, but I’m definitely open to doing a couple more years of that show.

It would not only be fun to see where the characters I used to love are now, but also to see what a young doctor nowadays looks like, as far as the kids coming in behind them, you know,” Lawrence added. “So we’ve been talking a lot about it, and I think we’ll figure it out in the next six months or so what we want to do. I’m just busy too, man, in a great way.” Much of the original cast has expressed a desire to return, so it could actually happen.

Scrubs debuted on NBC in 2001 and followed a group of medical interns at Sacred Heart Hospital. With its slapstick humour and surreal sequences (not to mention tugging at the heartstrings every now and then), the series quickly won audiences over. It aired for seven seasons on NBC and two seasons on ABC, with the final season featuring an almost entirely new cast. Scrubs starred Zach Braff as John Michael “JD” Dorian, Donald Faison as Christopher Turk, JD’s best friend, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, JD’s on-again/off-again love interest, John C. McGinley as Perry Cox, Ken Jenkins as Bob Kelso, Judy Reyes as Carlo Espinosa, and Neil Flynn as the Janitor.

Wolfs, sequel, George Clooney, Brad Pitt

According to Deadline, Apple has tapped Jon Watts to return to write, direct, and produce a sequel to Wolfs, the upcoming action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Apple has also switched up the release strategy for the film. Wolfs was originally slated to have a wide theatrical release before launching on Apple TV+, but it will now receive a limited theatrical release on September 20th before debuting on the streaming service on September 27th. The film is still slated to make its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which runs from August 28th to September 7th.

Wolfs is the kind of big event movie that makes Apple TV+ such an exceptional home for the best in entertainment,” said Matt Dentler, Apple Original Films’ Head of Features. “With George and Brad’s remarkable and engaging chemistry under Jon Watts’ extraordinary direction, ‘Wolfs’ blends all the great elements of comedy, action, and drama into a hugely entertaining movie that will leave audiences ready for what’s next. Releasing the movie to theaters before making it widely available to Apple TV+ customers brings the best of both worlds to audiences, and we’re excited to see fans embrace the movie as we start working with Jon on the sequel.

Wolfs finds Clooney and Pitt reuniting for the first time since Burn After Reading. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiralling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected.

Clooney actually mentioned a sequel to Wolfs last year while speaking with Deadline. “We’re already talking about a sequel for this film I did with Brad and Jon Watts,” Clooney said. “It was a great shoot and Jon is an extraordinarily talented guy who’s also really joyful. He loves what he does. We had a blast doing it and we’ve seen it. It’s an off the charts great film and it’s fun to work with Brad again. We had a really good time.

The Devil in the White City, Martin Scorsese

An adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been in the works for years (more on that later), but last we heard, Hulu had scrapped the limited series, which was slated to be executive-produced by Martin Scorsese. However, producer Stacey Sher told Deadline that the project is still in the works.

I’m still involved,” Sher said. “I never give up.” When asked if audiences could expect to see it sometime soon, Sher responded, “I mean, I hope so. It’s not imminent, but it is never ever far from my mind.” She also confirmed that Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, and Jennifer Davisson are “still involved” in the project.

The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.

The Devil in the White City was originally set up as a feature film with Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star. However, Hulu announced in 2019 that they would instead be developing The Devil in the White City as an eight-episode limited series. Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 4) signed on to star, with Todd Field (Tar) set to direct, but they both dropped out last year. Just prior to Hulu pulling the plug, it was reported that the producers were nearing deals with Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Dumbledore) to star in the series and were looking at Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) to direct.

Although the project has experienced more than a few bumps in the road, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will finally get made.

As for Scorsese, his next project could be the Jesus Christ movie he’s been developing. In an update earlier this year, the director said he was still in the process of figuring it out. “I’m contemplating it right now,” Scorsese said. “What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it.

Somehow, 10 years have already passed since the release of writer/director Jennifer Kent’s horror film The Babadook (watch it HERE) – and to mark the occasion, IFC Films is teaming up with Iconic Events Releasing to give the film a theatrical re-release on September 19th! Fans who attend this re-release will also get to see an exclusive Q&A with writer/director Jennifer Kent. Tickets will be available to purchase at THIS LINK as of August 14th. In the meantime, IFC Films and Iconic Events Releasing have put together a 10th anniversary re-release trailer, which can be seen in the embed above.

The Babadook has the following synopsis: Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel, a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

The film stars Essie Davis (True History of the Kelly Gang), newcomer Noah Wiseman, Hayley McElhinney (Doctor Doctor), Daniel Henshall (The Snowtown Murders), Barbara West (Breaker Morant), and Ben Winspear (Panic at Rock Island). An Australian production, it was produced by Kristina Ceyton and Kristian Moliere.

A press release provides the following information on Jennifer Kent: Jennifer Kent worked extensively as an actor in Australia before establishing her career as a writer/director. The Babadook premiered at Sundance in 2014, and received over 100 nominations and awards internationally. Jennifer’s second film, The Nightingale, won the Jury Prize and the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, as well as winning five Australian Academy (AACTA) Awards. Recently, she wrote and directed The Murmuring, an episode of the acclaimed Netflix anthology “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” She has three feature films in development as well as two TV series.

Interstellar, 70mm re-release, delay

It was announced earlier this year that Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar would return to theaters with a 70mm IMAX to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The release was initially slated for September 27th, but Variety reports that it has been pushed back to December 6th.

Variety was told by knowledgeable individuals that the delay was to better align with the home entertainment relaunch. Interstellar will be shown in 70mm IMAX prints as well as digital screens. Speaking of 70mm, there have been some rumours making the rounds that Paramount had destroyed their 70mm prints of Interstellar, but studio sources have denied it, claiming that they’ve archived more copies of the film than most others. Given their size, 70mm prints typically experience more wear and tear than the average movie during their theatrical runs. According to Variety, it’s not uncommon for them to be deemed unusable once returned to the studio.

The rumours claimed that Christopher Nolan was “furious” at Paramount for allegedly destroying the 70mm prints of Interstellar and even wanted to cancel the whole re-release after the studio refused to make new prints.

Interstellar was a big success upon its release ten years ago (bloody hell), earning largely positive reviews and grossing over $681 million. “In Earth’s future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable,” reads the synopsis. “Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth’s population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind’s new home.

The film has plenty of fans, including Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, who stated last year that he would have loved to have starred in it. “I adore Interstellar just because I find it so emotional. I remember seeing it in the cinema when I had little kids,” Murphy said. “It just had a big impact on me. It broke my heart. I love watching his films when I’m not in them because you don’t have to freak out about the size of your ears, or whatever.” The actor did say that Nolan had cast the “right people” in the movie.
