After partnering with Josh Safdie for the cinematic heart attack that is Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler is reteaming with the acclaimed director for his latest Netflix comedy special, Adam Sandler: Love You. Safdie’s Adam Sandler: Love You trailer finds the Sandman in good spirits as he returns to the stage for a fresh stand-up act. Adam Sandler: Love You premieres on August 27, 2024, globally on Netflix.

“You guys are the best! I love you! I need you! Help me,” Sandler shouts to a packed venue as he takes to the dimly lit stage in the Adam Sandler: Love You trailer. Sandler, forever the center of attention, finds himself signing jerseys backstage, tuning his guitar, and wondering how the f**k dog managed to steal his spotlight. As the footage plays, we find Sandler shredding away on his acoustic guitar, dedicating songs to audience members, and professing his love for the people who continue to support him.

Adam Sandler, Josh Safdie, Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, Dan Bulla, Carter Hambley, Brian Robinson, Joseph Vecsey, Judit Maull, Eli Thomas, and Perry Sachs produce Adam Sandler: Love You, with Barry Bernardi, Robert Digby, and John Irwin executive producing.

The new comedy special continues Sandler’s illustrious partnership with Netflix. He has starred in several global hit Netflix films, including LeoYou Are So Not Invited To My Bat MitzvahHustleMurder MysteryMurder Mystery 2Hubie Halloween, Sandy Wexler, The Week Of, The Do-Over, and The Ridiculous 6. Additionally, Happy Madison has produced Father of the Year, The Wrong Missy, and The Out-laws.

In addition to developing another feature film with Josh Safdie, Sandler is returning to the links for Happy Gilmore 2, a long-rumored sequel to the 1996 classic comedy. News about Happy Gilmore 2 comes from Sandler’s The Wedding Singer co-star Drew Barrymore, who said the sequel is happening on The Drew Barrymore Show. Plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 remain a mystery, with fans already speculating about returning characters and possible cameos. Will Happy Gilmore 2 be a hole-in-one so many years after the original’s release? We can’t wait to find out.

Army of the Dead Zack Snyder

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel called Planet of the Dead was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his Rebel Moon sci-fi movies – and The Wrap has revealed that Netflix “quietly canceled” plans for an Army of the Dead Universe.

In an article on the Rebel Moon films that features interviews with Snyder and his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder, The Wrap mentions, “Army of the Dead, a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before Rebel Moon, had a similarly ambitious (universe/franchise) plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works (one, the prequel Army of Thieves, was actually released), along with an animated series. The animated series was quietly canceled, along with plans for subsequent films. Zack said, “We are very ambitious with everything.” And Army of the Dead isn’t entirely dead, as Deborah pointed out that there will be a themed experience coming to the Six Flags theme parks this Halloween. “It’s going to be a really cool experience,” she added.

The Army of the Dead film took place after a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, where a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble: venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was supposed to serve as an “origin story” for Scott (Dave Bautista) and highlight his rescue crew’s efforts to protect all they love during the first phases of the mysterious zombie outbreak in Vegas.

Dave Bautista, Ana De La Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, and Ella Purnell all provided the voices of their Army of the Dead characters for the anime, and they were joined in the voice cast by Joe Manganiello, Christian Slater, Harry Lennix, Ross Butler, Anya Chalotra, Vanessa Hudgens, Yetide Badaki, Christina Wren, Monica Barbaro, Jena Malone, and Nolan North.

Speaking with Inverse in 2021, Snyder hinted that Matthias Schweighöfer may reprise his Army of Thieves and Army of the Dead role of Ludwig Dieter in Planet of the Dead, and that Schweighöfer’s Army of Thieves co-star Nathalie Emmanuel (as a character named Gwendoline) might get mixed up in the zombie action with him. He said (SPOILERS if you haven’t watched Army of the Dead): “The real adventure would be to see what happened to (Ludwig Dieter) when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.

But apparently we’re never going to hear the lines the Army of the Dead cast recorded for the Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas anime and won’t see Dieter and Gwendoline reunite in Planet of the Dead. Netflix decided the Army of the Dead Universe is already big enough.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Back in 1980, author Philip Nicholson, writing as A. J. Quinnell, introduced the world to a man named Creasy, an American-born former French Foreign Legion soldier, in the pages of his novel Man on Fire. While Creasy would return for four more novels – The Perfect Kill (1992), The Blue Ring (1993), Black Horn (1994), and Message From Hell (1996) – it’s Man on Fire that has received the most attention over the year, being turned into a film that starred Scott Glenn in 1987 and one that starred Denzel Washington in 2004. Now, Man on Fire is serving as the basis of a Netflix TV series that’s set to star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) as Creasey – and Variety reports that a guest star on the show will be Bobby Cannavale, who recently starred in the hit Netflix series The Watcher.

Cannavale is taking on the role of Paul Rayburn, an “ex-Special Forces soldier who possesses a unique ability to read people. He is charming, nurturing, and protective of those he cares for. Despite his warm, fatherly nature, his years of service in the field have given him an acute awareness of violence and human behavior. Quick-witted and incredibly intellectual, he is likely to have all the answers, and if not, he will find them.” Also in the cast is Billie Boullet, who played Anne Frank in the recent Nat Geo limited series A Small Light. Boullet’s character here is Poe Rayburn, who has “the lanky lines of someone growing at a rapid and confusing pace and the attitude that comes with it. She is unhappy about moving to Brazil because of her parent’s decision, spending her days with her wealthy international classmates until a tragic incident changes her perspective on family and life. As the only witness to a terrifying event, Poe quickly learns that her only ally is John Creasy.

Here’s the logline for the show: Once a high functioning and skilled Special Forces Mercenary, known for surviving even the most desolate of situations, Creasy (Mateen) is now plagued with intense PTSD. Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption. But, before he can adjust to this new life, he finds himself back in the fire, fighting harder than ever.

Kyle Killen (Fear Street) is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner – and if you’re a Quinnell fan who has seen enough of the Man on Fire story of the years, you might be glad to hear that Killen is working elements of the novel The Perfect Kill into this show as well.

Are you looking forward to the Man on Fire TV series? What do you think of the cast and the character descriptions? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
