Month: August 2024

Variety reports that Jack Black has assured fans that Tenacious D will return to the stage once again and that it will just take some time. Last month, following the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Kyle Gass would joke during a show that his birthday wish was “Don’t miss Trump next time.” This comment would cause Black to delay touring and put creative plans on hold.

As Black walked the carpet at the premiere of his upcoming film Borderlands, Black told Variety that Tenacious D will be touring again in due time. Black said,

We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.”

The comedic actor and musician was also asked if he had spoken to Gass during the time of the hiatus. Black replied, “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes… And we’ll be back when it feels right.” He would even show off the Pick of Destiny being worn that night, “Look what I wore today: I wore the Pick of Destiny. I love Tenacious D. It’s probably my favorite job, if you can call it that. It’s a work of art, it’s my baby.”

After Gass made his assassination joke, Black addressed his fanbase about the gaff on social media, saying, “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Gass also shared an Instagram post expressing his regret for the joke and apologizing for making light of the political violence, saying, “The line I improvised on-stage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”

The backlash to Gass’s poorly chosen words has been swift, with an Australian senator calling for the band to be deported. Tenacious D is supposed to play another week in Australia before heading to New Zealand, but Black announced today he’s canceling the tour, and “all creative plans” are on hold. According to reports“remaining tour dates and refunds will be provided at a later date.”

Patricia Arquette

Back in May, it was announced that Jodie Comer of Killing Eve and The Bikeriders had signed on to star in the latest film from writer/director Kenneth Branagh, a contemporary psychological thriller called The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. Production is now underway in the UK, and Deadline has learned that Comer is joined in the cast by Patricia Arquette (True Romance), Michael Sheen (Good Omens), Tom Bateman (Da Vinci’s Demons), Vicky McClure (Line of Duty), Michael Balogun (You Don’t Know Me), Kristina Tonteri-Young (Warrior Nun), Karla Crome (Carnival Row), Aiysha Hart (Atlantis), and Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones).

Details on the story Branagh has crafted for this film are being kept under wraps, and the same goes for any character details. The “contemporary psychological thriller” description is all we have to go on.

The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is being independently financed. The project reunites Branagh with his Belfast producers Tamar Thomas, Laura Berwick, and Becca Kovacik. Matthew Jenkins and Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau are also producers on the film.

It makes sense that the producers of Belfast would want to work with Branagh again, as that Branagh written and directed film earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Branagh took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Since wrapping his work on Belfast, Branagh has gone on to make two Agatha Christie adaptations, 2022’s Death on the Nile and 2023’s A Haunting in Venice. Those were follow-ups to his 2017 Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express, and he played Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in all three of the films. It remains to be see if Branagh intends to make any more Agatha Christie / Hercule Poirot films, or if the series is going to be left as a trilogy. While we wait to find out, we have The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde to look forward to.

Does The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde seem like an interesting project to you? What do you think of the cast Branagh has assembled for the film? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Borderlands

Video game adaptations have long been one of the hardest forms of media to adapt. So many duds have come along that most of us would be hard-pressed to fill one hand with “great” ones. Well, it seems as if Eli Roth’s adaptation of first-person shooter Borderlands is falling in the former, as a recent screening points to it being less clap and more trap…

Tuesday saw a special fan event for Borderlands in Los Angeles, with Roth, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more in attendance. Unfortunately, it looks as though the majority of the fans themselves wish they hadn’t come out to the TCL Chinese Theater, with the movie nowhere near living up to any hype from the footage shown at CinemaCon earlier this year. Check out some of the initial reactions to Borderlands below:

With Borderlands being slammed for pretty much everything when it comes to the senses, no doubt fans of the game aren’t only disappointed but borderline disgusted with the attempt here. The question is, will fans still turn out for it in theaters? Coming out while Deadpool & Wolverine is still at the top of the charts, the box office projection for Borderlands is around $10-20 million, or around a tenth of its reported budget.

Here are some more of the reactions to Borderlands out of its screening — these ones a bit more gentle in their criticism:

Here is the plot of Borderlands: “Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Kevin Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”

Will you be checking out Borderlands this weekend? Do the initial reactions have any play in whether you head to the theater or not?

henry cavill, deadpool wolverine

The actors who guest appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine are celebrating their participation with fans as the film undoubtedly becomes the movie of the year. Henry Cavill would also get in on the fun as he released an official look at his scene in the movie when he posted the above picture on his Instagram. Cavill cameos as the one Wolverine variant in a universe that is not played by Hugh Jackman. His post humorously pokes fun at his Justice League mustache debacle, saying, “To be safe, I shaved the moustache off for this one. Just the moustache.”

The Hollywood Reporter reports that director Shawn Levy revealed in an interview with The New York Times that Cavill would actually become ill while filming his short appearance in the movie. Levy says that Cavill, “Not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day. I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver.”

Levy added in the interview, “Can I please point out that Ryan brilliantly named Henry Cavill’s Logan ‘the Cavillrine’?” Cavill’s appearance is a play on multiple references. Some fans have entertained the notion that while Jackman may or may not be playing Wolverine til he’s 90, Henry Cavill has the chops to take over the role in the official MCU timeline. The cameo is also a dig at the DC drama, as this scene was conceived not long after it was announced that Cavill would not be returning as Superman in the now-defunct DCEU.

Levy explained, “In the case of Henry, it was not long after everything went down with DC and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman. Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to first of all cast Henry Cavill in a part that he would kick ass at, but also to poke fun at that other comic-book-founded movie studio and play with some self-awareness there.”

Confess Fletch

Fletch may have once lived but he is indeed now dead — or, the future of his movies are, at least. Greg Mottola, who resurrected the snarky private investigator (and Los Angeles Lakers’ #99) in 2022, has confirmed that the future of the character is as dead as a doornail, with no sequel planned for Confess, Fletch.

Posting to social media this week, Greg Mottola confirmed that the Fletch series will once again lay dormant, with the director having brought back the character — via Jon Hamm — more than 30 years after Fletch Lives. “Alas, the new head of Miramax, who controls the rights to all the books, shot down my sequel project. The Fletch curse got me.” Mottola is here referring to the numerous attempts to get the character back on the big screen, with various iterations involving Kevin Smith (easily the most vocal supporters of another Fletch), Bill Lawrence and more seeing differing levels of hope.

As for why we won’t see another Fletch movie, Mottola also wrote, “I was told “the first one lost money” — as if there had been any attempt to make money. Jon [Hamm] was very into the new script. I’ve been rather depressed about it, but hard to expect a good break in the feature world these days.” With this, he noted, “Well, feature comedy is having a rough time. I was okay with the idea of it probably being a streaming movie, but I was only going to do it my way.”

No investigation is needed to know that Mottola’s Confess, Fletch — based on the 1978 book of the same name — had a lot working against it. For one, Irwin Maurice Fletcher is hardly a household name; and for another — one likely more important to the studio — the movie went over schedule to the point where Jon Hamm and Greg Mottola both forfeited part of their salary to ensure the movie got done. Reviews ended up being quite strong but Confess, Fletch didn’t get much of a theatrical release, with it going more or less straight to VOD during the pandemic.

Would you like to see a sequel to Confess, Fletch? Why do you think the movie and character didn’t resonate with audiences?

It has been a decade since Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has explored television, but this year he will be leading the Apple TV+ miniseries Disclaimer. Now, years after first being announced, we have the teaser trailer for the project ahead of its October 11th premiere on the streaming service.

As we hear in the teaser for Disclaimer, Cate Blanchett’s character explains, “Beware of narrative and form. Their power can bring us closer to the truth,” before explaining just how they can be used against us. With striking visuals and music, this looks like yet another terrific entry from Apple TV+, who — like so much of their other programming — may not do a lot of advertising on but could end up being a critical favorite.

As per Apple, Disclaimer has the following plot: “Acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett) built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).”

Obviously Blanchett is a catch in any medium but it’s also incredible to see Kevin Kline doing anything, as that dude is an absolute treasure and is seen far too little. Also on that front, Kodi Smit-McPhee also hasn’t been delivering much since his Academy Award-nominated supporting turn in 2021’s The Power of the Dog. The cast also features Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) and Louis Partridge (Pistol) also star.

Alfonso Cuarón is certainly no stranger to popular streaming services, having worked with Netflix on 2018’s Roma, which earned him his second Best Director win, with the film also taking home Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. In addition to those, it also earned another seven nods. While there’s no direct correlation between streaming and major awards, with such prestige going on with Disclaimer, Cuarón and Apple could see themselves in the Emmy discussion if there is a strong enough campaign.

What did you think of the teaser for Apple’s Disclaimer? Will you be checking it out?

Deadpool & Wolverine, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Gambit, Elektra

Deadpool & Wolverine is full of cameos from decades of Marvel movies, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Channing Tatum as Gambit. It’s been nearly twenty years since Garner last played Elektra and Tatum never got the chance to play Gambit despite years of development, but the two actors put in the work to make sure they were ready to play the superheroes.

Jennifer Garner shared an Elektra training video on Instagram and explained how she became involved in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Garner said Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy got the ball rolling on the set of The Adam Project. “I remember the moment Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds had the idea for Elektra Natchios to show up in Deadpool 3 — we were on the set of The Adam Project and they gave each other this look they have that can communicate an idea, 20 pages of dialogue, nuclear codes — there is a crazy artistic kismet between those two.” Garner and her “bestie and OG stunt double” Shauna Duggins quickly started training to get “marvel fit.

Tatum posted his own training montage video, showcasing his hard work to master Gambit’s moves.

Taking place six years after the events of the last movie, Deadpool & Wolverine finds Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) toiling away in civilian life with his days as Deadpool behind him. But when his homeworld faces an existential threat, he must suit up once again and convince a reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to help save his universe. In addition to Reynolds and Jackman, the cast also includes Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Rob Delany, Stefan Kapičić, and more.

Our own Chris Bumbray had a lot of fun with Deadpool & Wolverine, which sounds like a real crowd-pleaser. “Have you ever been to a concert and wished that your favourite band would stop playing their not-as-good new stuff and play the hits? That’s exactly what Marvel is doing with Deadpool & Wolverine,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “After a rough run of movies, with many saying their Phase 5 has been disastrous, this feels like an everything but the kitchen-sink attempt by the company to win back those fans who feel alienated by the new direction the company seemed to be heading in. With this, you have a rock ‘em, sock ‘em thrill ride that delivers fans exactly the movie they wanted to see, with nary a message to be found amidst all the charred, sliced and diced corpses our heroes leave in their wake. It’s glorious fun.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s spoiler-free review right here, and don’t forget to let us know what you think of Deadpool & Wolverine as well!

Daisy Ridley, Graves' disease

Daisy Ridley has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease while speaking with Women’s Health.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to an overactive thyroid gland. The Star Wars actress said that she was diagnosed last September after experiencing some strange symptoms during the production of Magpie, a psychological thriller about a married couple who find their lives turned upside down.

I thought, ‘Well, I’ve just played a really stressful role; presumably that’s why I feel poorly,’” said Ridley. After experiencing symptoms which included a racing heart rate, weight loss, fatigue, and hand tremors, Ridley was encouraged to see an endocrinologist, who said that Graves’ can make one feel “tired but wired.” Ridley realized that she had also been feeling super irritable among her other symptoms. “It was funny, I was like ‘Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,’” she said, “but it turns out everything is functioning so quickly, you can’t chill out.

Since the diagnosis, Ridley has followed a routine of daily medication and a changed diet. While she’s been vegan for years, she has now decided to go gluten-free, as it is said to help with inflammation. “I am not super strict about it, but generally cutting down on gluten makes me feel better,” she said.

Ridley will soon be returning to the Star Wars franchise for a new movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The film takes place fifteen years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and finds Rey attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously teased the movie: “The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos — there’s even a question of how many exist anymore — and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.” The movie will launch the next chapter of the franchise, with Ridley even saying that it will take it in a “different direction.
