Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it HERE) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and sure enough, that’s exactly what the movie is. It’s set to receive a Paramount+ release in the U.S. and in select international markets on September 27th, with a digital release set for the same day. With that date just one month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Apartment 7A started out with an original screenplay written by Skylar James. Natalie Erika James and Christian White, who wrote the script for her feature debut Relic with her, performed their own rewrite of the script. Skylar James was a writer on the comedic Netflix series The Green Beret’s Guide to the Apocalypse, which was executive produced by Matt Damon and has never been released despite wrapping production in 2018.
The film stars Julia Garner of Ozark and has the following synopsis: When Terry Gionoffrio (Garner), a struggling, young dancer, suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple takes her into their home at a luxurious apartment building, the Bramford. Set in 1965 New York City, the film tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary moved in. The Hollywood Reporter gives some more information: When fellow resident and influential Broadway producer offers Terry another chance at fame, it seems that all her dreams are finally coming true. However, after an evening she can’t fully remember, disturbing circumstances soon have her second-guessing the sacrifices she’s willing to make for her career as she realizes that something evil is living not only in Apartment 7A but in the Bramford itself.
Vanity Fair reminds us that a young woman named Terry had been taken in by Rosemary’s neighbors Minnie and Roman Castevet in the original film. Terry (played in the original by Angela Dorian) crosses paths with Rosemary in the basement laundry room of The Bramford. Terry explains that the Castevets rescued her from homelessness and drug abuse, taking her into their lives and giving her free room and board.
Garner is joined in the cast by Dianne Wiest (The Lost Boys), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), Marli Siu (Anna and the Apocalypse), Andrew Buchan (All the Money in the World), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Wonka).
Paramount+’s Jeff Grossman provided this statement: “Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season. Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.“
Krasinski produced Apartment 7A with Allyson Seeger through their company Sunday Night Productions, while Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller produced through Platinum Dunes. Alexa Ginsburg oversaw the project for Sunday Night Productions, while Alex Ginno did the same for Platinum Dunes.

Smallville‘s Tom Welling stars in the new action thriller Mafia Wars from Saban Films. In the new trailer from the film, Welling is recruited for a dangerous undercover mission to stop a crime syndicate that has been plaguing the streets of Italy with Fentanyl and the head of this mafia wants to control all corners of the drug trade. Cam Gigandet also stars as the main villain in the film. Gigandet usually fills the shoes of antagonists in films like Never Back Down, 2016’s The Magnificent Seven remake and Silent Night.
The official plot synopsis reads, “Terry Jacobs (Tom Welling) is a recently paroled felon forced to go undercover to bring down Griff (Cam Gigandet), the head of the most infamous mob syndicate in Italy.” The film is rated R for strong violence, drug content, language throughout, and some sexual material/nudity. The cast list includes an ensemble that features Tom Welling, Cam Gigandet, Cher Cosenza, Chris Mullinax, Al Linea, Sidhartha Mallya, Alessia Alciati and introducing Sterling Griffin.
Mafia Wars is written and directed by Scott Windhauser. The producers on the film include Thomas Zambeck, Brian Katz, Emanuele Moretti, Sasha Yelaun, Robert Paschall Jr. The film is set to be available on digital and On Demand starting on October 11.
Welling’s hit WB show Smallville was a cultural milestone in the lore of Superman as the character got to be explored through the lens of a teen angst drama. Tom had originally started out as a model and soon transitioned to acting. He was in a few episodes of Judging Amy and small roles in other shows. Welling turned down the role of Clark Kent on Smallville twice because he felt that the idea sounded silly and was worried about being typecast. However, he was convinced after reading the pilot’s script. Tom Welling brought out the best part of Clark Kent: his innate goodness. He saw the best in people, even Lex. Much of the show had Clark struggling with his destiny. Trying to learn his origins and holding on to his humanity. Welling did a great job of portraying such a struggle. But, the relationship between the two friends kept viewers returning for more. Lex and Clark were tragically destined to be bitter enemies for all time.
Some of us got so caught up in the hype for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that we almost neglected to wonder where key characters from the 1988 original were. No, not Charles Deetz, who we knew was killed off from the trailer. We’re talking about the Maitlands, Adam and Barbara. So, is it strange and unusual that Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis didn’t return for the sequel? Beetlejuice director Tim Burton doesn’t think so.
Speaking with People, Tim Burton said that the Maitlands weren’t necessary for the story of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, noting that there was only so much fan service he would allow. “I think the thing was for me I didn’t want to just tick any boxes. So even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else.” Concerning what that is, Burton added, “A sequel like this, it really had to do with the time. That was my hook into it, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the nucleus of it. I couldn’t have made this personally back in 1989 or whatever.”
As far as who has returned for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton brought back Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, who is earning praise for her second go as Delia Deetz. Outside of Baldwin and Davis – whose absence is apparently explained in the sequel – it wouldn’t make any sense for any of the original’s supporting cast members to return, and, unfortunately, many – including Glenn Shadix (Otho) and Sylvia Sidney (Juno) – have since passed away.
But Tim Burton seems to have done just fine without the Maitlands, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is earning his highest praise in at least a decade. Our own Eric Walkuski wrote that this sequel is “an enjoyable, fast-paced bit of lunacy from Tim Burton that should please the many who’ve waited decades for its arrival.” And if that doesn’t do it for you, be sure to check out our interviews with O’Hara and newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and will hit theaters on September 6th.
