Month: August 2024

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th – and with that date just two weeks away, a clip has arrived online to give us a quick glimpse at a scene where Kay, the character played by Isabela Merced (Madame Web), finds herself in a terrifying situation. You can check it out in the embed above.

When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“

It has also been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Merced is joined in the cast by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has previously said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away. Graphic and gruesome is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

Pratt Guardians

Just as Peter Quill pressed play and danced to “Come and Get Your Love”, Chris Pratt is spreading some love of his own. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Pratt – who went on to play Quill throughout the trilogy, as well as the Holiday Special, two Avengers movies and Thor: Love and Thunder – showed his appreciation for his team, name dropping James Gunn in particular.

Taking to Instagram on August 1st, Chris Pratt wrote, “Today marks 10 YEARS since Guardians of the Galaxy hit the big screen. Can you believe it? What a journey it’s been. I love this cast, the crew and everyone involved. So grateful to the fans! You have changed my life. And to @jamesgunn who took a chance on the sweaty goofball from Parks and Rec, thanks dude.” The text accompanied several images and videos, including ones from the premiere and the movie itself.

Chris Pratt may not have seemed like an ideal choice for Guardians of the Galaxy, but then again, neither did Robert Downey, Jr. for Iron Man. But Pratt proved to be just about the best choice possible (certainly better than Joel Edgerton), leading the way to bring characters that were far from household names into an already well-established franchise and placing them near the top. Who knew a tiny tree would be such a pop culture phenomenon?

No doubt the Guardians trilogy stands as some of the highest-regarded movies in the entire MCU and certainly some of the funniest as well. And let’s not forget the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, which Chris Pratt highlighted in his tribute – and it couldn’t have been easy making  “Hooked on a Feeling” enjoyable!

But will the Guardians continue? Even though Pratt’s Quill left the group at the end of Vol. 3, those of the Guardians remained were cuing up to see what the future would bring. As Zoe Saldaña – who played Gamora in the series – said, “It would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy.” While we may not get a Vol. 4, hopefully they are recruited for the upcoming Avengers movies, which will see them facing off against RDJ’s Doctor Doom.

What is your favorite part of Guardians of the Galaxy? How would you rank the trilogy?

Until Dawn Peter Stormare

Earlier this year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn – and now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the great character actor Peter Stormare (Fargo, John Wick: Chapter 2) has joined the cast of the film to reprise the role he played in the video game, therapist Dr. Hill! Which makes sense, because if you’ve already had Stormare play a character, why replace him with someone else?

Stormare joins previously announced cast members Ella Rubin of The Idea of You and the upcoming Fear Street: Prom Queen, Odessa A’zion of the recent Hellraiser reboot and the sitcom Fam, Michael Cimino of Love, Victor and Annabelle Comes Home, and Ji-young Yoo of Expats and Smoking Tigers. His fellow new additions are Belmont Cameli of Along for the Ride and Saved by the Bell and Maia Mitchell of The Fosters and Good Trouble.

As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago mining cave-in that reverberates into the present day, the members of the group must fight through their fear if they all hope to make it through the night in one piece. The game proved to be a surprise hit with critics and received numerous gaming awards nominations.

Sandberg and Dauberman haven’t revealed what exactly will be going on in their movie version of Until Dawn, but the project is described as being an “R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast.” Dauberman’s script is a rewrite of a previous draft by Blair Butler, who wrote the vampire movie The Invitation.

Until Dawn is set up at Sony’s Screen Gems, where Dauberman has a first-look deal as part of the plan to “rebuild Screen Gems, Sony’s division focused on lower-budgeted fare, into a more productive label, with horror being a top focus.” Dauberman is producing the film through his company Coin Operated while Sandberg and Lotta Losten produce through their Mångata shingle. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are also producing. Ashley Brucks and Michael Bitar are overseeing the project for Screen Gems. Filming is expected to begin later this month.

Are you a fan of the Until Dawn video game, and are you glad to hear that Peter Stormare has made his way into the movie as well? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

For two seasons, Fallout star Ella Purnell had the lead in a drama series called Sweetbitter for Starz. Now she returns to Starz in another show with “Sweet” in the title, this one a six episode limited series called Sweetpea, which is set to premiere as a Starz original in the United States and Canada sometime this October. While we wait to hear a specific premiere date, a teaser trailer for Sweetpea has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

The short description of Sweetpea goes like this: “The girl everyone overlooks might just be able to get away with murder.” Here’s some more information: Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. So far, so shit. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge, and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret? The limited series is based on a novel by C.J. Skuse.

Purnell takes on the role of Rhiannon Lewis and is joined in the cast by Nicôle Lecky (Sense8), Jon Pointing (Big Boys), Calam Lynch (Dunkirk), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Tim Samuels (Empire of Light), Dino Kelly (Peaky Blinders), Lucy Heath (Trying), Alexander Bellinfantie (My Bloody Galentine), Elliot Cable (The Shamrock Spitfire), Jessica Brindle (EastEnders), Luke McGibney (Mystery Island), and Jessye Romeo (Pennyworth).

Sweetpea is coming our way from See-Saw Films and Fanboy, in association with Sky Studios. The series was written by executive producer Kirstie Swain, along with fellow writers Krissie Ducker, Laura Jayne Tunbridge, and Selina Lim. Ella Jones is director and executive producer.

Purnell provided the following statement: “I truly cannot wait for the world to meet Sweetpea! I’ve loved exploring this incredibly complex character, as well as working alongside our dynamic cast and powerhouses Ella Jones, Kristie Swain, and Patrick Walters (executive producer). This has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career so far. At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens. I hope audiences have as much fun going on Rhiannon Lewis’ wild, coming-of-rage journey as we did bringing it to life.

Radioactive is set to give the horror comedy The Red, a feature expansion of director Ryan Coonan’s 2014 short film Waterborne, a theatrical release across Australia and New Zealand on October 31st, with a press release also promising that the film will arrive in the United States sometime during “the spooky season.” We don’t have a date for any releases outside Australia and New Zealand, but we do have a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

At the heart of The Red is Rippy, the giant Zombie Kangaroo. “Rippy is your average bloke by day, and a terrifying Zombie Kangaroo by night.” Rippy is joined in the cast by Tess Haubrich (Wolf Creek season 2), Angie Milliken (MDA), and Michael Biehn (The Terminator), with Haubrich taking on the role of young police officer Maddy, who is determined to live up to her deceased father’s legacy. Her courage is put to the test when locals are found brutally ripped to shreds by the zombie kangaroo. As the undead beast leaves a trail of carnage, Maddy, with the help of her eccentric uncle Schmitty (Michael Biehn) and resilient aunt Donna (Angie Milliken), must embark on a high-stakes battle to save the town.

Aaron Pedersen (Mystery Road) is also in the cast. It’s worth noting that Haubrich and Biehn are both Alien franchise alums, as Haubrich had a role in Alien: Covenant and Biehn was, of course, in Aliens.

Coonan wrote the screenplay for The Red with Richard Barcaricchio, who was also his co-writer on Waterborne. Barcaricchio is producing the film with Judd Tilyard and Liz Tomkins of Dicentium Films and Jessica Butland of Radioactive Pictures. Brett Thornquest and Steven Matusko of Eclectik Vision are co-producing, while James Norrie and Nina Kolokouri of the sales firm Amp serve as executive producers. Toby Barron is providing the creature effects.

Butland provided the following statement: “This film is a wild ride from start to finish, delivering everything creature feature fans would expect from such an outrageous concept! It also delivers for mainstream audiences with its throwback to classic Aussie slang and pop culture.

Coonan lets us know, “The Red is a horror comedy film influenced by classic creature features such as The Thing, An American Werewolf in London, Jaws, and Razorback.
