The Office Carell

If ever there was an actor who could convince you he burned his foot on a George Foreman Grill, it’s Steve Carell. And while Michael Scott has several Dundies to his name, Carell never won a single Emmy for playing the beloved Dunder Mifflin boss, something that still bugs the cast of The Office.

There isn’t a whole lot that gets the Creed Bratton character worked up, but the actor (also Creed Bratton) remains dumbfounded that Steve Carell didn’t take home a Primetime Emmy for The Office despite six nominations. As he put it, “There were other people who were against him – there was no comparison. That’s a travesty. So that’s still a bone of contention. I’m chewing it, boys, I’m gnawing on it.” As for who Carell lost to, there’s Tony Shaloub for Monk, Ricky Gervais for Extras, Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock (twice), and Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory (twice). Bratton added, “The guy is a comedic genius, one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. You can ask anybody on the show.”

With his six nods for The Office, Steve Carell is actually one of the most nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, although the likes of Friends’ Matt LeBlanc, Roseanne’s John Goodman, Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, and Barney Miller’s Hal Linden all have longer losing streaks, having missed out seven times each. Notably, Carell has also been nominated in the drama category for The Morning Show.

But, really, awards don’t matter when all is said and done. What does is just how memorable a performance is, and no doubt Steve Carell made Michael Scott one of the most iconic comedy characters of the century and his absence from The Office after season seven was a major blow to the series.

A follow-up series to The Office titled The Paper is moving forward at Peacock, although Carell says he will have no involvement. As of now,  Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are attached.

Do you think Steve Carell deserved an Emmy for The Office? Are you surprised he never won one? Let us know below!

As Comic-Con subsides, the news in pop culture entertainment isn’t over, as Netflix has now released a teaser trailer announcing the commencement of their new-ish yearly event — Geeked Week. Today Netflix announced that its fourth annual Geeked Week celebration will take place the week of September 16, culminating with a live, in-person fan event in Atlanta on the evening of Thursday, September 19. This is the first time Geeked Week will bring together fandoms from series, film and games at a live fan event. Tickets for the event will be available for purchase on September 3.

The synopsis from Netflix about the event reads,
“Celebrating Netflix’s biggest global fandoms, Geeked Week will highlight Netflix’s most beloved Geeked titles. More details on the week of programming will be released in the coming weeks.”

The trailer shows a montage of clips from the stable of popular Netflix originals, which include Stranger Things, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Squid Game, Wednesday and more. Squid Game recently announced that it aims to conclude after season 3, but they did announce a date for season 2’s premiere. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk stated, “Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”

There will also likely be more updates of the remaining two seasons of the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was revealed this year that the series will take its cue from the animated show and end after the third season. The show is planning to follow a similar structure of the Nickelodeon series. The original’s narrative featured a story spread across three books that were told in three seasons. It was also reported that the show will switch things up for its remaining seasons as Albert Kim steps down as the showrunner. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers in the future. At the same time, Raisani was an executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor. Kim remains a part of the series as an executive producer for seasons two and three.

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer, and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. The film is now set to receive its domestic release on August 2nd – and in the build-up to that release, JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski was able to sit down for interviews with Josh Hartnett, Saleka Shyamalan, and M. Night Shyamalan! You can check them out in the video embedded above.

In these interviews, Hartnett talks about playing his homicidal character and the experience of working on the film with many extras; Saleka Shyamalan discusses composing several songs for the film; and M. Night Shyamalan talks about coming up with the idea, having fun writing the script, and what’s next for him.

Trap has a short and simple synopsis: A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.

For a better description, we turn to what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said about the first Trap trailer after seeing an early screening of it at CinemaCon, “Saleka plays a Taylor Swift-style pop star known as Lady Raven, with Josh Harnett’s character attending alongside his daughter. He quickly discovers that the concert is a trap designed to lure a serial killer known as The Butcher, but it turns out that Harnett is the serial killer!” We had previously heard (via FilmUpdates) that Saleka – who is an R&B singer/songwriter – plays “a popstar whose concert is at the heart of the story.” Hartnett’s character is “a father who takes his child to a concert, and unwittingly gets caught up in the surrounding events.” Saleka has recorded songs for her father’s previous projects Old and Servant, but this marks her acting debut. Hartnett has said that Trap is “very bizarre, very dark, and wild.”

Will you be catching Trap on the big screen this weekend? Take a look at the interviews, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

trap deadpool and wolverine

One of the horror movies I’ve been most curious about is M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. Ever since I caught footage of it at CinemaCon, I’ve been hooked by the compelling premise, in which Josh Hartnett plays a suburban dad attending a Taylor Swift-style concert doubling as an elaborate trap for an elusive serial killer. The twist is that HE is that serial killer. It promises to be a killer (pun intended) role for Hartnett, although the fact that WB’s not screening it for critics is giving me pause (a bit). Normally a movie like this would have no trouble topping the box office were it released on a quiet winter weekend, but it’s being used as counter-programming against Deadpool & Wolverine’s second weekend.

Following its record-breaking $205 million opening, the Marvel juggernaut seems primed to earn about $90-100 million this weekend. Given the A CinemaScore, I think $100 million (or maybe even a shade more) isn’t out of the question. However, the number two spot will be a big battle between Trap and Twisters. Word of mouth will either make or break Trap. On the high end, it could make $20 million and take second place, or it could fall off over the course of the weekend (if word of mouth is bad) and give Twisters, which looks to make around $18 million, a second place win. As it’s not screening for critics, I think there’s something about Trap the studio isn’t revealing that might throw a monkey wrench into its premise, so here are my predictions:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine: $100 Million
  2. Twisters: $18 million
  3. Trap: $15 million
  4. Despicable Me 4: $10 million
  5. Inside Out 2: $6.5 million

How do you think Deadpool & Wolverine will hold up this weekend? Let us know in the comments.
