Road House was a roundhouse on streaming, taking in 50 million viewers worldwide on Amazon Prime. Now, imagine if all of those people went to see it in the theaters and you’d have one of the biggest R-rated movies of the year. And that’s really how it should have turned out, as director Doug Liman always figured it would be going to the cinema. But Liman’s continued disagreement over MGM bypassing a theatrical release for Road House doesn’t just remain because of that – it also comes down to money in his own pocket.
As Doug Liman told IndieWire, by putting Road House on Amazon Prime, the studio screwed himself and a number of other key players – including star Jake Gyllenhaal – out of proper financial compensation. “My issue on Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated. Forget about the effect on the industry — 50 million people saw Road House — I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong.”
While the contractual stipulations for Road House aren’t exactly known, it’s quite possible that Liman, Gyllenhaal, Silver, and maybe even more expected to make some extra cash from the backend that would have come via a percentage of ticket sales. With no ticket sales on Amazon Prime, that leaves less money to dole out to the creatives. Gyllenhaal has taken a different stance on the issue, however, saying “Amazon was always clear” where the movie would end up. Regardless of where they’re both coming from, Gyllenhaal and even Liman are set to return for a sequel – presumably with more clear stipulations.
Interestingly, Doug Liman’s The Instigators premieres on Apple TV+ this weekend, although he has been much more copacetic with that streamer, as the heist movie was always intended to be housed there. “In the case of Apple, right from the beginning, we said we’re making this for streaming, our contracts compensated streaming, we’re all compensated for it being on streaming — there’s something called a streaming buyout — so Apple has been above-board from the beginning.”
Who do you think is at fault in the Road House theatrical vs. streaming debacle? Do you think it would have fared well on the big screen?

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. We saw a new trailer for the film during the San Diego Comic-Con, and now we’ve gotten our hands on a clip from the movie that gives a glimpse of a twisted transformation scene that was also teased in that trailer. You can check it out in the embed above – and it’s all thanks to a raccoon.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man. In the comic, The Crooked Man was an eighteenth-century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil. The film has been rated R for some violent content, language and nudity.
Hellboy is played this time around by Jack Kesy, who played Black Tom Cassidy in Deadpool 2. Kesy is joined in the cast by Jefferson White of Yellowstone as Tom Ferrell and Adeline Rudolph of the Netflix Resident Evil series as Bobbie Jo Song. According Hellboy.Fandom, Tom Ferrell is a character from the comic books who “was born around 1923 in the Appalachian mountains near the Hurricane (an area locals try to avoid) to a mother we know little of and his father, Charles E. Ferrel, who had a habit of drinking in the back woods. His early misadventures with witchcraft led to a self-imposed exodus.” Tales from the Collection adds that the story will introduce parapsychologist Bobbie Jo Song, who is tasked with delivering a spider to the BPRD but must seek Hellboy’s help when things go awry. Together, they travel to Appalachia to take on the Crooked Man, who has been sent back to Earth to collect souls for the devil.
Millennium Media producer Les Weldon told us this is “a true, dark, DARK, in the style of the comic book take on it. There’s no gloss that any of the other films had. There’s a methodical pace and a real creepiness to it.“

Now that Deadpool & Wolverine is out, the meta film is expected to cross the billion-dollar mark in a matter of days, but also, fans of the MCU now have slightly more lore in regards to the multiverse that the sequel has added. One new aspect is the notion of an “anchor being” in every universe that keeps it alive and stable. This past week also saw two big guns that Marvel Studios brought to Comic-Con. One, of course, is the big reveal of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the universe as Doctor Doom. The other is someone who is no stranger to the sci-fi culture world — Harrison Ford. Ford was happy to appear on stage for some fun hijinks with Anthony Mackie as well as hulking out now that Ford is revealed to be turning into Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World.
While Ford took interviews during his Comic-Con visit, the former Star Wars star would endure some Marvel-lore questions that left him quite clueless. According to Variety, ScreenRant would ask Ford, “Who do you think would be the anchor being of 616? The universe you are in.” Ford would be clearly and humorously baffled by the question. “616?” he asked. Then, he continued, “I am in universe 616? I am out of my orbit!” Ford, then, walked away in befuddlement and his reaction would go viral.
Ford is notorious for dryly dodging nerdy questions about his films, whether it be a serious annoyance or for jokes, but the Indiana Jones star would briefly speak candidly about enjoying his experience of working on Captain America: Brave New World. He would state, “It’s a whole different cut of cloth, isn’t it? Free of some normal constraints to the imagination. It’s delightful to deal with and it’s fun. The people I worked with were fantastic. The director, Julius Onah, did a terrific job. Mr. [Anthony] Mackie is great fun to work with. We had a good time. I enjoyed it.”
Ford takes over the role of “Thunderbolt” Ross, who is now the President, after the former actor, William Hurt, passed away. Anthony Mackie spoke about his difficulty in getting over being starstruck when acting opposite Ford, “I couldn’t remember my lines. He’s Harrison f*cking Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be. He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of shit.’ And everybody was like, ‘Yeah, let’s shoot this shit.’”
Longlegs star Nicolas Cage voiced the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir in the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and now he’s set to play the character in live-action for an upcoming MGM+ and Prime Video series that’s going by the title Spider-Noir. Yesterday, we got our hands on a batch of character breakdowns that gave a preview of some of the characters we’ll be seeing on this show – and now Deadline has broken the news that Abraham Popoola has been added to the cast. Popoola’s previous credits include Atlas, Morbius, Andor, The Curse, and The Marvels. On Spider-Noir, Popoola will be playing “a World War I veteran who is looking for an opportunity to get ahead.” Unfortunately, none of the character breakdowns we saw mentioned anyone being a World War I veteran, so we still don’t know exactly who Popoola’s character is.
We do know that Spider-Noir will see Cage taking on the role of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero. The show is expected to consist of eight 45 minute episodes. Cage has said, “One of the things that I like about this potential show is that it’s fantasy. It’s not really people beating people up. Monsters are involved.“
Cage’s character is Ben Reilly: A retired superhero with the powers of Spider-Man who is too old and broken, both figuratively and literally, to suit up the way he used to. Instead, he takes low-level PI cases and stays out of the ones that involve high-profile names, like that of the Mayor. Through flashbacks, we find out about his past heroics, and past failures, that led him to this point. He is charming, but weathered, and the pilot does an excellent job of setting him up for a good character arc moving forward.
Cage and Popoola are joined in the cast by Brendan Gleeson as the villain, Li Jun Li as a singer at a high-end nightclub, and Lamorne Morris as journalist Robbie Robertson.
Spider-Noir comes to us from Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel’s The Punisher), who will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Harry Bradbeer (Killing Eve) will direct and executive produce the first two episodes. Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series alongside Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, the team behind the Spider-Verse movies. Lord, Miller, and Pascal will also serve as executive producers on Spider-Noir.

Last month, we got a look at the trailer for the action thriller Duchess, the latest film from director Neil Marshall. Saban Films will be giving Duchess a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one week away, a pair of promotional clips have made their way online. They’re called the “Home Invasion” and “Garage Ambush” clips, and you can watch them right here in this article.
In the UK, Duchess will be getting a limited theatrical release on August 9th, and will then be available for digital download on the 12th.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.
Kirk is joined in the cast by Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon), Stephanie Beacham (Coronation Street), Colin Egglesfield (The Client List), Philip Winchester (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and Hoji Fortuna (Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake).
Kirk previously starred in Marshall’s films The Lair and The Reckoning. In addition to those, Marshall’s directing credits include Hellboy (2019), Centurion, Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers, a segment of the anthology Tales of Halloween, and episodes of Black Sails, Game of Thrones, Constantine, Hannibal, Timeless, Westworld, and Lost in Space.
Emily Corcoran and Kristyna Sellnerova produced Duchess for Cork Films. Marshall provided the following statement about the film: “The criminal underworld, and especially gangsters, have been staple movie fodder since movies were invented, and their popularity is as strong as ever. Just look at the success of movies such as Goodfellas, The Departed, Pulp Fiction, True Romance or tv series like Narcos, Ozark and Breaking Bad. The universal appeal of criminals and their nefarious endeavours shows no sign of wavering.Added to that, female driven action movies have also made their mark of late. Classic movies such as Kill Bill, Salt, Lucy, Hanna, Mad Max: Fury Road, Hunger Games, and Atomic Blonde have proved very popular with audiences, and characters such as Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor have become cinematic icons.Duchess, and Scarlett Monaghan, follows firmly in this tradition, and I think the reason Scarlett’s story resonates so strongly, particularly amongst women, is because she’s not a superhero or a spy, she’s a regular London girl just trying to survive in this crazy world. With Duchess, I wanted to create a British action crime thriller with international appeal. While its themes of love lost and revenge taken are universal, I decided early on in the development of the script that rather than go down the traditional route of East End gangsters and cockney swagger, I wanted to broaden its scope, not just in terms of its visual texture and style, but also its central story. I changed up drug deals for the more mysterious and somewhat enticing world of international diamond smuggling. Who isn’t drawn to the allure of a sparkling diamond? And instead of the rainy back streets of London I wanted to give this film a sun-baked and vibrant look. And of course, the movie is packed full of exciting and intense action sequences in the great tradition of films like Heat, The Untouchables and Scarface.Duchess is a fresh take on a genre we all love, and it’s a hell of a wild ride.”
Marshall is currently in post-production on Compulsion, which is said to be inspired by the old school erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s, like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Single White Female. Charlotte Kirk also stars in that film.
As I have said before, I think Dog Soldiers is one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, and that one guaranteed that I’ll always watch any movie Marshall happens to make. So I will definitely be watching Duchess.
