Zazie Beetz

Director Andy Muschietti and his producer / sister Barbara Muschietti, the filmmaking team behind Mama and the $1 billion grossing adaptations of Stephen King’s It, recently teamed up with Skydance to form a new horror label called Nocturna, and a couple months ago we learned the first project that will be coming out of the Nocturna partnership is called They Will Kill You. Zazie Beetz, whose credits include Joker, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2, has the lead role in this film – and now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that New Line Cinema has come on board to co-finance and distribute They Will Kill You.

Kirill Sokolov – who is said to be known for his dark sense of humor – will be directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Alex Litvak. Sokolov previously directed the action comedy No Looking Back and the comedic thriller Why Don’t You Just Die!, both of which were Russian productions. Litvak is best known for writing the 2010 Predator sequel Predators with Michael Finch. He went on to co-write Paul W.S. Anderson’s version of The Three Musketeers and the TV movie Secret Society of Second Born Royals.

They Will Kill You is aiming to start filming in South Africa in mid-September. Beetz will be taking on the role of a woman who answers a help-wanted ad to be a housekeeper in a mysterious New York City high-rise. She doesn’t realize she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years.

The Muschiettis are producing They Will Kill You alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Dan Kagan. Nocturna Co-Heads of Film, Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder, serve as executive producers with Sokolov, Litvak, and Carl Hampe.

When Nocturna was announced earlier this year, Dana Goldberg, Skydance’s chief creative officer, said: “Andy and Barbara are visionary filmmakers who have mastered the art of scary event movies that connect with global audiences, and David and I along with the entire Skydance team are thrilled to partner with them on the launch of Nocturna. It’s fitting that They Will Kill You will be our first project, as it perfectly encapsulates Nocturna’s mission of delivering unique and entertaining horror experiences that will live in the audiences’ nightmares for years.

doug liman, tom cruise

Doug Liman saw some success this year with his Road House remake despite dealing with the recent public revelation that he and Jake Gyllenhaal haven’t made their share off of Amazon’s decision to release the movie through streaming. Still, the film’s success has gotten both Gyllenhaal and Liman the greenlight to develop a sequel. Liman, however, has also been continuously inquired by fans if he would ever get around to making a sequel to the Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt Groundhog Day-esque, sci-fi war film Edge of Tomorrow, which is also sometimes referred to as Live, Die, Repeat.

As Liman promotes his new film, The Instigators, he sat down with The Hollywood Reporter, where he addressed that he is constantly coming up with ideas for Edge of Tomorrow 2, which may sport the title Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat. Liman stated, “No one has given up on it. The good and the bad news is that I’m so proud of that movie. I hadn’t watched it in years, but I’ve started rewatching it this year. I recently rewatched the movie with the studio. I’ve watched it with Tom Cruise. I’m going to rewatch it with Emily Blunt. So the good news is that I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s a really good movie,’ but the bad news is that I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s a really good movie. I only want to do a sequel if I can do it better.’ But I’m trying to do that, so there’s hardly a day that goes by that I don’t spend a little bit of time figuring out how to do it and do it better.”

It was recently reported that Liman needs to find a way over the hurdle of time travel‘s effect on the story as he recently told Collider,  “So I am spending time trying to crack it. On the flip side, time travel’s really tough. Like really, really tough. All you have to do is develop a movie with time travel to come to the conclusion that humans will never travel through time because it’s hard to figure out a third act in a movie with time travel. So I know for a fact humans are never going to travel through time but I am trying to crack it.“

THR would also inquire about the Space X film that Liman was announced to make with Cruise years ago. Naturally, if a production plans to film in space, there is a lot of preparation and logistics that go into it, and Liman also cites that Tom Cruise’s schedule is not one that allows for a quick pre-production. He explains, “Yeah, if you’re approaching Tom Cruise, you know how many things he has in the pipeline — and for good reason. He’s maybe the biggest movie star in the world. I also feel that movies happen when they happen for a reason. I’ve always felt that way. Some of my movies have happened exactly when I thought they would happen, and some of them have happened very much not when I thought they would happen. So I go in with that. There’s a reason we haven’t gone to space yet, and when we finally do and the movie comes out, I know I’ll look back at it and be like, ‘Thank God it didn’t happen earlier.’”

Rounders sequel

It’s not about how much you win, it’s about how much you can walk away from. And right now, Matt Damon may not want to be walking away at all, as he has expressed interest in doing a sequel to Rounders, even talking to Worm himself, Edward Norton, about the idea.

As he revealed on The Rich Eisen Show, Matt Damon said that a Rounders sequel is one that has been in the cards off and on since its release in 1998. “The one we’ve been talking about for years, and we’re trying to, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, like all of us want to do it is a second Rounders movie. So much has happened in the poker world in the last 25 years, it would be fun to catch up with those guys.”

As for a plot to the sequel, Damon said Rounders writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman “had a whole movie ready to go then, but now there’s been a whole other change in the poker world since then, so I haven’t talked to them about what it would be, but I know…what they had 10 years ago was fantastic, and I’m sure they could augment and kind of roll with the times and update it to where we are today and make something great.” Outside of the Ocean’s and Bourne movies, Matt Damon has actually rarely appeared in a sequel, although we’re still not against Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.

A Rounders sequel could indeed explore quite a bit, especially as it’s left open how Mike did at the World Series of Poker, whatever became of Worm and just how many cavities Teddy KGB got from all those Oreos. But it still might take some time to get Rounders 2 to the table, as current holdups on the project include figuring out exactly who owns the rights and how proper compensation could be given to those working on the film.

What do you think of a Rounders sequel? What would it have to cover now that it has been over 25 years since the original? Deal us your thoughts in the comments section below.
