The Crow, reboot

Lionsgate has released a new version of The Crow onto the big screen (you can read our 6/10 review of the film at THIS LINK and see how we thinks it compares to other Crow movies HERE) – and its opening weekend box office was so underwhelming, it’s probably not going to stick around in theatres for very long. So it’s no surprise to see that Amazon is already accepting pre-orders for the film’s 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD releases, complete with an image of the 4K set, even though a home video release date hasn’t yet been announced. You can check out Amazon’s listing of the 4K right HERE.

We had previously been referring to this project as a remake, but Lionsgate recently let it be known that this is not to be called a remake, but rather a new adaptation of the source material, the comic book series created by James O’Barr. Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directed this version of The Crow, working from a screenplay by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard). The film is produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman. Dan Farah serves as executive producer. Here’s the synopsis: Soulmates Eric (Bill Skarsgard) and Shelly (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

Bill Skarsgard (Boy Kills World) and singer FKA Twigs are joined in the cast by Danny Huston (Yellowstone), who plays the lead villain, as well as David Bowles (Brothers), Isabella Wei (1899), Laura Birn (A Walk Among the Tombstones), Sami Bouajila (The Bouncer), and Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders).

Based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr, the first version of The Crow was released in 1994. Following the production of three sequels (each about a different resurrected character), a redux was first announced in late 2008… then it had to make a long journey through development hell. Several screenwriters came and went, scripts were written and scrapped, studios went bankrupt, and directors like Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Corin Hardy, and Francisco Javier Gutiérrez were all involved along the way. Actors up for the lead role during the long development period included Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Jason Momoa, and Jack Huston.

Trap

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer, and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka, and the finished film was given a theatrical release internationally on July 31st, with a domestic release following on August 2nd. (You can read our review HERE). In the weeks since its release, Trap has racked up over $70 million at the global box office… and now it’s time for it to come home. Coming Soon reports that Trap will be given a digital release this Friday, August 30th.

Trap has a short and simple synopsis: A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.

Since Shyamalan produces and finances his own movies, he was able to get a SAG interim agreement for Trap (which filmed under the codename Good Grades) that allowed the project to go into production before the Screen Actors Guild strike wrapped up. His daughter Ishana was also able to get a SAG Interim deal for her feature directorial debut, the gothic fairy tale The Watchers. That film was set up at Warner Bros. as well, and was released in June.

According to Coming Soon, “Beginning August 30, Trap will be available for Premium Digital Ownership at home and for 48-hour rental on participating digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango At Home, and more. Later in the year, Trap will release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD, with the Trap 4K and Blu-ray release date officially set for November 5, 2024.

The 4K and Blu-ray release will include the following extras: – Setting the Trap: A New M. Night Shayamalan Experience – Saleka as Lady Raven – Deleted Scenes – Cooper Gets Stopped by SWAT – Riley Shows Lady Raven Her Room – Cooper Takes a Hostage and Slips Away – Extended Concert Scene: Where Did She Go

Did you catch Trap on the big screen? Will you be checking the movie out when it gets a digital release at the end of this week? Let us know by leaving a comment below – and if you have already seen the movie, let us know by leaving a comment below.

A red band teaser trailer gives a preview of some bloody action from writer/director Macon Blair's remake of The Toxic Avenger

Last September, people finally got to see a bit of Macon Blair’s remake of the famous Troma film The Toxic Avenger. The original is a cult classic that puts an over-the-top, irreverent, graphically violent spin on the superhero franchise and the remake aimed to keep the spirit of the Lloyd Kaufman original. This new incarnation would also sport an impressive cast with The Thicket‘s Peter Dinklage. He’s also joined by Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood, who portray the big baddies in the film.

However, after the release of the Red Band trailer, there has been no word on a release as the studio behind it doesn’t deem it releasable with its straddling the very fine line of commercial and cult appeal. The status of the film appears to have it in limbo at the moment, but the movie’s lead, Peter Dinklage, is optimistic that it will eventually find its way to theaters. The Hollywood Reporter shares Dinklage’s optimism as he told ComicBook.com,

No, I’m not a producer on it. I don’t know. I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket … He’s incredible. He’s one of my favorite people and favorite artists. So hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun.”

Blair’s version of The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-X health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for. After deciding to take matters into his own hands and rob his company, Winston falls into a pit of toxic waste and is transformed into a deformed monster that sets out to do good and get back at all the people who have wronged him.

Dinklage is joined in the cast by Kevin Bacon as villainous corporate overlord Bob Garbinger; Elijah Wood as Bob’s brother Fritz Garbinger, who is described as “sort of Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Danny DeVito Penguin mixed together”; a group of lunatics / musicians called the Killer Nutz, who are “a rock and roll group where their presentation is theatrical evil, like KISS or Alice Cooper, but their moonlight gig is professional assassins”; Taylour Paige as investigative reporter / vigilante detective JJ Doherty; Jacob Tremblay as Winston’s stepson Wade; Jonny Coyne as a “shadowy criminal figure”; Sarah Niles as a “corrupt city official”; Julia Davis as an unspecified character; and Blair as a guy named Dennis.

The Toxic Avenger remake was filmed in Bulgaria. Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz produced with Legendary Entertainment. The film has received an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity“ – and the gore includes a moment that has been referred to as “the butt guts scene“.

jared leto tron

Coming a full 15 years after Tron: Legacy, next year’s Ares stands as one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. We still have well over a year before it hits the big screen, but Jared Leto is already hype for the Tron sequel, taking to Disneyland to ride the Tron Lightcycle / Run.

In a new Instagram post, Leto – who at the time was in Florida for a couple of stops on 30 Seconds to Mars’ Seasons Tour – is seen approaching the Tron ride and declaring, “We gotta go, we gotta do this, man. Holy sh*t! I feel like I’m home!” He also insisted on being on the front cycle, something fans of the ride say is well worth the wait. Judging by the clip, Leto had a pretty damn good time, although some followers did rib him for not taking his grip off the handlebars.

If you, unlike Jared Leto, have yet to ride Tron Lightcycle / Run, Disney has the following synopsis: “Climb aboard your very own Lightcycle and take off on a high-speed adventure, racing against the Grid’s most menacing Programs. Surge past your fierce opponents as you attempt to cross through 8 Energy Gates and secure your team’s victory.”

Jared Leto is one of many new cast members for Tron: Ares, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, and more joining for the sequel. Leto plays the movie’s title character, “who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” Leto also serves as a producer, although apparently didn’t pitch hard enough to have Thirty Seconds to Mars score Tron: Ares, as Nine Inch Nails will take on composer duties.

2010’s Tron: Legacy took in $400 million worldwide, proving to be one of the biggest hits of the year.

The first iteration of the Tron Lightcycle ride opened in Shanghai Disneyland back in 2016, while the Magic Kingdom version debuted just last year.

Have you tried out the Tron Lightcycle ride at Disneyland? Where does it rank for movie tie-in rides? Drop your take in the comments section below!

Three billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997. But on August 29th, 2024, Netflix will make sure you don’t pull the plug. Ahead of its release later this year, Netflix has dropped the red band trailer for Terminator Zero, an anime series that expands on the universe set in place by James Cameron 40 years ago. And yes, it explores the dangers of AI…just like he warned us about!

With a lot of violence and blood – along with a nod or two to the Terminator franchise – this red band trailer further makes Terminator Zero a must-see series. This the latest push by Netflix for Terminator Zero, which consists of eight episodes, all of which will be released on the premiere date. Just last week, they unveiled the first six minutes just last week.

Here is the official synopsis of Terminator Zero: “2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity. Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”

The voice cast for Terminator Zero includes Timothy Olyphant as The Terminator, Rosario Dawson as an AI named Kokoro, Ann Dowd as The Resistance’s leader, André Holland as an AI-developing scientist, and Sonoya Mizuno as a woman sent from the future to protect against the dangerous technology.

Although James Cameron has no involvement with Terminator Zero, he did lend his support to the show, saying he thinks it’s interesting how Mattson Tomlin and his team went back to the Judgment Day angle as a key inspiration.

What do you think of the red band trailer for Terminator Zero? Will you be binging the series when it hits Netflix on August 29th?

Denzel Washington

With a career spanning more than 40 years, nine Oscar nominations (a record for a Black actor) and a potential hit with Gladiator II, what else is left for Denzel Washington to accomplish on the big screen? As it turns out, maybe not so much after all, as the actor has indicated that he could possibly be nearing retirement as he nears 70.

Speaking with Empire as part of their new cover story for Gladiator II – in which he plays Macrinus, a broker who wants to take over Rome – Denzel Washington said that at this point in his career, he really needs to find a compelling project to even consider signing on. “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley…He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration. We should all want to feel like that at 86.” Scott has also said that Gladiator II ranks among the best films he has ever made.

Gladiator II – which is due out in November – is only the second time Denzel Washington has worked with Ridley Scott, having previously been directed by him in 2007’s American Gangster. Instead, Washington leaned more into collaborations with Scott’s younger brother Tony, working with him five times, beginning with 1995’s Crimson Tide and culminating with 2010’s Unstoppable, which ended up being Tony. As for how the English brothers stack up against each other, Washington wasn’t going to give the glory to any one man. “I don’t compare directors. You see the different personalities. I suppose they do [have similarities]. On the days when we’re shooting, I’m busy with what I’m doing. So I’m not comparing this one to that one, but obviously both are great filmmakers. They can’t miss.”

As far as which projects might pique his interest, Denzel Washington is signed on to lead Spike Lee’s remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, which will mark the fifth collaboration between the two.

Denzel Washington’s comments call to mind Nicolas Cage’s, who also said he thinks he only has a handful of lead roles left in him. Now that pairing would be an interesting dynamic on the screen…

The box office numbers are starting to roll in, and the weekend gross for the controversial reboot of The Crow could not be worse. At the moment, ComScore has the film in eighth place for the weekend, with a $4.6 million gross and a shocking per-screen average of just over $1.6k. No matter how bad the box office outlook for the movie was in the lead-up to its opening weekend, no one thought it would crash and burn this badly. In our predictions, we figured it would open with $7 million and at least finish in the top 5, but it was not meant to be.

This is a disastrous result for Lionsgate, with it following hot on the heels of their mega-flop Borderlands. These two would-be franchise starters not only posted terrible grosses, but Borderlands was despised by audiences too, with it posting a rare D+ CinemsScore. At least as far as audience reaction goes, The Crow is doing better, with a B-minus score, proving that at least some viewers are liking it (our own readers seemed pleasantly surprised by the film).

Otherwise, it was a pretty quiet weekend at the box office, with Deadpool & Wolverine recapturing the top spot from Alien: Romulus with an $18.3 million gross. Last week’s champ, Alien: Romulus, fell 61% $16.2 million in second place. With a $72 million gross, the movie has a good chance of potentially passing the $100 million mark domestically, which is a fair result and should lead to more modestly budgeted Alien movies being greenlit. The Blake Lively drama, It Ends With Us continued to post hefty grosses, with an $11.8 million weekend and a $120 million plus running gross. This has been a real word of mouth hit, and it should end up grossing at least $150 million domestically (or perhaps even more).

The weekend’s other new release, Blink Twice, directed by Zoe Kravitz and stars Channing Tatum, had a modest opening, with a $7.3 million gross. With a B-minus CinemaScore, this one will likely drop off a lot in the weeks to come, but given that it’s an AmazonMGM release, it will hit streaming before too long and should generate some decent buzz, as it’s actually not a bad little movie.

The faith-based film, The Forge, had a solid $6.6 million opening. Coming from The Kendrick Brothers, it’s a spin-off of their ultra-successful film, War Room, although its weekend gross was comparatively modest. However, with an A+ CinemaScore, this could have some staying power at the box office.

twisters

Meanwhile, Universal’s Twisters continued to perform well, grossing $6.2 million for a $248 million total. The anniversary re-release of Coraline has proven to be a blockbuster, with it earning just over $5 million for a $24 million gross. Finally, the chart was rounded out by the two biggest animated hits of the summer, Despicable Me 4, which added $4.4 million to its $348 million gross, while Inside Out 2 added $2.1 million to its massive $646 million domestic gross.

Next weekend promises to be one of the slowest in recent memory, with Dennis Quaid’s Reagan the only wide release. Do you think Deadpool & Wolverine will continue to hold the top spot? And what do you make of The Crow’s box office performance? Let us know in the comments!

Oasis

Anyway, here’s “Wonderwall”…and every other one of their hits, as Oasis may be getting back together. Or, at least, that’s what some might say based on a recent social media post by lead singer Liam Gallagher.

Gallagher took to X to respond to a user who took a dig at both Liam and older brother Noah amid rumors that Oasis could be hitting the stage next year. After the user called the brothers a “pair of melts” (British slang for wimps), Liam wrote – in typical Liam Gallagher fashion – “See you down the front ya big fanny kiss kiss x.”

Reports had previously come out suggesting that Oasis could reform for shows at London’s famed Wembley Stadium and Manchester’s Heaton Park. If confirmed, this would be one of the most supersonic reunions in recent memory, as it has been just over 15 years to the day that Oasis played their “final” show, performing at Weston Park in Staffordshire, England on August 22nd, 2009. That show, which was part of their Dig Out Your Soul Tour, closed with a cover of The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus.” An announcement would also coincide with the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Definitely, Maybe.

The ongoing feud between Liam and Noel Gallagher was pretty much the sole reason Oasis couldn’t live forever. Despite a series of hits in the ‘90s and a massive following that stuck by through the ups, downs and fistfights, Oasis almost always felt like they were on the verge of splitting. By their own admission, the Gallaghers have always been going at it, something that only escalated as their fame grew. As such, their behavior was part of what made Oasis who they were. Sure, excitement grew with each concert, but there was also anticipation in wondering if one of the boys would just straight-up not show – hey, you can only have a tambourine thrown at your head so many times.

So, have the boys patched things up, even temporarily? We’ll have to wait and see if an official announcement comes, but if so, let’s hope Oasis launches a tour that takes them all around the world.
