Longlegs

Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, reached theatres back on July 12th (JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the movie a 9/10 review you can read at THIS LINK), and during its theatrical run it has managed to earn over $100 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest independent film release of 2024 and the top grossing R-rated horror film of 2024. Now, it’s time for Longlegs to come home. The film will be receiving a digital release tomorrow, August 23rd, and the digital version is available to pre-order on Amazon right HERE.

Maika Monroe (It Follows), Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Alicia Witt (Urban Legend), and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) star in the film. The story Perkins crafted for the film has been described as being “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Monroe takes on the role of FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.

Cage has said (while speaking to John Carpenter) the film is about “a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto, who’s making these dolls”. Production took place in Vancouver, Canada. Cage produced Longlegs through his company Saturn Films, which recently had success with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Pig. Other producers were Dan Kagan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan, and Chris Ferguson. Jason Cloth and Fred Berger of Automatik served as executive producers with John Friedberg of Black Bear.

In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs. His next film is the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming to theatres on February 21st.

Guillermo del toro

We may never see Guillermo del Toro give us his take on The Haunted Mansion but that doesn’t mean he has shirt entirely away from them — that is, until he got spooked by one while filming. While shooting the upcoming Frankenstein in Scotland, del Toro took residence in an old hotel that gave him the willies to the point where he couldn’t stand staying there.

As he posted on X this week, Guillermo del Toro set up what he may have in store as filming on Frankenstein continues. “Whilst in Aberdeen, I am staying in an old 1800’s hotel.  i am in the Most Haunted room of it- which was vacated this morning by one of our producers.  Odd electrical and physical occurences scared her into leaving asap.  Stay tuned- if anything happens I will report.”

Making good on his word, Guillermo del Toro said that he will no longer be sleeping in the hotel. “UPDATE-. I can only say:. Nothingbhas happened yet, but the atmosphere in the room is opressive and I am not gonna spend much more time there.  It may be suggestion, but at this point I kept it but am sleeping in another room- I need 6 hours of sleep to have a good shooting day- Im stopping there early and late in the day- but something is in that room with me…  If anything happens or Nothing does expect one or two more updates.”

Guillermo del Toro also noted that while he does try to stay in “the most haunted rooms” every time he’s away, he rarely gets creeped out. So for a guy who seeks this sort of things out and who has a second house (the appropriately titled Bleak House) whose sole purpose is to show off a collection of horror and sci-fi memorabilia, this hotel must really have some aura!

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein stars Jacob Elordi as the Monster and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, with a cast of Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Ralph Ineson, and more helping round out the cast.

Black Mirror

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2025 – and while episodes of the show have branched out into different genres as it has gone along, during an interview with Deadline, series creator Charlie Brooker said that the episodes of Black Mirror season 7 will be like the “OG Black Mirror.”

Brooker said, “We’re doing some things we’ve not done before. People can expect quite a lot of emotion and, hopefully, a good mix of chills. We did a couple of horror stories in Season 6, which we label as Red Mirror. But this time around, the episodes are all, in a way, like OG Black Mirror. I wrote one script, and the general consensus was that it was one of the bleakest, heaviest gut punches yet. There’s also techy episodes and ones that are making people cry. So, hopefully, it’s a full emotional workout, but we shall see. The viewers will be the judge.

Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister! We even have a short synopsis for that one: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.“ Directed by Toby Haynes from a script written by William Bridges and Brooker, the season 4 USS Callister episode told the story of a gaming company’s CTO. He is the mastermind behind a popular multiplayer game and has a private copy of it, which he uses to torment his colleagues who fail to show him respect in the office. The episode had a running time of 76 minutes and starred Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, Paul G. Raymond, Hammed Animashaun, Tom Mulheron, and Aaron Paul.

Created and written by Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us.

Coming our way from the Broke & Bones production company, Black Mirror season 7 is being executive produced by Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, and Annabel Jones.
