criminal record, season 2, apple tv+

Variety is reporting that Apple TV+ has renewed the detective drama Criminal Record for a second season. The British crime show features former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi as Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty and The Good Wife star Cush Jumbo as Detective Sergeant June Lenker. Criminal Record is set in contemporary London, and the plot of the show is about two brilliant detectives who are working a case but end up clashing as they investigate a complex murder. The series was created by Paul Rutman, who was known for the British drama series Vera.

The official synopsis for the upcoming season of the show reads,
“In Season 2, June Lenker is the senior officer on the scene when a political rally is attacked by far-right counter-protesters. The violent clash leaves a young man dead and June, consumed with guilt, is desperate to bring the unknown killer to justice. It seems as if her best hope is Daniel Hegarty, now a key figure in the shadowy world of police intelligence. He may have the answers she needs but to get his help she will have to accept a dangerous bargain.”

Reviews for the first season were stellar as it received a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lili Loofbourow of the Washington Post said in her review, “Jumbo and Capaldi are powerhouses and the crackle of their work together here, much of which they refused to rehearse in advance, elevates a relatively simple question into something much murkier that could, at least in theory, allow for nuance.” Variety’s own review stated that the first season was “captivating and deeply disturbing” series that offers a “thrilling and uncomfortable assessment of modern-day racism in the U.K.”

Criminal Record is shot on location in London. The drama series is produced for Apple TV+ by Tod Productions and STV Studios. The Executive producers on board for Season 2 will include the show’s creator, Paul Rutman, as well as stars Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, alongside Elaine Collins, whose credits include Shetland, and Chris Sussman, known for his work on the project Trying.

After a five season run of playing Norman Bates on the TV series Bates Motel, Freddie Highmore moved on to playing the character Shaun Murphy on seven seasons of The Good Doctor – and now that The Good Doctor has wrapped up, Highmore has signed on for his next TV series gig. Deadline reports that Highmore is set to star in the Prime Video series The Assassin alongside Keeley Hawes, whose credits include Orphan Black: Echoes and Line of Duty.

Coming from the minds of Harry and Jack Williams, the creators of The Missing and its spinoff Baptiste, The Assassin will tell the following story: Secluded on a remote Greek island, retired assassin Julie (Hawes) has a somewhat thorny reunion with her estranged son, Edward (Highmore), visiting from England. Armed with questions around new information on his paternity, Edward battles to find the right time to speak to his frustratingly distant mother. But, when the moment finally presents itself, things take a deadly turn as Julie’s dangerous past catches up with her and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run together. Edward’s quest for truth clashes with Julie’s secrecy whilst they are forced to work together in a fight for survival, testing their dysfunctional relationship to its limits. Amid uncovering a dark conspiracy they believe to be their only threat, a greater danger emerges that will destroy their relationship entirely. In a race against time, Julie fights to save Edward and salvage their relationship as past and present collide in a showdown across the globe.

The show will consist of six hour-long episodes. Hawes and Highmore are joined in the cast by Gina Gershon (Riverdale), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist), Jack Davenport (The Morning Show), Alan Dale (Dynasty) Gerald Kyd (The Swarm), Devon Terrell (Totally Completely Fine), Richard Dormer (Blue Lights), and David Dencik (The Ipcress File).

The Williams’ production company Two Brothers Pictures is producing The Assassin, in association with ZDF, All3Media International, and Stan. Hawes and Highmore serve as executive producers.

Hannah Blyth, Head of TV for Prime Video UK, said: “From the moment Harry and Jack shared their vision for The Assassin, we knew that it would resonate perfectly with our audience. The Assassin promises to deliver a high-stakes thriller with a dynamic mother-son relationship at its core, packed with twists and turns that will keep our audience hooked from start to finish. We can’t wait for our customers to immerse themselves in this gripping new series.

Michael keaton

You wanna get nuts? Then tell Michael Keaton he had a comeback in 2014. Keaton may not have been the premiere player he used to be before being cast in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman but he was far from being past due. After all, he was a part of the Toy Story franchise and was getting consistent work elsewhere. So when people say Birdman was his comeback role, he thinks you can buzz off.

As Michael Keaton told GQ, Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (full title) was always being positioned as some sort of return to glory for the actor. “A really, really, really smart guy, a guy I liked a lot, said, ‘Comeback—that’s the story.’ I went, ‘Honestly, it’s kind of bullsh*t.’” He added that while he could have played along it would have come across as phony. “I thought I could make that story up, but I knew I’m going to be bullsh*tting every time I talk about it. By the way, I know business. I like business. Doesn’t bother me. You go, ‘This is a business, man.’”

For the most part, Michael Keaton has had at least one movie out each year since he truly broke out with 1982’s Night Shift. After Beetlejuice and pair of Batman movies, the guy was on top of Hollywood. But as with pretty much everybody in the business, that wouldn’t always hold. But Keaton kept his composure even amid cool streaks, saying, “I never panic. If you get desperate, you’re f*cked. Don’t ever get desperate. You can get insecure and nervous, and go, ‘Wow, boy, I’m not doing so great right now.’ But when you get desperate, you’re dead.”

But let’s face it, it’s still easy to say that Birdman was in fact a comeback role for Michael Keaton, whose mirroring career to his character was not lost on the audience. For his turn as an actor known for playing a superhero who had faded from the public eye (see?), Keaton finally earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Although he lost to Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything — showing just how easily the Academy is prone to vote for the biopic performance — Birdman gave Michael Keaton that second push that found him joining the Spider-Man universe, Best Picture winner Spotlight and more. And now, Keaton Keaton is going back to one of his classics yet again, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice set for release next month.

Do you think Birdman was a true “comeback” for Michael Keaton or is that not fair?

wesley snipes, ryan reynolds, blade

Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of the Blade property has been making its way through development hell for the last five years, and if / when the script for that project is ever figured out and the new Blade can go into production, Mahershala Ali will be taking over the title role… but Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds thinks Marvel should go in a different direction with the character. After the spoiler veil was lifted and Reynolds could acknowledge that Wesley Snipes makes an appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, returning to the role for the first time since his trilogy of Blade films wrapped up twenty years ago, the actor took to social media to call for Marvel to give Snipes’ Blade “a Logan-like send-off.” And he’s not letting his request get brushed aside. Last night, Reynolds again took to social media to push for a new Blade movie starring Wesley Snipes.

This time, Reynolds wrote, “The reaction when Wesley Snipes enters the movie is the most intense thing l’ve heard in a theater. People screaming with uninhibited joy and love is also the sound of a legacy. More Blade please. #DayWalker.” He later went back and edited his post to add a P.S.: “A Logan-style send off, specifically.

Reynolds is stirring up a lot of fan support for the idea of a Blade sequel starring Wesley Snipes… which leaves one to wonder, what does Mahershala Ali think about this campaign? It has been said that he’s getting increasingly frustrated that they can’t get his Blade movie into production, now fans are pushing for an entirely different Blade project that he wouldn’t have the lead role in.

Snipes himself has shown support for the Blade reboot. He recently told Entertainment Weekly, “I shouted (Ali) out, told him he’s got all my blessings and support. I even referenced the fact that some of the challenges they’re facing now with the project, it shouldn’t be accredited to him. It’s not the actor’s fault. There’s a lot more that goes on with pulling this Blade stuff off. You need a lot of secret sauce to do the Blade thing, man. Good luck. You’re my man, though.
