Back in the 1890s, writer Oscar Wilde brought the world a story called The Picture of Dorian Gray – and now the Netflix streaming service has announced that they’re teaming up with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television on a new TV series called The Grays, which ComicBook.com hears will be “a contemporary take on the Oscar Wilde classic about our fascination with eternal youth set against the backdrop of the modern beauty industry.

The Picture of Dorian Gray has the following description: Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.

Supergirl alum Katie Rose Rogers and All American‘s Robbie Rogers, who are siblings who previously worked together on Fellow Travelers, are writing The Grays. In a twist on the gothic novel, the series revolves around siblings Basil and Doran Gray.

Berlanti Productions’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman are producing the show, which has The Vicious Kind, Celeste & Jesse Forever, and The Age of Adaline director Lee Toland Krieger on board to direct the pilot episode. Krieger has also worked on several other Berlanti-produced shows. Rina Mimoun, whose previous credits include being a supervising producer on Everwood, developing and executive producing Privileged, and executive producing Mistresses, will serve as showrunner.

Berlanti Productions has been behind the likes of All American, All American: Homecoming, You, Superman & Lois, Dead Boy Detectives, Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Riverdale, Black Lightning, Titans, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Doom Patrol, Batwoman, Stargirl, The Flight Attendant, Kung Fu, and Gotham Knights, among others. They’re also working with Netflix on a live-action Scooby-Doo TV series.

Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Chbosky, Weekend Warriors

After claiming the top spot in Netflix’s English Film list with The Union, Mark Wahlberg is back in the news for a different project that brings him back to Apple. Wahlberg is teaming up with Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Wonder, Dear Evan Hansen) for Weekend Warriors, a comedic sports drama written and directed by Chbosky. Multiple studios tried to snag the rights to this one, but Apple Original Films took the pot. Mark Wahlberg stars in Weekend Warriors, with Plan B and The SpringHill Company producing.

Weekend Warriors takes inspiration from the 2023 feature Weekend Rebels, an original German-language sports comedy focusing on the true story of Mirco and Jason von Juterzcenka. The plot revolves around a father and his autistic son, who wants to find his favorite soccer club in the Premier League by forcing his dad to take him to see every team so he can decide. Sources with inside knowledge about the project say Weekend Warriors involves the NBA because of its ties to SpringHill.

The original film Wochenend Rebellen stars Florian David Fitz, Cecilio Andresen, and Aylin Tezel. Marc Rothemund directs from a script by Richard Kropf.

Weekend Warriors is Mark Wahlberg’s second collaboration with Apple after starring in the studio’s 2023 comedy The Family Plan. The family-friendly action film stars Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Ciarán Hinds, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Maggie Q, and twin actors Iliana Norris and Vienna Norris. The story focuses on a former top assassin living incognito as a suburban dad who must take his unsuspecting family on the run when his past catches up with him.

In addition to Weekend Warriors, Mark Wahlberg has The Six Billion Dollar Man to look forward to. Travis Knight directs the film based on the popular ’70s TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, with Wahlberg handling the lead role. Wahlberg is also attached to The Roman, an origin story of Julius Caesar that envisions the future dictator as a young general in the Roman army in a rarely discussed period of his life.

Have you seen Weekend Rebels? Who should star alongside Wahlberg as the son looking to find his favorite team? Let’s see your suggestions in the comments section below.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Michael Keaton

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it HERE), is set to reach theatres on September 6th – and when we go to check it out, it sounds like we shouldn’t expect to see a whole lot more of the title character than we saw in the original film. Apparently Beetlejuice only had 17 minutes of screen time in Beetlejuice, which had a running time of 92 minutes, and while speaking to GQ magazine, Michael Keaton – the actor who brings Beetlejuice to life – revealed that he didn’t want to pack too much Beetlejuice into the follow-up.

Keaton said, “The idea was, no, no, no, you can’t load it up with Beetlejuice, that’ll kill it. I think the Beetlejuice character doesn’t drive the story as much as he did in the first one. He’s more part of the storyline in this one as opposed to the first one, which is a case of, this thing comes in and drives the movie a little bit.” He has previously said that he feels the sequel has a stronger story than the first movie had.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was in development hell for decades before it finally got made. In 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel that was going to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite that script, Pamela Norris did rewrite it, and Warner Bros. offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite. He turned it down. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write and produce a new version of a sequel in 2011. Mike Vukadinovich was brought on to rewrite his script in 2017.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of Wednesday, have written the screenplay for Beetlejuice 2 that was actually filmed. Brad Pitt’s Plan B is producing the sequel, which filmed in London before moving to Vermont and Massachusetts.

Here’s the official synopsis: Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

As mentioned, Michael Keaton is back as Beetlejuice and is joined in the cast by Winona Ryder, reprising the role of Lydia Deetz (now the host of a TV series called Ghost House with Lydia Deetz); Catherine O’Hara, back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia; Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, Justin Theroux as Lydia’s fiancé Rory,  Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife, and Willem Dafoe as a law enforcement officer in the afterlife. Arthur Conti is also in there, in an unspecified role.

Are you looking forward to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and are you glad to hear that Beetlejuice doesn’t have too much screen time in it? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
