The White Lotus, Conan O'Brien, Season 3

Like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Mysteries franchise, casting for Mike White’s The White Lotus is always an event. Fans love to speculate who could join the cast of White’s award-winning series, and now Conan O’Brien wants to put his fiery red quaff in the ring. According to legend, O’Brien bumped into White in a restaurant, and the two started talking about The White Lotus Season 3. O’Brien offered to appear on the show, wanting to be a part of White’s hit project, though his proposed role could raise an eyebrow or two.

Speaking with Walton Goggins for episode 19 of Conan’s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, the former late-night host recapped his run-in with White, telling Goggins, “Before you guys started shooting The White Lotus, I ran into none other than Mike White in a restaurant. I said, ‘Hey, so the next season of The White Lotus, you’re going down to Thailand, right?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘I was there. I had a great time. I made a lot of friends.’”

Feeling he had an advantage, O’Brien pitched White on bringing him aboard. I said, “‘If there’s a part for me, I’m available.’” When asked for White’s reaction, O’Brien replied, “He looked at me, and he said, ‘You know, there’s a lot of sex work there,’” O’Brien recounted, to which he replied, “I could do that.”

Surprised by O’Brien’s enthusiasm for the desire to hock his wares in Thailand, Goggins and hosts Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley waited for Big Red to elaborate. “I could play a part where I’m a male gigolo or something.”

Flabbergasted but quick to recover, Goggins laughed and agreed that O’Brien could play a sex worker on TV and perhaps excel at being one in real life. Flattered, O’Brien said he appreciates Goggins’ confidence in him bringing big d*ck energy to a Thailand street corner.

Patrick Schwarzenegger (Gen V), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), Sarah Catherine Hook (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), and Sam Nivola (Maestro) join Goggins for The White Lotus Season 3. The rest of the cast includes Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Leslie Bibb (The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Parker Posey (Scream 3), Miloš Biković (The Challenge), Dom Hetrakul (Bangkok Dangerous), Christian Friedel (Babylon: Berlin), Morgana O’Reilly (Housebound), Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris (The Ark), Tayme Thapthimthong (Mechanic: Resurrection) with Natasha Rothwell (Insecure) returning to reprise her role of Belinda Lindsey from the first season.

“It’s going to be a supersized White Lotus,” series creator Mike White mentioned last year when asked about the new season. “It’s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don’t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that’s a good thing.“

it ends with us

A professional relationship may have ended between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, but fellow It Ends With Us star Brandon Sklenar is hoping to put out some flames amid both the strife that reportedly went on behind the scenes and how the movie’s promotion was handled, saying that those caught up in the drama and directing hate are taking away from the point of the movie.

Star/producer Blake Lively has taken the brunt of criticism as of late, with a lot of it falling on her for not actively publicizing the themes of the It Ends With Us, particularly as they pertain to domestic violence. With so much negativity taking the headlines, Sklenar – who plays restaurant owner and former flame to Lively’s Lily, Atlas Corrigan – took to Instagram to make a call for peace, writing, in part, “Trust me when I tell you, there isn’t a single person Involved in the making of this film that was not aware of the responsibility we had in making this. A responsibility to all the women who have experienced generational trauma – Domestic abuse – Or struggle with looking in the mirror and loving who they see.”

He concluded his message by writing, “All I ask is that before you spread hate on the internet, ask yourself who it’s helping. Ask yourself if your opinions are based in any fact. Or if you simply want to be a part of something, Let’s be a part of something better together. A part of a new story being written for women and all people everywhere. Lead with Love and please be kind. Brandon.”

Earlier this month, many took notice that It Ends With director/star Justin Baldoni wasn’t seen in any photos from the red carpet premiere of the Colleen Hoover adaptation. In addition to that, none of the core cast – notably Blake Lively – follow Baldoni on social media, despite him following them. It might seem petty, but it does suggest there was something going on behind the scenes of It Ends With Us, with most pointing to a power struggle that may have emerged due to Lively being a producer and bringing in husband Ryan Reynolds to punch up parts of the script.

As of publication, It Ends With Us has crossed the $100 million mark domestically, having opened at #2 behind Deadpool & Wolverine.

Rotten Tomatoes, Verified Hot

Rotten Tomatoes is about to make it easier for audiences to recognize the best movies in the business thanks to a new “Verified Hot” badge system. The badge signifies a quality above the average popcorn muncher, honoring the best-verified reviewed theatrical films by fans. The “Verified Hot” initiative compliments the site’s “Certified Fresh” Tomatometer badge, awarded to the highest-reviewed films by professional critics. In contrast, “Verified Hot” represents theatrical films that achieve a Verified Audience Score of 90% or higher on the Popcornmeter and meet other eligibility requirements.

Rotten Tomatoes plans to brand select summer films with the “Verified Hot” badge, including Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, Twisters, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fly Me to the MoonIt Ends with Us, and more.

“On Rotten Tomatoes, fans love to consult our verified audience score, in addition to the Tomatometer critics’ score, when discovering new movies and deciding what they want to watch next,” said Amanda Norvell, SVP of Direct-to-Consumer Services at Fandango. “With the addition of Rotten Tomatoes Verified Hot, we are excited to celebrate and shine a spotlight on the theatrical films that fans have unanimously embraced and have taken the time to share their incredible moviegoing experience with other fans.”

In addition to spotlighting the summer’s hottest films, Rotten Tomatoes is retroactively awarding films that remain with audiences long after the end credits roll, dating back to when the site launched its Verified Audience Ratings and Reviews in May 2019. Fan favorite films included in the list are Top Gun: Maverick, The Color Purple, Parasite, Oppenheimer, Belle, Nobody, The Holdovers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and more. You can find the complete list of films here.

Is Rotten Tomatoes’ “Verified Hot” audience badge a good idea, or does the label create another category of film that could overshadow others? Is it worth seeing if a movie doesn’t receive the “Verified Hot” badge? Are movies that don’t make the cut about to sell fewer tickets? Some people will say those movies were doomed to mediocrity anyway, but I wonder if this system could bite the box office in the ass. What do you think? Am I completely missing the mark? How much stock do you put in Rotten Tomatoes? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
