PLOT: Famed aesthetician Hope Goldman’s skincare business faces sabotage when rival Angel Vergara opens a boutique across the street. Aided by friend Jordan, Hope seeks to uncover who’s trying to ruin her reputation.
REVIEW: I’m not going to lie, a movie about the beauty/skincare industry doesn’t exactly appeal to me on the surface. But add Elizabeth Banks as the delusional lead at the center of the story and I’m intrigued. Then add in a very dark and twisted angle about the perception of one’s image and we’re off to the races! Plus, as much as it’s about beauty, it’s about so much more. The feeling of paranoia is universal, and everyone has that moment in their life where it seems like everything is working against them. Skincare posits the idea that maybe there’s someone behind that, purposely tearing your life apart. And it’s quite the journey.
Skincare follows Hope Goldman, an aesthetician whose business is targeted by a mysterious person trying to ruin her life. They mess with her business, trying to tear it down, while a new aesthetician moves into the space across the street. Is this the person trying to take her life down? Or is it merely a coincidence? Banks has been relegated to far many side roles over the years so it’s great to see her front and center, and deservedly so. She absolutely owns the role of Hope Goldman, providing so much nuance to a very complex character. On the page, Hope is rather one-dimensional so Banks is really able to elevate the part. She could have easily come across as dull and superficial yet Banks brings an affability to her, despite these poor qualities.
I also really liked Luis Gerardo Méndez as Hope’s rival, Angel. Is it just Hope’s paranoia or is he really a bad guy? Luis perfectly balances the two sides and helps maintain the mystery for as long as possible. And he’s not given much time to make an impact but does a great job with just pointed looks at the camera. Lewis Pullman was easily the biggest standout, with such manic energy that he brings fun to every scene he’s in. The apple certainly hasn’t fallen from the tree (Lewis is the son of famous actor Bill Pullman). This also sees Slither co-stars Banks and Nathan Fillion on the screen together. And Fillion plays such a slimeball that who adds even more depressing layers to Goldman.
I was shocked to see that this was actually the directorial debut for Austin Peters. But clearly, his years working on music videos really lent to a great vision. Skincare is stylish with a very distinct visual language. He clearly has a vision and maintains a great throughline It’s easy to appreciate the synth score and the edits to the beats of the music are very satisfying. This is definitely a love letter to Los Angeles, with great usage of the city on screen. Given the film’s focus on outward image, self-absorbed LA is the perfect setting. Story beats can feel a little formulaic at times but the execution is always top-tier.
Skincare is a journey for Hope Goldman that goes to darker places than one may expect. The tone edges on the uncomfortable, with it being difficult to watch someone’s life crumble around them. I’d argue it’s much more of a dark comedy than I expected, but even then, those comedic moments are played in a grounded way. Paranoia seeps into every piece of celluloid and by the time the reveal happens, the line between comedy and tragedy is made clear. I loved how everything came together and, while it’s a little telegraphed, the journey getting there is great. Banks delivers in all facets and needs to be in more interesting roles like this.

The story of Kevin Costner’s epic Western, Horizon: An American Saga, is one that news outlets and the movie community have analyzed as one of the biggest gambles that a modern-day movie star has gone into with a passion project. For months, it has been reported on the sacrifices that Costner has made in his career and his personal life to put his vision out into the world. This included stories of his marriage and his popular TV series, Yellowstone, being put in jeopardy as he paid all of his attention and effort into the massive undertaking of directing and starring in a multi-part epic in a genre that is no longer known for having its finger on the pulse of audiences.
The gamble does not seem to be paying off for Costner as his first chapter had opened with a dismal response and Warner Bros. would both dump the film on video-on-demand mere weeks after its theater premiere and the release of Chapter Two has been pulled with no foreseeable reschedule. It has been a month since the first film hit digital and Deadline now has the date that historical epic is planned to drop on the streaming service Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One is set to exclusively stream on Max starting on Friday, August 23.
Although Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two has been pulled from the release schedule, the next chapter in Costner’s story will be making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September, along with a screening of the first chapter. Despite the unfortunate turn of events for his passion project, Costner is appreciative that it will still somehow reach an audience. Costner stated, “My dream was always to show Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two at the Venice Film Festival. The fact that now they have decided to show Chapter One earlier in the day and then the World Premiere of Chapter Two that evening shows not only their belief in how the two films work together but their support of a director’s vision.”
The Horizon director and star continued to say, “I’m indebted to [Venice Film Fest director] Alberto Barbera for his courage and leadership in committing to this cinematic journey. It is with gratitude and excitement that I return to the Venice Film Festival. Long live the movies and those willing to stand for them.”

The next film in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, which is populated by the likes of Godzilla, Kong, and other Titans, won’t be reaching theatre screens until March 26, 2027 – but while we wait for that film, another season of the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is in the works, and it has just been announced that Legendary is set to send three Godzilla and Kong video games out into the world!
OnlineMediaCafe reports that one of the games is Kong: Survivor Instinct. In collaboration with Legendary Entertainment, 7Levels unveils an upcoming 2.5D action-adventure game for PC and consoles. Set shortly after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, players navigate a shattered city through the eyes of a father searching for his missing daughter. This game promises a compelling narrative and thrilling gameplay. Available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later this year.
Paweł Biela, Co-Founder of 7Levels, provided the following statement: “The opportunity to work on the hugely popular Monsterverse IP has been an exciting and formative experience for all of us at 7Levels. Not only did we have a chance to show some of the fan-favorite Titans from a unique perspective, but we also found committed and supportive partners in the exceptional people at Legendary. Their deep understanding of the Monsterverse lore and what makes it so captivating to so many people around the world allowed us to recapture that essence and recreate it in our game.“
Another game is Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers. Embark on a thrilling adventure with Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers, a 4X strategy mobile game published by Tilting Point LLC and developed by Hunted Cow Games. Set in the newly emerged Siren Isles, players will build bases, form alliances, and engage in tactical, turn-based combat with their Titan Chaser squads, as well as with creatures they’ve collected from across the Monsterverse like Skullcrawlers, Mother Longlegs and many other fascinating monsters, and ultimately find ways to engage with and support Godzilla & Kong themselves. Available now for pre-order on iOS and Android.
Tomas Gonzalez, Sr. Game Manager at Tilting Point, had this to say about the game: “Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers invites fans to take control of the iconic Monsterverse, guiding their veteran Chasers on a path of intrigue while also harnessing the power of captured Titans for massive destruction. The Siren Isles are just a small sliver of the world created by the films, but the story that will be uncovered, and the conflict unleashed by players and their competing alliances, promises to be no less momentous. Between the creative license we’ve been granted by Legendary, and our longstanding, prosperous collaboration with Hunted Cow Games, it’s been a thrill watching this ambitious title come to life.“
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting fill in the information on the third game, which is a collaboration with Roblox called the Monsterverse Supersocial Roblox Experience. This one will allow players to become Monarch operatives interacting with fan-favorite Titans. Developed in partnership with Supersocial, this experience “offers a unique virtual world where players can engage with the Monsterverse in innovative ways.” Monsterverse Supersocial will be heading to Roblox later this year.
